Gerstein: So What If I'm Getting Paid By Lieberman?
February 28, 2007 -- 11:56 AM EST // View Comments (482) // Post a Comment

* Updated below: CJR Daily weighs in.

Dan Gerstein has responded to my post below. He says there's no problem at all with the fact that The Politico published a piece by him attacking some of Joe Lieberman's high-profile foes at the same time that he was collecting money from Lieberman:

[W]hether I am a paid, unpaid, or former advisor to Lieberman was not relevant to my column. I was not writing in any Lieberman capacity or on his behalf -- I was expressing my own opinions. And the content of the column was not about Lieberman -- it barely mentioned him -- but about the blindness and irresponsibility of many liberal bloggers. (I will leave it to readers to decide whether Sargent's process point undercut my arguments or unwittingly reinforced them.)

The question that I keep coming back too is what would have been gained by highlighting my current status as a paid adviser in this particular context. The reason for disclosing that kind of information is to avoid hiding conflicts of interest or presenting interested opinions as independent ones. As I noted above, that was not at issue here -- both the column itself and the tagline at the bottom made clear my Lieberman affiliation. So what would have been the point?

What would have been the point? Why, how's this for a point: Because disclosing that he is getting paid by Lieberman would have constituted telling the full truth. The description of Gerstein as a former communications director alone was a misleading one at best. It's unwittingly revealing indeed that the basic goal of being as truthful as possible simply doesn't appear to enter into the equation for Gerstein here.

Look, here's the issue in a nutshell. If you're going to publish a long piece attacking the credibility of some of Lieberman's higher-profile critics by name...

Liberal Bloggers Demonstrate Their Political Immaturity, Democrat Suggests

...then readers of that piece deserve to know that the piece's author is collecting fees from him. Is there any chance that Politico bigs John Harris and Jim VandeHei disagree with that? Doubtful.

Gerstein claims it's not "relevant" that he is an adviser to Lieberman. But come on, now -- Gerstein's piece wasn't merely intended as a scholarly discussion of the blogosphere. Whether The Politico's editors knew it or not -- and it's my bet that they didn't fully grasp this -- Gerstein's piece was also obviously about settling old scores, about payback for the fact that Lieberman repeatedly came under fire from the liberal blogosphere during the campaign. More to the point, Gerstein's piece also attacked the credibility of some of Lieberman's current critics -- something that helps advanced Lieberman's current interests.

While it's true that the initial description of Gerstein established a link between Lieberman and Gerstein, that simply wasn't enough by any standard. Would we all think it absolutely fine if a newspaper published, say, a piece that contained elements attacking some Hillary Clinton critics written by a current paid Hillary adviser -- internet guru Peter Daou, say -- while identifying him as a former adviser? Nope -- of course we wouldn't.

What happened here is this: Gerstein used The Politico as a platform partly to settle the old scores of -- and to advance the current agenda of -- a paying client, but without mentioning the "paying" part. Is that really what Harris and VandeHei envision for something they're hoping to establish as the preeminently credible Web-based political publication?

Update: Atrios boils down the whole issue very neatly here.

Update II: The above has been slightly edited to correct an inaccuracy by taking "former communications director" out of quotes.

Update III: Paul McLeary at CJR Daily:

We're not saying that Gerstein is hiding his affiliation with Lieberman -- he is quoted as working for him in the other Politico story, but from a journalistic standpoint, his continuing relationship with Lieberman, and all the history with liberal bloggers that that relationship entails, does in fact taint his piece.

While Gerstein claims innocence, it's important to remember that he's a political operative, and thus he works under a very different set of rules than a journalist. His goal is to push the interests of his clients, period. It's the editors of the Politico who should have known better.

Er, yes. For the record, I have no idea whether The Politico's editors knew this before the piece went up. I tend to doubt it -- I've gotta think that if they had known it, they would have put it in their description of him. But the bottom line is that it wasn't there, and it should have been.

Update IV: Crooks and Liars' John Amato turns up the volume.

If, as Gerstein claims, it's not relevant that he's a currently paid advisor who receives a cheque to compensate him for time spent furthering Joe Lieberman's message, why didn't he just say that? The fact that he gave a false attribution is evidence enough that the truth makes a difference in this case.

Didn't a couple of liberal bloggers get taken to task for not mentioning being paid a while back? I'm an old woman and don't remember some details that well. It appears to be more double standards for the people who are the so-called mainstream. Any Mr. Sargent and Mr. Marshall are correct in pointing it out.

