DAN GERSTEIN: MAJORITY OF CONNECTICUT VOTERS ARE "ANGRY."
This is a funny one. In the current issue of Blueprint magazine, Dan Gerstein, a top strategist for Joe Lieberman's victory over Ned Lamont last year, has offered up a piece that rewrites the history of that race in a way that's almost comically incoherent. Particularly noteworthy is the following priceless passage:
That, in the end, is how Lieberman was able to become Lazarus, despite the fact that a clear majority of the Connecticut electorate opposed the war. We ran a campaign for all voters and about all voters. They waged a vendetta on behalf of the angriest few.
There you have it in a nutshell: A "clear majority" opposed the war, but the candidate who represented that view somehow simultaneously was waging a campaign "on behalf of the angriest few." It just doesn't get any better than that.
What makes that passage a thing of beauty, however, is not just its witlessly self-contradictory nature, but also the fact that it unwittingly embodies, and hence reveals, the truth about how the Lieberman forces really were able to win the race, despite the fact that exit polls showed that many more Connecticut voters broadly agreed with Lamont than with Lieberman about Iraq. They did it largely by misrepresenting Ned Lamont's views as extreme -- as those of the "angriest few" -- when in fact Lamont's views were generally mainstream. Meanwhile, they duped people into believing that Lieberman's views were mainstream, when in fact his foreign policy views were and are the extreme ones.
Lieberman accomplished this remarkable goal the old-fashioned way: By unabashedly misleading the voters.
During the primary, as Atrios has noted, Lieberman said this:
I am confident that the situation is improving enough on the ground that by the end of this year we will begin to draw down significant numbers of American troops and by the end of next year more than half of the troops who are there now will be home.
...and during the general election he released a 10-point plan for Iraq that said this:
After losing the Democratic primary to Lamont and forming his own party running as an independent Democrat, Lieberman outlined a 10-point plan for Iraq in which he called for increasing the number of U.S. troops embedded in Iraqi units two- or three-fold. But he said this should be done by redeploying existing troops "not adding new troops to the region."
...only to go on after his victory to call for just that -- "adding new troops to the region" -- even disparaging those against escalation by saying this:
LIEBERMAN: I fear that while this resolution is non-binding and, therefore, will not affect the implementation of the plan, it will do two things that can be harmful, which is that it will discourage our troops, who we’re asking to carry out this new plan, and it will encourage the enemy, because as General Petraeus said to our committee, war is a test of wills, and you don’t want your enemy to be given any hope.
Come to think of it, that angry majority of Connecticut voters has good reason to be pissed off, given that their Senator misled them so blatantly.

Soon after the idiots took impeachment off the table they welcomed the traitor Lieberman back into the Party and gave him a leadership position. The Democratic leadership is just as much an enemy of the people as the piece of shit Lieberman is.

Stupid Dems from CT have only themselves to blame. We told them again and again and again, and yet they CHOSE to screw us by voting for that fucker. I don't blame the CT Republicans since they got what they wanted, but DAMN those 30-odd% of D's. So now they are going to pay since they are stuck with him for 6 years, and they are going to make us pay.
Ironic. My verification code below is "pain". Figures....

The "angry majority of Connecticut voters has good reason to be pissed off, given that their Senator misled them so blatantly". RECALL THE LIAR. They did it to Gray Davis in California. They can do it to Lieberman in Connecticut.
Voters in Connecticut thought they were getting a democrat. Voters in Connecticut got a republican.

CT voters may hate the war, but they sure love the defense spending in their local economy. They made their choice.
Posted by: DawnDate: February 3, 2007 11:01 AM
Milo:
Connecticut doesn't have a recall statute - the only reason Gray Davis could be recalled is because California *does*.
(And I'm not certain if a state recall statute can legally affect someone elected to *federal* office - e.g. the Senate. The US Constitution, of course, has *no* provision for recall elections.)

