More Web Geeky Goodness

Okay, just be warned. There’s no politics or news in this post. But there was so much interest in last night’s post about what computers our readers use, I thought I’d share some more information about browsers.

Be warned, only the geeks among you come any further.

Okay, browsers.

Let’s start with September 2009 to date (in each case, I’ve only listed browsers above a 1% threshold) …

Firefox 41.60%
Explorer 30.81%
Safari 21.24%
Chrome 4.19%

September 2008

Firefox 41.74%
Explorer 38.36%
Safari 16.26%
Chrome 2.07%

September 2007

Explorer 43.72%
Firefox 39.30%
Safari 13.93%

The overall story is pretty straightforward: growth of everything else at the expense of Internet Explorer, with Firefox pretty much leveled off at just over 40%. What’s also notable is that these trends map to a substantial degree to our user base’s strong move toward the Mac operating system over the same period of time.

We can also look, however, at browsers broken out by operating system.

Win/IE 30.81%
Win/Firefox 29.70%
Mac/Safari 18.41%
Mac/Firefox 10.53%