The second-best result of Lieberman losing to Lamont would have been the blow to Gerstein. He's among the slimiest and most disgusting of political operatives. The man he works for claims to devoutly adhere to his religious beliefs, yet Gerstein and Lieberman put out clearly false flyers claiming that Lamont was a racist. If that's not bearing false witness, I don't know what is.

There are few things that are sleazier than falsely claiming that another person is racist. Gerstein's sophistry is a joke, and he's a vile human being.

Ummm..... Its not up to Gerstein to decide whether there was a conflict of interest. There is a reason that journalists tend to err on the side of caution by (ideally) disclosing what could be perceived as conflicts of interest. Gerstein's statement that he was presenting his own opinion and not advancing Lieberman's interests is entirely self-serving. The right thing to do would have been to disclose his continuing association with Lieberman. But then again he's always been a dishonest prick--so what do you expect.

I think an additional point is that anyone currently drawing a paycheck from Joe Lieberman is no longer really a Democrat, just as Lieberman himself is no longer really a Democrat. The Democrats of Connecticut voted in the Democratic primary, and they decided they didn't want him to be their candidate for the Senate. That he went on to win anyway doesn't change this basic point.

They may be Democrat-aligned independents like Joe, who chose to caucus with the Democrats in order to keep his seniority and avoid political oblivion. (His nonsensical, leaving-the-door-open, thinly veiled threats to leave the caucus have absolutely no credibility whatsoever.)

However, given Joe's constant undermining of the Democratic party on the seminal issue of our day, the Iraq War, if you work for Joe, you are not really a Dem.

Sorry, all you big-tenters, but you simply have to draw the line somewhere.

Full disclosure is just a no-brainer. Gerstein is so clearly in the wrong, it amazes me that he would try to defend such an obvious error. It reveals his arrogance.

Greg, I hope you'll keep trying to get a comment from Vanderhei or Harris themselves. Gerstein's reaction it pretty much expected...and as he has no credibility to begin with, what does he have to lose by making such a patently inadequate argument? But the Politico's founders, theoretically at least, still have some journalistic integrity to defend.

Gerstein's status as a Lieberman employee is more than relevant in this case; wasn't it Kos who mocked Gerstein during the primaries and called him "the stupidest man alive"? Based on that fact alone, it's clear that Dan had an axe to grind when he wrote that piece, and the claim that his employment status is irrelevant is laughable at best. His immaturity and extremely thin skin are all to prevalent.

This is an all-too-familiar subject that Atrios raises time and time again - political consultants who are actively on someone's payroll masquerade as impartial or, worse, "centrist" commentators and yet have ulterior motives not apparent to the average reader. Carville (working with Clinton) and Krauthammer (who co-wrote Bush's SOTU speech last year and called it "masterful" on Fox) are good examples, though there are dozens of examples all over the place. Someone with the time and ability should compile a list of regular commentators for both print and cable media and link them to their political masters. Actually, scratch that. The list would probably make for incredibly depressing reading.

There was a story about that, but like most right-wing smears, it turned out not to be true. C'mon, Greg, have you no sense of irony? You criticize the description of Gerstein as incomplete (and therefore dishonest) but your description and quotation of his "explanation" is equally incomplete.

You address only his secondary point, that he was writing in his personal capacity not on behalf of Lieberman, without addressing his first point, as follows:

"First off, The Politico left little doubt that I am a Lieberman partisan -- the tagline at the bottom noted that I "served as communications director for Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman's successful general election campaign."

In your quotation, you omit the beginning of the paragraph which makes this clear by stating "Second . . ."

Yes, Lieberman apparently currently pays Gerstein. That means he is a Lieberman partisan. But the description of him clearly revealed him as a veteran of the blog wars on Lieberman so any sane observer would realize he has a not impartial opinion on the subject. Absent the information about currently being paid by Lieberman, who would honestly consider Gerstein a neutral observer once they learned that he worked for Lieberman so recently? Gerstein is right that this should have been disclosed (you also omitted where he said he was for full disclosure) but that the disclosure would not have made a material difference.

I admit that Gerstein's statement that he was writing on his own behalf rather than on Lieberman's sounds weak, but it appears that they have identical interests on this topic. Both have been villified, rightly or wrongly, and viciously characterized on the blogosphere. Lieberman undoubtedly agrees with everything Gerstein wrote, but I don't doubt that Gerstein meant every word as well.

