Rightie Pundit Who Published Faked Lincoln Quote Is Back -- But Lincoln Expert Smacks Him Down

Via this excellent column by Greg Mitchell, it looks as if Frank J. Gaffney Jr. is back on the Lincoln beat again. And the results, it must be said, are unsightly indeed.

You remember Gaffney. He's the prominent conservative Washington Times columnist who got roundly pilloried for publishing an infamously fake Lincoln quote last week in his Times column.

Now Gaffney's "back in the ring to take another swing," as the venerable ACDC lyric has it. In his latest column, Gaffney apologizes for the quote. But then he goes right ahead and continues suggesting that Lincoln's war conduct still nonetheless shows that current war opponents should be "held accountable" for their "dissent."

Given how often war boosters are throwing around the words of Lincoln these days, I thought it was time to check in with a real, live Lincoln expert. So I called up Harold Holzer, a Lincoln expert who's the author, most recently, of the book "Lincoln at Cooper Union: The Speech That Made Abraham Lincoln President."

Holzer's take? Gaffney's historically anology doesn't hold up. At all. It's wrong, wrong, wrong.

First, here's Gaffney's latest:

I regret the error and should, instead, have used the following, verbatim excerpt from a letter President Lincoln wrote in June 1863, as Robert E. Lee's army was on the march north to the fateful battle of Gettysburg. Mr. Lincoln wrote this letter after the arrest of a leading Confederate sympathizer legislator (or "Copperheads" as they were then known), U.S. Rep. Clement L. Vallandigham, Ohio Democrat. It forcefully explains the commander in chief's thinking about the latitude the Constitution affords to "silence" anti-war "agitators" whose conduct "damages the Army" and threatens to leave the nation without the military means to "suppress" its enemies...
It is fitting that we reflect carefully on Abe Lincoln's insights and strong words, not just because this is the time of year we celebrate his remarkable life and momentous presidency. His views are all the more salient as congressional "agitators" once again justify their vehement opposition to the incumbent president's war efforts with denunciations of "a wicked Administration of a contemptible Government." Now, as then, they threaten the adequacy of the military force needed to "suppress" a violent insurgency. Whether we choose to recognize it or not, today as in 1863, the very "life of the nation" hangs in the balance if we fail to defeat the coming nexus of weapons of mass destruction in the hands of Islamofascists...

Abraham Lincoln understood the difference between constructive dissent and treacherous agitation. There is no mistaking his determination to "silence" the latter through means he judged to be constitutional.

So what does Holzer, our expert, think of this? First, note Gaffney's application of the word "agitators" to current war critics. This inadvertently points to the most obvious difference between then and now: As Holzer points out, the Civil War took place here and the Iraq war constitutes a war abroad.. "This is completely different," Holzer says. "One is a state of rebellion, the other is a state of war. The Constitution has different provisions for a state of rebellion. Lincoln is always used as an example for those who want to argue for repression at home [now], but the context is completely different."

Holzer continued: "In fact, it's very hard to imagine another President or leader being as tolerant of dissent as Lincoln was. Lincoln is still the only head of state in the world to submit himself to an election during a revolution, during a rebellion, during a Civil War."

Finally, Holzer concludes, there actually were Congressional dissenters during the Civil War who went unprosecuted by Lincoln. "There was absolutely Congressional dissent during the Civil war. There was a Committee on the Conduct of the War that held hearings, complained about the war, issued disobliging reports. They weren't `silenced' by Lincoln.'"

One last thought from Holzer: "Lincoln had his own Murthas."

That's a good one.

Anyway, there it is. Have at it.

The best comment about the first go round of the fake Lincoln quote can be found on Sadly No. It made the point that if you're going to make up a Lincoln quote, you might as well make up a good one, and it did so by coming up with this gem:

I find it additionally amusing that folks like Gaffney choose Lincoln and the Civil War as their analogy of choice, given that most of Gaffney's demographic refers to the Civil War as the "War of Northern Aggression" and worships the mud-stained boots of soldiers and generals who fought to preserve the institution of human torture and slavery in the United States.

And, of course, a key difference between today and 1860 is that Lincoln's big war wasn't a pointless one that he started for reasons that were murky at best.

And, um, another key difference is that he fought the actual enemy. He didn't, for instance, send the bulk of his force to invade Canada.

A third key difference, and to me the most important, was that Lincoln WON his war.

I know, trivial distinctions.

I am left to wonder why well paid journalists are so often unable to state their points without having to resort to quotes from the long dead ? I am sure you can find some ex somebody with name recognition to quote about anything under the sun.

And I thought journalists who were promoted to being "columnists" were given the job because they had great writing skills or were especially clever or incisive in their observations....I guess not.

