A Care Package For The Media: Ten Examples Of Lieberman Vowing To Stay With Dems
February 23, 2007 -- 1:31 PM EST // View Comments (155) // Post a Comment

Okay, so we've prepared a little Joe Lieberman care package for people to email to reporters and/or commentators when they talk about Lieberman switching parties.

Here's what's in it. We've compiled lots and lots and lots of examples of Lieberman swearing up and down to the voters of Connecticut that he'd stay with the Dems. And all this research can be yours -- for free!

As we've detailed here lots of times, we think the "will he switch" storyline is a crock. It seems apparent to us that he won't do this, mainly because the Dems are positioned to increase their majority in 2008 and if Lieberman switched he'd risk ending up in the minority for years, reducing him to irrelevance. Lieberman doesn't want to think of himself as irrelevant. He wants to think of himself as important. Yet when speculating on the question of whether he'll switch, the big news orgs simply refuse to address it with any basic skepticism, thus puffing up Lieberman's importance and telling the story precisely the way he wants it told.

No, the real reason to highlight Lieberman's switch talk is this: It shows that in the quest for attention Lieberman is cheerfully willing to threaten to break a promise he made to Connecticut voters again and again and again. Weirdly, the fact that he vowed repeatedly before Election Day to stick with the Dems is frequently absent from reports on his switch hints -- even though it's hard to think of a piece of information that's more vital to this topic. So, in view of the fact that Lieberman appears determined to keep this storyline alive, we're hoping that this modest care package will somehow find its way to reporters and commentators who are dealing with the subject. We stopped at ten examples.

So let's get started.

(1) Here's Joe Lieberman on CNN about a month before the primary:

"Let me make clear that I am a Democrat and I will remain a Democrat. I'm not gonna be unaffiliated if I have to petition my way on to the ballot. I'm gonna be a Democrat. And I will caucus with the Democrats, and look forward to caucusing with the Senate Democratic Majority."

(2) Here's Lieberman in an interview with New York magazine on August 7, 2006:

Lieberman thinks of going independent as a pragmatic ploy, not an abandonment of his party. “I’ve been a Democrat for 40 years, I’ll die a Democrat, I’ll probably be a Democrat after my death, I may still be voting Democrat in some cities in Connecticut postmortem,” he jokes.

(3) Here's Lieberman senior adviser Dan Gerstein, in an interview with me on August 15, 2006:

Here's the answer given by Lieberman senior adviser Dan Gerstein: "Senator Lieberman is a Democrat, will continue to be a Democrat and is committed to caucusing with the Democrats should he be reelected. If reelected, he is absolutely committed to supprting Senator Reid as leader, and he very much hopes it will be as majority leader."

The other seven after the jump.

(4) Lieberman senior adviser Dan Gerstein in the New Haven Register, August 24, 2006:

"They can’t change the fact that he’s a Democrat who has a strong progressive record," Gerstein said of Lieberman.

"Joe Lieberman is a Democrat, he will be a Democrat and he is committed to being part of the (U.S. Senate) Democratic caucus if he’s re-elected," said Gerstein.

(5) Lieberman quoted by the New York Times's political blog, The Empire Zone, on October 3, 2006:

So let’s play a little game of what if — as in, what if the Democrats and the Republicans split the Senate? Would Mr. Lieberman still align himself with the Democratic senators who have lined up behind his opponent?

"I’ve given my word that’s what I intend to do. I am going to caucus with the Democrats."

(6) Lieberman quoted in The Washington Post on October 17, 2006:

Running as an independent, he said, was not his first choice. "But I feel in the right place. I'm going to organize with the Democrats, but I'm going to put the interests of the people who sent me, and the country, ahead of party."

(7) Lieberman spokesperson Tammy Sun, quoted by Fox News on November 4, 2006:

"Joe Lieberman has repeatedly said that if re-elected to the Senate, he will absolutely caucus with the Democrats,"Lieberman spokeswoman Tammy Sun said.

(8) Lieberman on Fox News on November 7, 2006 (via Nexis):

SEN. LIEBERMAN: No -- that's right. You know, you've got to sign up with a caucus to protect your seniority. That's important for my state. I'd said I've been a member of the Democratic Caucus; I'd stay that way.

(9) Lieberman on Don Imus just before Election Day:

"You've gotta join one caucus or another to protect your seniority so I said early during the primary, when I first said I'd run as an independent, that I'd join the Democratic caucus so I'd keep my seniority."

And finally...

(10) Lieberman on Meet the Press on November 12, 2006:

MR. RUSSERT: You will caucus with the Democrats?

SEN. LIEBERMAN: I will caucus with the Democrats. I said that to my constituents throughout. I’m going to caucus with the Democrats both because it’s good for my constituents in Connecticut, because I retained my seniority, I become a committee chair, but also I want to continue to work to bring the party back to its historic traditions of, of strength on national security, foreign policy and innovation, and progress in domestic policy—the, the Harry Truman/John F. Kennedy Democrat that, that I was raised to be.