Posted by: Marc
Date: February 28, 2007 1:08 PM

Great follow up Greg. I might be missing something, but did Gerstein answer the question? Was he working for Lieberman when he wrote the column? Is he now?

And why not every time we have an "expert" on TV from one of the think tanks they say, "This expert receives funding from ExxonMobile."

Remember when the dot.com crashed and they had to start identifying the financial analysts? Because they were pimping stocks that their bankers were selling, even when they were dogs?
Maybe the same rule need to be applied to guests op/ed pieces, radio interviews and bios that go with articles in web papers.

Posted by:
Date: February 28, 2007 1:09 PM

Marc, I thought about that. And I think it's okay. Here's why. The portion I did quote had this in it:

"As I noted above, that was not at issue here -- both the column itself and the tagline at the bottom made clear my Lieberman affiliation."

and I explicitly addressed this, too, by writing:

"While it's true that the initial description of Gerstein established a link between Lieberman and Gerstein, that simply wasn't enough by any standard. Would we all think it absolutely fine if a newspaper published, say, a piece that contained elements attacking some Hillary Clinton critics written by a current paid Hillary adviser -- internet guru Peter Daou, say -- while identifying him as a former adviser? Nope -- of course we wouldn't."

Note the first sentence of that. As you can see, that argument was repeated twice -- once in Gerstein's words, and once in my conceding that it was true. I think my paragraph above very clearly counts as addressing that first point. Don't you?

OBVIOUSLY there's a difference between being a former communications director for someone and currently collecting a paycheck from them!

Seriously, what normal human being doesn't view an opinion statement differently if someone discloses:

"I used to work for St. Luke's Hospital" vs. "I'm currently being paid by St. Luke's Hospital"

"I'm an ex-NYC cop" vs. "I currently work for the NYPD as a consultant"

"I'm a former mob lawyer" vs. "I'm currently being paid by the mob for my services."

This is ridiculous. If it was relevant that you used to work for Joe Lieberman, it is obviously relevant that you are currently working for him as well.

The only question is whether or not the Politico will show any journalistic integrity and print some kind of correction on their site, and demand that people disclose their conflicts of interest appropriately in the future.

Marc,

For someone who thinks this is all just a tempest in a teapot, you sure do spend a WHOLE LOT of time commenting about it.

To your point, 'journalism', whatever is left of it, requires full disclosure. It's that simple. The misleading (and, yes, dishonest) tag given to Gerstein doesn't hide his stake in the matter -- but it DOES give him a sense that he ISN'T speaking for Lieberman (even if, as you say, they hold identical viewpoints). The thing is, if he's still drawing a paycheck from the guy, he's still shilling.

It's a fine point perhaps, but an instructive one, given all the heat Edwards got for past statements of his hires.

A former Lieberman employee may have the exact same axe to grind as a current one, but the difference is, of course, one's beholden to a sitting Senator, the other is an 'independent' observer. This really is Journalism 101, Gerstein's obvious and sincere sour grapes notwithstanding.

Well, i called the politico's "editorial inquiry" line (Ta'Mara Blake at (202) 289-1155), and was transferred to Dave Marx (marks?) the managing editor. I left him the following message:

"Hi, my name is brendan skwire, and i'm a big fan of the Politico. I'd like to submit an editorial. I work for the Mazda car Company, and my boss wants me to do a piece about Mazda's superiority over all other brands. however, he doesn't want anyone to know it's associated with Mazda, so we figured the Politico would be a great place to publish it, since you don't point out conflicts of interest, like the way Joe Liebrman paid his employee Dan Gerstein to do that hit piece on bloggers.

For that matter, I'm planning on working on one of the Mayoral campaigns in Philadelphia, and I would LOVE the opportunity to write a hit piece on my candidate's opponents, especially if I didn't have to disclose my relationship to the candidate. If you could set me up with the same deal as dan Gerstein, that would be really helpful. Here's my number: XXX-XXX-XXXX. I'll call back later.

Right. Like he'd be nursing these old grudges and trying to settle old scores if he weren't working for Lieberman.

Greg,

You are correct. I overstated the selective nature of your quotation. You did repeat Gerstein's restatement of his argument that the difference between the actual disclosure and the full disclosure was a minor one. My apologies.

As for whether you addressed the argument, well it depends on what one means by "address" I suppose. You responded to it by saying that an analogous situation would be obviously wrong, but you don't really say why. And I honestly don't see it.