When all else fails--blame the voters? Has it not yet pentrated your skulls that the CT race was a debacle for the *blogosphere*? Excuse me, but I don't see how Gerstein is "rewriting" anything other than the blogosphere's own self-congratulatory [and, given it lost the election, far less coherent] narrative. It's a little hard to see what exactly Lieberman was doing to "mislead" the voters; he was hardly hiding his light under a bushel on Iraq. [Yes, he's shifted his tactical stance since the election, but he's never wanted us to leave without winning]. And CT, with its relatively well-heeled and highly educated electorate, can't quite be treated with the contempt that the blogosphere normally showers on, say, the South. You might try considering the possibility that Connecticut voters simply have different priorities than you have--but that would require the blogosphere to cultivate some humility--fat chance.

Once the 2008 elections are done, replace Lieberman on the Senate Homeland Security Committee with Al Franken. Let the apoplectic Joe twist in the Republican wind.
Posted by: HomefriesDate: February 3, 2007 11:17 AM
"Has it not yet penetrated your skulls that the CT race was a debacle for the *blogosphere*?"
As I recall the blogosphere was instrumental in helping insure Lieberman did not run as a Democrat. That seems more like a victory to me.
It wasn't the blogosphere who decided that Lieberman maintained his seniority in the Party after stabbing it in the back. Nor was it the blogosphere who didn't bother to show up to support the Democratic nominee in CT.

david, i don't know what fantasy world you are inhabiting. in the real world, the progressive blogosphere supported lamont because he was willing to speak out forthrightly on the most important issue of the day.
it turned out that in doing so, he represented a majority of democrats. that's how primaries are supposed to work.
that lieberman is a vain and petty little narcissist who thinks he is critical to the national dialogue was evident in advance, and many of us (not everyone, but many) feared that lieberman could pull off a 3-way race win but it was worth it anyhow.
as for lieberman, if, as you say, he has always believed in "victory" (and who the hell can say, he's said so many pompous and empty comic book things about the war), then he's even stupider than i thought: there is no "victory" to be had in iraq.
but actually, lieberman hasn't always been for "victory" in iraq; he's always been for "whatever george bush says is going on in iraq is the case." he's told us for years how well things are going. he ran on the notion that no one wanted the troops home more than him. he told us many times how well we were doing and how the troops could begin coming home soon as a result.
right up until george bush decided otherwise.
frankly, he is an obnoxious, apalling, self-regarding little twit, an idiot and a pompous, self-promoting republican who pretends that he's an independent. i couldn't be happier that he was defeated in the democratic primary, even if we're stuck with him for now. he will be meaningless after 2008, and it can't happen soon enough.
and therefore, yes, gerstein is full of it.

Howard: No one has said it better than you.... We can only work and pray that in 2008 dear Joe will be irrelevant and returned to the dirt heap from whence he came and in 2012, we can send him to the hell he deserves. As for the people of CT, they are as blind and ignorant as the 50.09% who bought W's bag of shit in 2004.... unfortunately, they are just a little slower waking up....

By unabashedly misleading the voters.
Why is it so hard to write the word "lying"?
I was just over at the Daily Howler, and in an attempt to justify Biden's gaffe, Jay Carney described the "mainstream" someone who didn't come out of the civil rights movement. Leave aside that it would have been hard to be a successful black politician in the 70s and 80s without being involved with the civil rights movement. What struck me as I read the passage is that by that definition, Lieberman is not mainstream.
Posted by: jayackroydDate: February 3, 2007 11:55 AM
I must protest howard's assertion that Joe Lieberman takes his cues on Iraq from George Bush.
Everybody knows it's John McCain who does the thinkin' for Joe Lieberman.
Posted by: JimDate: February 3, 2007 12:07 PM
howard--
You should be concerned about a Unity08 McCain/Lieberman ticket. Broder would love that. All the republican candidates suck. The beltway hates Clinton, doesn't think much of Edwards and is already dissing Obama.