As others have noted (and as Doris Kearns Goodwin documented in her excellent Lincoln book "Team of Rivals"), Lincoln was an outspoken opponent of his country's prosecution of the Mexican-American war. He felt morally obliged to speak out against it and he paid a heavy price politically. Indeed, years later, he confided to his close friend Stanton his opinion that it was nearly always political suicide for a party to oppose a war. Bottom line - I don't think Lincoln thought he was aiding the enemy when he opposed the Mexican-American war.

Ya gotta read Gaffney's whole article. This man is one of the worst of the worst. He should be making the case for impeaching George Bush for "damaging the Army, upon the existence and vigor of which the life of the nation depends".

Where are Frank Gaffney's speeches to the College Republicans or Young Republicans imploring them enlist because the very "life of the nation" hangs in the balance if we fail to defeat the coming nexus of weapons of mass destruction in the hands of Islamofascists" as he says? These are the kids who blindly support this wretched administration.
Yet as the AP reports three-fourths of those killed in Iraq came from towns where the per capita income was below the national average. More than half came from towns where the percentage of people living in poverty topped the national average. We know they don't come from the ranks of the College Republicans. They don't come from college at all and many won't ever make it there. And if they were Republicans when they entered the service, they sure as hell aren't now.

There is an irony in this type of argument that many do not recognize. People who disagree with the government and advocate overthrow should be treated as enemies. Why then do many conservatives refuse to recognize that the Confederate nation was a treasonous group who should not be viewed as heroes but as villians? Why do they revere the Confederate flag as something to be honored when in fact it is the symbol of those who attempted to overthrow this nation?

Lincoln may have been correct but the people he had in mind were men like Strom Thurmond, Trent Lott, and Jeff Sessions. Conservatives should remember who it was who tried to overthrow the government of this nation by force.

I love how Gaffney says that his fake Lincoln quote might not have been a real quote, but it was a "paraphrase." Of course, it was nothing of the kind, it was Waller's highly tendentious opinion of what Lincoln might have thought. But Gaffney suggests that, well, Lincoln said something pretty close, even if it wasn't an exact quote. Can't keep a good liar down.

Vallandigham lost the 1862 election, for the Ohio third district House seat, to Robert C. Schenck. Before the Twentieth Amendment a new Congress was seated on March 4th and Vallandigham wasn't arrested until May 5th. Maybe I am misreading Mr. Gaffney, but shouldn't Gaffney make it a little clearer that Vallandigham was not an active member of Congress?

Furthermore, if the Iraq war were truly central to our very survival as a nation, you'd think Bush, with the aid of Boehner and McConnell would be calling, not for a paltry 22,000 troops, but for a draft and full mobilization. Even after Pearl Harbor and the enormous number of volunteers who enlisted, we needed a draft, as, of course, was needed in the Civil War -- the other war that truly was about our survival.

The Repubs keep saying, "If the Dems are serious, they should defund this war in Iraq." The Dems should retort, "If the Prez is serious that this is a war for our very survival, he should add all the troops he needs, and draft soldiers if necessary."

My letter to the editor at the WaTimes. I think it goes to Tony Blankley. But first a lesson in blogswarming as practiced by the other side.

A couple of weeks ago a military columnist by the name of Arkin at the WaPo had the temerity to suggest that we shouldn't be basing Iraq war support on what soldiers in Iraq think. The gist of his argument was the troops don't set policy and that's good, we don't want a bunch of 20 year old GIs setting policy. This got wide play on wingnut sites and he got hundreds of threats etc. Think Amanda Marcotte x 10. If you want to shut the likes of Gaffney up as they try to make that POS poll a reality and advance the stab in the back meme then bombard the Wa Times not the Horse's Mouth with your responses.

These are the progeny of the wealthy suburbanites who are the remaining supporters of this administration. Their fervent belief in the cause ought to inspire them but as recruiting statistics show it doesn't.

Hogwash. The committee wasn't a gaggle of anti-war clowns, the members were (essentially) the radical wing of the Republican Party who wanted the war prosecuted with the utmost vigor.

In no sense were they dissenting on the issue of the Union fighting the rebels.

Holzer is being disingenuous.

What exactly would bring you to call a bunch of slave owners "liberal"? What sort of policies promoted by the "liberal" agenda would support slave ownership?

It appears to me that anyone who disagrees with you is automatically a "liberal" and is lumped together with anyone else who you happen to disagree with (like perhaps slave owners). So, while I agree with you that slave owners (and traitors) are worthy of our condemnation, I fail to see how that makes them "liberals".

Similarly, you appear to believe that because our current president happens to be a "Republican" that he is in any way similar to Republicans of the Civil War era. I can assure you that this is not the case.

You need to pay better attention to the actual policies and statements related to the issues and depend less on the labels ("liberal", "
Republican", etc.)that are used to confuse you. Think for yourself.