I'm not saying that a full disclosure would not have been proper. It clearly would have been. But the difference between what was disclosed and what should have been still seems so minor to me since both clearly identify Gerstein as a Lieberman partisan. If the purpose of the piece was to settle "old scores" and "payback", as you claim, then it seems that disclosing Gerstein's past position is almost more relevant than disclosing his current position.

Jay B,

I won't deny that it appears to be a waste of my time to take anything other than an anti-Lieberman position on these boards.

Maybe someone else has pointed this out but from the point of view of both the reading public and the politico's so called editors the primary problem with Gerstein is that he is

"double dipping"
He is getting paid twice, once to flack for lieberman by lieberman and once by someone else to pretend not to be flacking for lieberman in writing a hit piece from the generic "democratic" point of view. to make this crystal clear even to gerstein if the byline of the piece was "paid lieberman supporter defends boss, attacks democratic activists" the piece would simply never have run. It would have been filed instantly under the "dog bites man" or "du'h" file. Its actually an insult to all democrats that lieberman's hack is defined in the heading as a "democrat"--surely his paid assistants should be described, as is their boss, as "newly independent democratic party affiliate..."

I don't see what's the big deal here.

Posted by: Douglas Watts
Date: February 28, 2007 2:23 PM

Marc, I think I did explain why that's wrong. My position is this: If The Politico is going to publish a piece by someone who's taking money from someone, and the piece is an attack on that person's enemies, then the reader deserves to know this.

Just because revealing some sort of past link to Lieberman tells part of the story doesn't mean that the reader doesn't deserve to know the full story. In this case, because the Gerstein piece was such a direct hit on the credibility of Lieberman's critics, the reader did deserve to know the full story.

If The Politico is willing to publish a piece that partly advances the agenda of one of the author's paying clients, the least they can do is share that with readers.

That's my position. I'm not sure if I can state it more clearly than that.

Let me also say, by the way, that contrary to Gerstein's assertion that my post was "conspiratorial," I'm not directly alleging that the Politico's editors knew this information and knowingly concealed it. I think it's more likely that they never learned it. But that's just speculation, so it's largely meaningless.

Posted by: Greg
Date: February 28, 2007 2:26 PM

I don't like Gerstein, but he's not the person who committed the ethical violation. He wrote a piece defending his boss, that's his right.

The ethical violation was Politico's, for not warning their readership that the article was from a paid shill, and that even identifying Gerstein as a Democrat is problematic given that he worked for an independent and helped him campaign against a Democrat.

I'm not saying you're wasting your time -- it's your time -- I'm saying that for every piece Greg has written on the subject of Lieberman, you've written that it's much ado about nothing.

Lieberman's coy dance about party-switching (his actions, if not his rhetoric, makes it more of an open question than you're willing to concede), Gerstein's hitpiece and THEN his idiotic retort to Greg -- all small potatoes in your book. Called us 'sour grapes' for picking on poor Joe.

I'm just saying that it seems like you DO care about such things, no matter how you try and dismiss them. You just care more about them from the Senator's point of view. That's not a crime, or even unwelcome, but your interest in the matter should prove they aren't as irrelevent as you've claimed over and over again.

That said, I (and Gerstein it appears) still don't see how anybody's opinion about Gerstein's writing would have been affected if it was disclosed that he was currently paid by Lieberman as well. This was clearly not a neutral piece and it was clearly disclosed that it was written by someone without a neutral viewpoint.

In sum, we all agree that it was wrong not to give full disclosure, but we apparently disagree on whether it did (or really could do) any harm here.

Did I criticize any posting about the failure to hold Katrina hearings or about the troop escalation as a tempest in a teapot? No, I did not.

I have only criticized postings about such huge controversies as the "very remote possibility" that Lieberman may caucus with the Republicans and whether someone thought that Dan Gerstein was a neutral commentator because only his work on Lieberman's campaign was disclosed.

I'll admit that I don't know why I bother to comment on these issues. As I have previously posted, it hurts the credibility of criticism of Lieberman when miniscule issues such as this are trumpeted as if they were a big deal. As Gerstein even states, TPM is widely read and widely respected. Whether or not these miniscule issues merit a great deal of attention, Josh allows these postings on his front page. That makes them important, not the substance of the issues themselves.

I guess I don't see how so much typing can be spent on a matter of such secondary importance in Gerstein's original piece.