With all the blame being slung around about Lieberman's victory, why does no one blame Lamont for running an ineffective campaign? I seem to recall a lot of criticism here at TPMCafe about the fact that Lamont basically took a vacation after the primary.
Posted by: Ned BalzerDate: February 3, 2007 12:09 PM
Lamont's mistake was listening to the falsely, self proclaimed "centrists", following his primary victory. He never seemed to recover from that.
Posted by: HeideggerianDate: February 3, 2007 12:20 PM
Ned Balzer
Sure Lamont was criticized. First off, he got suckered. That "vacation" was the result of party leadership telling him that if he went silent for a while, they would talk Joe down. He shouldn't have believed them.
Second, he internalized the loony anti-war leftie attack. He was widely criticized in the media for having a one issue campaign--Lieberman's main talking point--and he responded by talking about other issues. This was a mistake, as it turned out.
In the end, he played it too safe. The independents didn't see enough of a difference between the two candidates.
But it would have been hard to call Joe a liar. That might well have backfired.
Posted by: jayackroydDate: February 3, 2007 12:25 PM
Joe's many lies are all laid out at LieberWatch:
http://lieberwatch.blogspot.com/
The six-part "Lieberman Project" that ran through January is a devastating takedown of Lieberman's campaign deceptions on Iraq.
Posted by: FarrellDate: February 3, 2007 12:36 PM
Lamont's mistake was in refusing to run to the center after his primary victory. He looked at his polling, saw that 25-30 percent of Democrats were still with Lieberman, realized he couldn't get beyond 40 percent of the vote without that changing, and then spent all his time attacking Lieberman for not being a "real Democrat." He turned everyone else off.
Sorry guys, but it was all out of YOUR playbook -- bitch and whine and cry about how out of step the other guy is because he doesn't adhere to your when agenda. It was pathetic and painful to watch (think of Lamont's Red Sox/Yankees ad).
It's funny, but even though Gerstein's assesment of the race may be illogical, it still has the virtue of being true -- because that's what the majority was thinking when they entered the ballot box that day.
And for the record, I beleive Lieberman is a disgrace.
But the bigger disgrace is the blogosphere elements who think that spit and bile is just as good or better than actual political strategy -- that it's easy to win a campaign as long as you are "progressive" enough -- and that the DC consultants lose because they want everyone to be "Republican-lite."
And then they get a candidate who believes this crap, and look what happens.
It's getting old, and in this case, it didn't accomplish a damn thing.
Posted by: PrognyDate: February 3, 2007 12:56 PM
Connecticut, like the entire U.S. must address the lies and misrepresentations by elected officials. If this sort of behavior is tolerated, without challenge, it will certainly continue.
The business of governance by lying bastards is our fault. Even in a Republic, the elected must regard the will of the people and must deliver on campaign rhetoric, or explain the reason for flip-flopping. Otherwise voters never know for what they are voting.
Elected officials who have given the big finger to the electorate must be punished, lest the bad behavior continue. The remedy, under the Constitution is removal from office. It should be easier for the State of Connecticut than it would be for a National liar and scoundrel, but the message sent will be heard, loudly and clearly, all over the world.

Lieberman would not legally have been allowed to file as an independent (after losing the primary) had the sos & the legislature moved up the primary. Why did they move up the primary in the first place?
Posted by: gcritDate: February 3, 2007 1:24 PM
Lamont did very well, given that he was running against the GOP candidate (Schlesinger) another de facto Republican who enjoyed the advantage of incumbency(Liebermann), and also had to buck the 30% of conservative CT Democrats who stuck with Liebermann. It is also worth pointing out that even though Lamont was his party's legitimate candidate, he got almost no help from the Party establishment in Washington. In that light, I regard Lamont's participation in this race a tremendous victory, and a real accomplishment that was due in large part to the progressive blogosphere. Disappointed as some of us may be in the outcome, the CT race for Senate gives progressives cause for optimism, not discouragement.
Posted by: global yokelDate: February 3, 2007 1:30 PM
It was also a victory because it revealed that the current Democratic leadership still values the 30% "centrists" higher than it does the 70% dirty hippie computer user set, even though they are now paying the unclean 70% more lip service now.
Posted by: DerekDate: February 3, 2007 1:38 PM
Why does anyone really care what Lieberman says anymore? We're stuck with him for another 6 years. He's going to pull the same old crap about being the only reasonable man left in America, how he's above party divisions and how we could have peace, harmony and bi-partisanship if only the rest of America agreed with him and Bush. We've heard this spiel for several years, he's got nothing new to add to it. He's the Al Sharpton of the David Broder set. The best thing we can do now is just ignore him or make him a target of fun instead of anger. At this point, he's almost like an Onion story.
Posted by: GuscatDate: February 3, 2007 2:04 PM
The fact that Lamont beat Lieberman in the primary, and that the Democrats stormed back to take both houses of Congress, is enough to stifle any "debacle" talk about the blogosphere. Somehow I missed the names Jon Tester and Jim Webb in David's comments. Lieberman had a huge Republican constituency waiting to push him over the top, and it is far from clear what "moving to the center" would have meant for Lamont for him to overcome that-- disowning Kos and advocating tax breaks for small businesses?