Special thanks to crack TPM reporter/researcher Eric Kleefeld for help digging these out.

Update: Over at Swampland Ana Marie Cox has a good post on the media's treatment of the bogus "he's gonna switch" storyline.

COMMENTS:

The Democrats can't up their Senate majority soon enough. Lieberman is having it both ways -- he claims majority status, but doesn't even have the courage of his convictions. Either he IS a Democrat (as he surely once was) and believes in what the party can do (as he surely once did). Or, he's moved in a different direction, in which case, he's only claiming affinity with the majority to protect his power. What the fuck is that?

This doesn't track exactly, but here's what a real Democrat does in Joe's situation.

Back in 1972, Joe Moakley, one of the greatest men ever to come out of Massachusetts politics, lost the Democratic primary to the bigoted hag, Louisa Day Hicks. He, like Liberman, then ran as an independent -- which was a contraversial thing to do -- and beat the Southie Democratic machine (even as he was a Southie native).

As a Congressman, he dedicated himself to his constituents — and human rights in Central America. He comported himself with grace, humility and a sense of justice.

Of course, he also said this: "You're born, baptized, enrolled in the Democratic Party and given a union card."

agreed -- the sooner they up their majority, the better. of course, before that happens, we may be treated to one last howl for attention from lieberman, who may opt to switch because the GOP will lavish lots of attention and perks on him which Dems might stop granting once their majority increases...

Read yesterday's "Political Wire" story on how it won't matter if Leiberman were to switch, the Senate would remain in the Dem's hands. I keep wondering why no one else is featuring this fact in their blogs. He's not going to change parties for all the reasons you gave. However, the Senate Dems don't have to keep kissing his arse 'cause he can't really hurt them if it is true that the Senate won't change hands if he were to change parties. Please comment.

Lieberman seems typical of the modern-day spineless weasels we keep sending to Congress. Most of them seem too caught up in their seniority benefits and their PR images to actually offer focused leadership to their constituents and their country. Geffen was right when he said "they all lie" to preserve their perks and power. They ought to go out and get a job and let some new rascals take over for a while. How much worse can it get, for God's sake?

Why is this story getting so much mileage? This was posted yesterday at politicalinsider.com

February 22, 2007
Lieberman Switch Wouldn't Flip Senate

With Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) publicly stating he'd consider becoming a Republican if Democrats block new funding for the Iraq War, many Democrats worry that control of the Senate hangs in the balance. However, their fears are unfounded. Many think back to 2001 when former Sen. Jim Jeffords (I-VT) began caucusing with Democrats instead of Republicans, taking control of the Senate out of GOP hands. However, the two situations - though outwardly similar - contain one important difference.

If Lieberman were to caucus with the Republicans, they would still not take full control of the Senate, despite Vice President Dick Cheney's ability to break 50-50 ties. This is because of a little-known Senate organizing resolution, passed in January, which gives Democrats control of the Senate and committee chairmanships until the beginning of the 111th Congress.

What's the difference between now and 2001? A small but important distinction. When the 107th Congress was convened on January 3, 2001, Al Gore was still the Vice President and would be for another two-and-a-half weeks. Therefore, because of the Senate's 50-50 tie, Democrats had nominal control of the chamber when the organizing resolution came to a vote. With Dick Cheney soon to come in, however, Democrats allowed Republicans to control the Senate in return for a provision on the organizing resolution that allowed for a reorganization of the chamber if any member should switch parties, which Jeffords did five months later. There was no such clause in the current Senate's organizing resolution.

Lieberman gave it all away when he said he would caucus with the Democrats in order to keep his seniority - as blatant an example of this all being about him as you can find.

And while his teasing and toying on both sides of the aisle have implications for the Senate Dems' ability to move legislation through, the people who really need to get in his face are his Connecticut constituents. A lor of noise coming from Connecticut, exposing his abandonment of the promises and views he expressed in order to win re-election would be an important thing to do.

As much of a weasel as Joe is, I have to put some of the blame for this continuing to be an issue on Harry Reid; he has kow-towed and caved in to Joe every time Joe made any noises about switching his party affiliation - so of course Joe has no reason to think he cannot continue to get what he wants without having to give anything in return.

I will not be sorry to see him made totally useless with a larger Democratic majority.

WTF? What's the MOST important story right now? I'd say Iraq. A close second is Iran. Who has killed the Democratic Party from forming a more aggressive posture to counter the Bush insanity? Joe Lieberman. He is, in no small way, a warmonger during a time of war. He is a major, major part of the problem. A problem which is the biggest issue the nation (and the Democratic Party) currently faces. So what, on Earth, is your point?