I mean, there's a big difference between whether Gerstein is, at this very moment, being paid by Liberman, as opposed to a few months back -- especially when, so far as I know, it's not as if Lieberman is, say, intending to run anywhere in the near future against anybody?

What I really wish is that Gary and others would deal with the substance of Gerstein's argument, which strikes me as mostly right on the money: that the left blogosphere behaved disgracefully and both self- and other- destructively in its handling of the two Edwards bloggers.

I personally didn't realize until that episode what kind of shameless demagogues our online blogosphere leaders would permit themselves to be, when their mass of readers demanded action, however irrational.

If you don't see the merit, on the main, of Gerstein's argument, I wonder if you have sufficient political judgment to steer the blogosphere away from damaging its own clout in the electoral process.

And I say this as a Democrat who detests what Lieberman stands for, as well as one who finds nothing inspiring in ANY of our current Democratic candidates.

Some observations:
Telling the "full truth" has never been journalistic standard. Journalism is impossible under a "full truth" mandate.

The piece GS questions is not journalism. It's DG's op-ed, on Politico's soapbox. The reader is free to evaluate the supporting argument, evidentiary particulars, and conclusion. Unless an op-ed writer presents in the "expert witness" voice, bias is not a major issue.

DG has been a target of vitriolic attack by bloggers. ["Full truth" would require interminable recitation of such.] If the problematic motive is score-settling, DG has his own portfolio. He doesn't need JL's.

The piece is not about JL, whose problematic "current interests" are neither specified nor evident (any more than, e.g., Kirsten Gillibrand's).

Compare the other Politico piece, which IS a journalistic artifact -- reportage and analysis.

Here, JL is the subject. DG is a source, quoted re his current, (nonpublic) knowledge of Lieberman's circumstances, and therefore rightly identified -- and qualified -- as "a former Lieberman aide who continues to serve as a paid adviser".

GS engages in extracurricular speculation to the effect that
1. Politico's editors "didn't fully grasp [that] Gerstein's piece was also obviously about settling old scores"
2. The editors agree with GS's view of the journalistic proprieties.
I will speculate that both speculations are in error.

I will further speculate that score-settling is at play here, by someone who made deep emotional investments in the Lamont campaign. Must these also be disclosed?

RonK,

several points.

1) I couldn't help but notice that the one thing you didn't comment on was the central question: Whether or not it should have been disclosed that Gerstein is taking payments from Lieberman. What is your opinion on this point?

2) When I speculated, I made it very clear that I was doing just that: I said, "my bet is..." which is a dead giveaway of speculation.

3) This has nothing to do with any alleged "commitment to the Lamont campaign," unless by "commitment to the Lamont campaign" you mean an aversion to mendacious attacks on the liberal blogosphere, of which you are a part, and a desire to see Lieberman stick by his campaign promises.

4) You mention that DG's piece was an Op ed. So what? When's the last time the Times or WaPo published an Op ed attacking people written by someone who's taking money from the rival of those people? There is simply no justification for this -- which explains why it's the one point you evaded.

5) You're right about "full truth." that was a clumsy and unfortunate choice of words. However, this doesn't change the fact that Gerstein/The Politico should have disclosed more, not less, about his relationship with Lieberman.

Come on, Ron. This is indefensible, and you know it.

To answer number 4, the New York Times published an op-ed on February 8 of this year from Javad Zarif (the Iranian ambassador to the United Nations) attacking the Bush administration's policy on Iran.

I guess it happens.

Marc, quick question: Did the Times publish Zarif's Op ed without identifying him as the current Iranian ambassador to the UN?

As you well know, what I meant to say was, "When's the last time the Times or WaPo published an Op ed attacking people written by someone who's taking money from the rival of those people -- without disclosing that fact?"

I'm still not sure why anyone's defending this. The guy's taking money from Lieberman. That should have been disclosed. End of story.

Greg,

Look, what you are hearing from a bunch of people on this board is that the big "disclosure" you're going on and on about is the smallest of potatoes in the ordinary world we mere mortals inhabit.

Now I'm not going to pretend to know all the little curlicules inside the rules that journalists and columnists and political operatives are supposed to adhere to.

But to many of us, the distinction between what Gerstein revealed, namely that he worked for Lieberman in the last campaign -- which ended only 4 months ago, for Christ's sake -- and the stupendously important truth that he STILL works for Lieberman is way too much ado about stinking nothing. I mean, does anyone with half a brain imagine that he wouldn't be settling scores in any case from the last election? Are you that naive?