"has good reason to be pissed off, given that their Senator misled them so blatantly."
Why are you afraid to say he lied?
Date: February 3, 2007 2:17 PM
Yes, LIEberman lied, but hey, the Republicans love him, because the GOP was sending out talking points about how to pimp him. Bush and company love him, because he acts like their sock puppet. AIPAC and the neocon-Straussians love him, because the subtext of everything he utters is beholden to them. And there's not a damned thing that the Democratic Party or the majority of Connecticut voters can do about it until 2008, unless Craig Thomas abruptly resigns because of his leukemia. LIEberman can keep lying all he wants, and we'll all just have to deal with it. Suck it up, folks, the Democrats got punk'd with this punk.

I'd love to know what factors really won it for Joe. Maybe Gerstein is smart, but he was running against a guy who ran a campaign for all of 10 months.
What they ran was a brilliant bait-and-switch campaign in a state where defense contracts are needed and where the combat death rate per capita is among the lowest in the US. As long as lip service was there, a critical number of voters were willing to believe what they heard from that campaign.
They ran some incredibly effective, polished, and misleading ads. As far as anger goes, I had none until that bogus 'layoffs' ad came out. Funny Gerstein did not mention it. It was the only actual lie to be passed by either campaign. It was too low even for Joe, or so I thought. Anger only boiled over when Joe covered his mic at the New London debate and growled obscenities at Lamont for using facts against him.
Gerstein's genius lay in two effective 'strategies:' He managed to make the state forget that Lieberman's net worth is probably in the millions, and he pulled a mini-Rove by taking the most positive candidate and getting a negative rep out in front of him.
Lastly, there was some good judgement made by allowing voters to fill in the vacuous idea of bi-partisanship in the Norquist/Rove/bush era with an older assumption that bi-partisan meant centrist, and therefore not extreme.

Liebermann isnt a skunk by any stretch. All he is doing is being the Senator from Israel, not Connecticut. It is what it is, it is that simple. Not that Israel doesnt deserve a strong voice in American politics, it does, but it is clear that Joe sees his constituency there rather than in Hartford, Greenwich and New Haven.

I'm one of those 30% conservative Dems in CT who voted for Lieberman. I was going to vote for Ned Lamont, but the relentless attack waged by the sorriest excuses for local Democrats turned me off. I have been involved in party politics for 25 years, and I have never seen such divisive and pig headed vitriol leveled at a man who had faithfully served this state for many more years. Joe Lieberman deserved better. I should mention that since the election, the same folks who rallied around Lamont are nowhere to be seen and while we still have candidates that need support and volunteers, these so called Democrats aren't trying to build the party, they are trying to destroy it.

Hey Real CT Voter
Hope you're happy. What Joe deserves is a distant third to what the citizens of Connecticut and the United States as a whole deserve. As for Lamonts followers being relentless attackers, where have you been while the Republicans (Joe's BFF this time out) turned that sort of thing into a science? Good for you being involved in local party politics for all that time, but I need to ask, for what ends? Are those ends being served by the war? Are they being served by Joe's undermining the party by attacking other Democrats by name every week? Whatever, in 2009 he'll be marginalized by a new Democratic majority that won't need him any longer and a republican minority that already despises him. Great for your state's interests!