The second part gives away the game, of course. It's a pathetic and bizarre attempt to slam a fairly (but not completely) successful grassroots movement inspired as a direct action against the war. Something you liken to 'stealing elections' (in what way, genius?)

If we're mad, you fool, it's because of the losers who voted for a guy who enables an endlessly disasterous war at the expense of someone who would have been a sure vote against it.

Jay B., I have a hunch Mary isn't really a disinterested commenter, and that that isn't really this person's name, whoever she/he is. That's because Mary regularly pops up to make exactly this same point about the Kossacks when this blog criticizes Lieberman.

The reiteration of the point about the blogosphere -- which has been the Lieberman camp's preferred method of marginalizing and discrediting criticism of him -- suggests that Mary could actually be one of his former (or current) operatives. I have no way of knowing this for sure, but it seems at least possible.

"So, in view of the fact that Lieberman appears determined to keep this storyline alive . . ."

It appears that it is the MEDIA that is determined to keep this storyline alive. Why else would they trumpet what Lieberman calls a "very remote possibility" of switching parties.

Lieberman did not bring this "storyline" up on his own, but in response to a question from the reporter.

I agree that it would be a terrible breach of trust if he switched parties, but he has shown no likelihood of doing so. This is just silly.

By the way, I (like Mary) agree that this obsession on Lieberman in the blogosphere does smack of sour grapes that the Lamont "victory" by the blogosphere was so short-lived. And, no, I am not any sort of Lieberman "operative." Your suggestion that Mary is one (as if no one else could disagree with you or the Kossacks) reeks of paranoia.

I think he should step down and run as a Republican.
That would be the honorable thing to do. But since he lied to the voters of Conn he won't do that. I voted for him in 2000 - and his actions since that time just make me sad. I used to think so highly of him but since he lost in the primary he's just been acting like a spoiled brat - so you see he'll fit right in with the Republicans!

Greg, the 111th Congress won't be sworn in until January 2009, after the next Congressional elections. In which case, given that Democrats are likely to increase their number of seats in the Senate, such considerations will be moot.

For an interesting take on this story, check out David Sirota's recent blog entry entitled "I Hope Joe Lieberman Becomes A Republican". Sen. Lieberman can keep his smug mug on if he threatens to jump, but never does. No doubt he'll keep reminding us to keep his name in the headlines.

By the way, I must also join with Mary and Marc in noting the vapidity of this obsession with Lieberman. This subject wastes more of the small pool of electrons inside your computers, and clearly the TPM site is focusing on this to the exclusion of all other topics. Sheesh, it's not like anyone can walk and chew gum at the same time, either.

(Yes, it's sarcasm. And I know that it's gotten harder to tell in the past few years.)

Sorry, Mary: I suspect that this story has wings because Joe Lieberman planted it as leverage to keep Democrats from pressuring him.

Joe must be aware that the Democrats are likely to keep the Congress and increase their majority in the next election. That means his ability to maneuver and make headlines is very limited.

I think that this story represents Joe saying: Democrats, watch out, I might leave, so you'd better give me what I want.

But I think it's false posturing, and would be very surprised if Joe turned away from the Dems.

Irregardless of party there is the simple fact that elected office holders are there at the grace of their constituents. When a clear
majority have shown the war to be wrong and the troops are to be
returned to the USA then these elected office holders have a clear
mandate to make it so. Mr. Lieberman has show his true concern is
with his power and supposed loyality. He is a fool.

I'm no fan of Lieberman, but it seems to me he did keep his promise and did indeed caucus with the Dems. Let's not forget the Dems provided Joe with his precious Homeland Security Committee chair. Since the rules for organizing the Senate (as explained in an above post) were voted on in January with Lieberman caucusing with the Dems I don't see any reall issue here. Its nothing but a way to keep Joe's name in the media. Let him flip now after helping to hand over control to the Dems- it makes no difference.

The assumption that Lieberman wouldn't switch parties because he's too rational to put himself out of power when the Democrats take power in 2008 assumes that you think he believes that will happen and is rational. That second point might be debatable, considering his positions on Iraq for the past decade.

Lieberman was advocating for an invasion of Iraq in November 2001, even before the Bush administration was publicly pushing their cooked intelligence. As far back as January of 1998, he was unhapy because members of Congress and diplomats around the world thought his call for military action against Iraq was a bad idea.

http://www.cnn.com/ALLPOLITICS/1998/02/13/congress.iraq/

If it's comforting to think he's not nutty enough to jump ship, feel free to go ahead and think that, but people thought Zell Miller was a Democrat not that long ago.

Posted by: darrelplant
Date: February 23, 2007 4:12 PM

Another reason LIEberman won't switch is that he's more useful to the Administration and the other NeoCons as a Democrat. He can lend an illusion of bipartisanship, helping these outlaws make their outrages seem reasonable.