It would be nice, too, if you could find a way - ANY damn way -- to deal with the substance of what he wrote, rather than throw up such stupid smoke.

There's a lot of substance that one could nail Gerstein on too. I posted a comment with a rather strong attack on him for libeling Ned Lamont as a racist -- recall that Gerstein helped Lieberman distribute flyers around churches in Black neighborhoods making false allegations against Lamont. In my opinion, someone who did that should be forever banned from the world of 'serious' political opinion makers. Falsely charging someone of engaging in racism is vile. Gerstein did this, and it's well-known that he did this.

Gerstein responded to me by saying that exposing his libelous/slanderous attacks on Lamont 'proves' the point of his Politico article.

That's a typical Gerstein reaction: he does something grossly wrong, and anyone who points it out is immature.

I'd say that those of us who see him as being vile and expose him as such are just being decent human beings. What decent human being could stand by and do nothing in the face of such an awful attack?

If anything, the fact that Gerstein is not only taken seriously but continues to be employed shows how rotten the democratic process has become in this country. He should be laughed off the stage.

It seems that everywhere I look these days, I find another example of 'the Politico' pushing incorrect information and right-leaning propaganda. No, strike that...Beltway-Gasbag-friendly propaganda is more like it.

Even worse, these guys are now making Mainstream television appearances as though they somehow represent the 'blogging perspective'. I saw someone from the Politico, John Harris I believe, channeling David Broder at his worst on the Sunday talk shows a couple of Sundays ago. I wish I had more specifics, but 'the Politico' was just appearing on my radar. Does nyone else recall this or have a transcript (or clip?)?

On the Libby case, the Politico representative (Harris?) led with the increasingly popular 'Fitzgerald is an angry prosecutor trying to inflate his career by going after a loyal public servant on a technicality' meme as though he invented it.

'the Politico'...it's already just another DC insider megaphone.

Update and correction to previous post:

It was Roger Simon (sincere apologies to John Harris), and Think Progress picked up the details:

thinkprogress.org/2007/02/11/simon-libby/

(Think Progress isn't up at the moment, but a Google of 'Politico Libby' will help find a cached version of the page).

Greg -- Responding to your points above by number --
1. It is my view that Gerstein's current paid relationship was rightly disclosed in the Politico article, and irrelevant to the Politico op-ed.

2. I marked your speculation as such, and appended my own -- that your speculation will prove to be incorrect. I expect Politico ed's will comment, especially in light of CJR's notice.

3. You misquote me, don't you? I referred to your "emotional investment", not "commitment to the Lamont campaign". You misrepresent me. I refer not to your aversion to "mendacious attacks", but to your aversion to Lieberman, and your woeful loss of journalistic perspective on this feature race, and your post-elect inability to accept the result. And you misrepresent yourself, characterizing your bias (and score-settling motive) as "alleged". I speculate that you'll eventually examine your coverage of the race with journalist embarrassment ... but you'll have to get over the loss first.

4. I certainly didn't mean to "evade" the salient point, so, to the question: How often does NYT or WaPo publish an op-ed that criticizes someone (or something) who has criticized (or otherwise entered into conflict with) with someone (or something) with whom the writer has a compensated relationship (or other current personal interest), and that relationship (or interest) is not disclosed at point of publication? I'd guess this occurs on the order of once a day.

[You'll grant, won't you, that NYT's book reviews are notorious in this regard, especially where public affairs subject matter is involved?]

I think you've evaded points I raised. Isn't Gerstein's personal motive evident and adequate in its own right (and abundantly illustrated in comments)? How is Lieberman implicated, and what "current interests" are at stake?

Isn't your characterization of bloggers as Lieberman's "rivals" hyperbolic? The blog-mice may drag out their appeals in the Court of Sour Grapes indefinitely, but Lamont was Lieberman's rival, that contest is concluded, and Lieberman has six years in the Senate whether Shakespeare's Sister moves on or not.

Your case against The Politico is at best on par with the case against Lieberman's campaign for adopting stock footage of a CA sunset as its thematic CT sunrise, which is to say ... absent overriding bias of their own, nobody cares.

Greg-

Why no comment on Obama's advisor Samantha Power's op-ed in the LA Times which does not disclose her affiliation at all (instead of merely inadequately like Gerstein's affiliation) even though she discusses Obama's Iraq plan?

Oh, right. It doesn't involve a trivial issue concerning Lieberman.