I give Real CT Voter credit for speaking up.
I'm sorry to hear that you changed your vote not for anything Lamont did. Sounds like you felt Joe might not deserve to get re-elected but you felt bad for him. I saw a lot of that pollstanding.
Please remember that Democrats might have felt more strongly than others in the state, since he wasted a lot of the state's energy running in a primary he would not respect. That did a lot to divide the party in CT, such as it is.
Join us on the Connecticut blogs and you'll see we're still plugging away. Volunteering, etc.
Finally, you never told us if you are happy with his performance, or if you feel he's doing what you sent him to do.

sad but true, among the 30 pct of dems who voted for holy joe were the "barely informed" who don't follow politics like any of the people reading and contributing to this blog. it is hard for us to imagine, but there were dems who were opposed to the war who didn't even know where the candidates stood on the issues. i saw a young CT voter on "Hardball" just a few weeks before the election who proudly proclaimed his support for holy joe only to shake his head no when chris matthews said, "then that means you support the war?" it makes me want to stick needles in my eyeballs when such poorly informed people haul themselves into the voting booth!

Oh, come on. What's all this about the bad ol' blogosphere...Lamont too soft, too hard left..too anti-war. The main reason Lieberman won was because three quarters of the Republicans voted for him in the general election. Period.
Posted by: acanthusDate: February 3, 2007 10:29 PM
The fact is that Lamont didn't run an inspiring campaign. He didn't connect with a lot of rank & file Democrats & independents who were looking for a reason to vote for him, but didn't want to lose their senior Senator by electing a schmuck. I have family up in Stamford CT who voted for Lamont in the primary and then were totally disappointed by him in the general campaign (they still voted for him, but they saw that he wasn't attracting the fence sitters). His was an uphill battle and he didn't impress. Compare Lamont to Webb & Tester - he didn't have the charisma.
Posted by: willDate: February 4, 2007 3:35 AM
The Democrats who helped elect him knew exactly what they were doing, and you don't hear complaints from the Democratic Speaker of the Connecticut House of Represenentatives who supported him after the primary, and you don't hear complaints from the Democratic Mayor of Waterbury who did so too.
Get over it. The people voted, Lieberman won the most votes. That's what is called a democracy.
Posted by: SageDate: February 4, 2007 7:37 AM
I drove from NJ to CT to canvass for Lamont for the primary and the general and I'd like to point out one thing: we were *not* angry lunatics who turned off the voters. We were hopeful and earnest.
The problem was that the Dem establishment were hedging their bets and went with Lieberman because they thought he was a sure thing. He would caucus with them. It was a short sighted matter of numbers for them. So, the stalled Lamont after the primary, made promises they didn't intend to keep and offered him no real assistance. To Schumer et al, it didn't really matter who won because the Dems would benefit either way so it was not worthy of any extra effort.
Then, there is the money, and this is where the CT voters should be most angry. Lieberman benefitted from a huge amount of money from not just Republicans but the American Jewish community, aka Bloomberg and the NY Jewish community. AIPAC made sure Lieberman wanted for nothing. I am not an antisemite. I just don't like the extraordinary influence that Israel has on our foreign policy. Israel has us poke its enemies in the eye on the international playground and then it hides behind us. It made up the funds that Lieberman lost to Lamont after the primary. More than one voter was very angry with Bloomberg's interference but were resigned to the fact that it would probably work.
So, there you have it. CT lost a senator and Israel gained one. No wonder they're angry.

One of the reasons 30% of the Democrats voted for him is the decidedly disgusting anti-Israel feeling expressed by Lamont supporters, although, to his credit, Lamont himself supported Israel's right to defend itself against Hezbollah and Hamas attacks. That same anti-Israel attitude is evident here. Joe Lieberman believes it is in AMERICA'S national interest that Israel be strong and secure. His voting record and statements on that subject are no different than Chris Dodd's, Rosa DeLauro's, Barney Frank's, Jerry Nadler's, Henry Waxman's, Barbara Mikulski's, and Charlie Rangel's. I couldf name over a hundred liberal Democrats in Congress who have the same positions as Joe Lieberman aabout Israel. Are all those liberal Democrats just representing Israel too?