I wish he WOULD switch. As far as I'm concerned, the Dems don't really have a majority with him there anyway.

Another reason he won't switch is because he'd no longer hold the balance of the Senate in his hands.

Joe wants to feel important, protect his vision of Israeli interests (quite possibly unrelated to more rational versions of Israeli or broader Jewish interests), and his corporate sponsors, who are ever more heavily dependent on war for their profits.

The Democrats' problem is that Chokin' Joe has already gone over to the Dark Side. Anything they tell him in or out of caucus will promptly go to Darth Cheney. His vote is already reliably Republican on the most contentious issues the Senate faces, including any public criticism of this war and its conduct.

Is it time for Sen. Reid to bite the bullet and make an exception to precedent, and remove Joe from his all important committee chairmanship? The bust up couldn't possibly derail Democratic prospects in the Senate any more than Lieberman's efforts have already.

Josh Marshall, on July 26th, incredulous that Joe Klein would suggest that Joe Lieberman was trying to get both the Democratic and Republican nomination for US Senate:

"Can this be true? I'm not sure if the idea here is that Lieberman actually gamed his criticism of President Bush for the meager advantage of not having any challenger this year as opposed to whatever shlub the state GOP planned to send up against him on an electoral suicide run or whether he just wanted the bipartisanship hat trick of dual nomination.

In any case, the thought strikes me as highly implausible. Joe's kid gloves with the president and failure to take a stand on the disaster that has become of Iraq seems far more likely to be characterological or an effort to work Beltway opinion. But Klein seems to really think there might be something to this theory. Has anyone else heard anything about this?" Josh Marshall

Has Josh (or David Kurtz) ever publicly apologized for placing such wet sloppy kisses on Lieberman's lips?

Marc,

Yeah, sour grapes. That's what it is. We hated his politics, sanctimony and warmongering for years, a guy who shared this ran against him with considerable grassroots and Democratic support (in CT), wins the primary and loses in the general -- and we go right on criticising him and wishing he didn't represent Democrats in any significant way.

How is this "sour grapes" and not, say, consistency? I think most of us agree Lieberman won the election with Republican support and kept enough Democrats on board with his "I'm a Democrat 'til I die" bullshit, but now we're not supposed to call him out on his perpetual undercutting of the Democratic party and its message?

If you think the open flirtation of switching parties with control of the Senate potentially on the line (and with it, the resumption of ruinous Republican policies) isn't significant good on you.

But for those of us disgusted by the man (his campaign lying about holding the administration accountable on Katrina, then ditching that post-election and declining to even hold hearings on the matter pissed me off more than this, actually), it's fascinating to watch this fraud still get away with this crap -- even with so much at stake.

Jay B-

OK, it's sour grapes and consistency. Call him out on whatever you want. But his statement that there is a "very remote possibility" of switching parties is not exactly "open flirtation". If there were a real, as opposed to "very remote", possibility of Republicans retaking the Senate, I think this would be relevant. But there isn't and it's not. What's up Greg's butt that he loves focusing on this issue?

I guess my point is that this is a dead issue. Criticizing about the failure to hold Katrina hearings is an actual response to an actual issue and is a more credible criticism of Lieberman. This issue is just media-created nonsense.

(Wikipedia) Believe me, the disdain for Lieberman that you see here is not feigned, and this is no "false denial of desire" to have him sitting in the Senate -- we didn't want him in the Senate before the election, either!

I have more of a preverse take on the LIeberman issue that is somewhat different than those posed above. Bear in mind that about 13 or more Democratic Senators either supported Lieberman AFTER he won the primary or declined to take a position on this race. And a fair number of them were from blue/purple states like Carl Levin the chair of Armed Services. Also Boxer and Bill Clinton both came to CT to campaign for Joe during the primary yet failed to show up for Lamont after he won the primary. Keep in mind too that both Schumer and Reid stood silent allowing Lieberman to campaign as if his seniority had been guaranteed in a private deal. And don't forget either how the Dems welcomed Joe back to the Senate to cheers and applause and a standing ovation.

So I say, let them live with what they wished for and let them have to suffer with him for a while longer. They deserve it. From what I have heard reported, the Dems have been openly grumbling about him and aren't at all happy about Joe and have trouble even discussing Iraq in his company. It serves them right for not working harder to make sure Lamont became the next Senator from CT. Joe isn't going to switch parties. He made too many promises to voters that he would caucus with the Dems and he isn't going to want to lose his Committee and Seniority either as part of a minority GOP party in 2008. It also isn't likely his one vote is going to change anything in Iraq either for the worse. Let Joe isolate himself on Iraq with the far right loons like McCain in the GOP who will be marginalized and hopefully defeated in the next election.

We should all be concentrating hard on getting more GOP Senators to defect from Bush on Iraq and not worry about Lieberman. He will bury himself and hopefully the voters in CT will not elect him ever again.