Every time you spew anti-Israel hate, and lament the fact that American Jews are exercising their First Amendment freedom to support candidates of their choosing, I don't care whether you take pains to deny you are being anti-semitic. Know this: we Jews are not going to keep giving more support to liberal Democrats than any other segment of the white electorate--which they have-- if the Democtratic Party gets hijacked by people like you.
Posted by: SageDate: February 4, 2007 8:07 AM
Sage is a good example of why people hate Lieberman. He first sets up his lie, all Lamont supporters are anti-Semites, then he goes on to smear his fellow Americans with the lie that he has created.
Lieberman did the same thing. In addition to supporting the lies about Iraq he also went on to accuse anyone who didn't believe the Iraq lies of being anti-American and of supporting the terrorists. He did this at a time when many of the so-called anti-Americans were arguing that we should stay focused on the war on terrorism.
Lieberman is still employing his cheap smear tactics to this day. Anyone who disagrees with his hero Bush is a terrorist sympathizer. However, even Republicans are calling him on his lies now.
The man is total disgrace who deserves all the hatred and scorn that is poured on him.

It is the same old story, if you can't stand on the field of reason and common-sense resort to fallacious forms of arguments to press your particular ideology. The list is long but the "Sages" and "Lieberman's" of the world tend to fall back on a standard set of misrepresentations of rational discourse, the Red herring, the straw man, ad hominem, argument from ignorance, appeals to false authority and a few others. They are the daily staple of right-wing rhetoric.
Take today's example:
"Every time you spew anti-Israel hate, and lament the fact that American Jews are exercising their First Amendment freedom to support candidates of their choosing, I don't care whether you take pains to deny you are being anti-semitic."
Personally, I have never spewed "anti-Israel hate" nor have I ever lamented the fact that they are exercising their rights. However, I guess that doesn't matter since I am guilty no matter what the facts show. I always assumed that Jewish people tended to be Liberal for a reason.
Republicans like Sage and Lieberman, Coulter and Limbaugh prefer to stick to a rigorous mixture of the straw man and the ad hoc argument in the daily soup of fallacious rhetoric that they serve every day. "All Liberals are anti-Semites. All Liberals hate America and American soldiers. Those Liberals who disagreed with Iraq are opposed to the War on Terror. All Liberals drive around in limos, with their fancy internet connections, and hate Conservatives, etc.."
Posted by: DerekDate: February 4, 2007 1:30 PM
Lieberman's campaign was a series of coded messages to Repblicans and conservatives in CT. The Weicker bear ad was run during the primary but its target was old-timey repubs who hated Weicker for going all common-sense on them. The partisan tag was code that Lamont was a liberal. The "angry left" tag which we can expect to see pop up from time to time is a calculated effort to split progressives nationally. The only thing we can do is keep talking to our neighbors, the ones who are traditionally moderate Democrats, who don't like the Iraq war, and keep reminding them that the DC pols are not representing their viewpoint, the majority viewpoint, at all.

I live here in CT, and I guess I missed all the anti-Semitic Lamont supporters...
Lieberman won because he masterfully lied to the voters, because a whole swath of Republican voters voted for him, thanks to the inept Alan Schlesinger, because he was able to convince those "Independent" voters that he had the experience, the connections, the maturity that Lamont didn't have, because Lamont stumbled, badly, after the primary, because Lamont never got the support of national Dems, and because those national Dems and many of the voters in CT badly underestimated Lieberman's duplicity and delusions. Blame CT voters all you want, but many people, reporters and politicians alike, who should know better, have fallen for Senator Lieberman's bullshit. Don't blame CT's Democratic voters. We voted for Lamont.

It is too easy to predict a response of "anti-semite" to any comment that thinks the amount of influence and deference paid to Israel by the American political establishment is too large. Can anyone tell me why America's interests should align with Israel any more than other countries in the world? Does it help the US to be seen as Israel's ally and protector?
Why is it ok that Israel has nukes and yet has not been subjected to sanctions? Why is it ok to send a billion dollars a year in aid and to transfer advanced military technology to a country that is actively creating an apartheid state, disenfranchising and expropriating property from a despised minority?
Once again, with feeling: being opposed to favoritsim towards Israel in American policy is not the same as being anti-Jewish and thus anti-semitic. The only way it might make logical sense is if one conflates being Jewish with being Israeli.
The reason so many liberal and conservative politicians alike espouse pro-Israel views is that the AIPAC and similar Israel supporters bring a lot of money and bullet-voting political weight to bear on the subject...by convincing many American Jews that they must identify with the Israeli state. Which is a very powerful self-reinforcing spiral: tightening the link between Jewish identity and Israeli identity. So much so, that anti-Israel comments are met by a misplaced, but presumably heart-felt, shout of "anti-semite".

I think it's amusing to see people claiming that Lieberman was re-elected by the "reasonable" Democrats. Let's not forget that he not only had a base of voters who had supported him in statewide races for decades, but he also had the support of the Republican Party in the general. He also benefitted from the fact that so many Democratic heavyweights campaigned for him in the primary (which makes it such a joke when Republicans talk about how the Dems "abandoned" Lieberman) thus giving him the imprimatur of a Democratic endorsement.
From what I can see, Lamont did run a weak campaign, especially with the post-primary vacation. But I find it hard to swallow hearing from a supposed Democratic activist who bailed on his party in the general election. Was Lamont really so terrible that you had to take a chance of losing control of the Senate? And how can any party activist stomach Lieberman after 2000, when he ran for VP and Senate at the same time? He was willing to see his seat handed to the Republicans if he was elected VP. I know if I worked to re-elect a guy, and he turned around and handed his seat to the other party, I would never forgive him.

Anyone who followed the CT-Sen election knows that Lieberman was as two faced as any pol can get during his run with the CT for Lieberman party.
Sure 30% of Dems voted for him, but let's not forget that the L-man has been in CT politics for many, many yrs. That power of incumbency weighed on many including the Speaker of the CT House - James Amman. Pompous himself (see http://www.jamesamann.com/) he claimed that Camp Lamont never called him while Holy Joe was ringing up the cell phone minutes. He owed Joe for starting his career.
Many voters took Joe at his word and let the smoke and mirrors put out by his spin machine garner him a victory. Many of those Dems who got his vote were older voters who Joe targeted with robo calls and scared them that an "extreme liberal" was threatening their SS funds.
One guy knew Joe personally when he was a local pol, told me Joe was an arrogant SOB. In spite of that, he had bought into the R talking points and said he could not vote for Ned. Joe had mail ad’s specifically for R’s with Mr. McCann splashed about. Hey, Shrub’s Brain said it was Ok for R’s to vote for Joe.
I went to the first live debate. I thought the questions asked by many of these panelist were not sharp enough to tag Joe the Red color he so deservers. I still recall Joe's comment to Alan about how he “didn't expect to get hammered” about a stance from the R side. The media here in CT folded and bought into Joe's BS more than anyone.
As someone commented earlier, the primary race was important nationally in that the displeasure over the waste that has been our Iraq experience helped launch the victory of the Dems in Oct. Only a matter of time till Mr. Lier is put out to pasture.

Re Howard: "Lieberman is a vain and petty little narcissist" - as is every citizen in the town of Greenwich. I mean really, people, its CT. Bloggers who were surprised by the Lieberman victory cleary haven't met these people.
Posted by:Date: February 5, 2007 10:36 AM
Wow. That's an insightful analysis into the Connecticut voter. Nothing like taking Greenwich, which is representative of, well, only Greenwich, and tarring the rest of the state with the same stereotype. Which people was anonymous talking about with this statement: "Bloggers who were surprised by the Lieberman victory clearly haven't met these people." The people in lower middle class Waterbury who went big for Lieberman? Or the people in obscenely wealthy Greenwich?
