A Sixth Paper Drops Ann Coulter

I just got off the phone with Billy Liggett, the editor of the Sanford Herald, in central North Carolina. He confirmed to me that his paper has decided to chuck Ann Coulter in the wake of her "faggot" comment.

"We typically ran her in our Sunday op-ed," Liggett says. "This Sunday, we are not going to run her, and we'll explain the decision in an editorial that day." Liggett -- who says his paper has a circulation of 10,000 to 12,000 -- tells me he received 834 emails today asking the paper to drop her. That brings our count to six papers who've decided they're not obliged to publish the work of someone who makes a healthy living calling people "raghead" and "faggot" and all manner of other sandbox epithets.

"We made the decision before that," Liggett says. "It was something we had talked about prior to her recent remarks. Those were kind of the last straw -- they sealed the deal as far as our decision goes."

Today this blog is emailing every one of the newspapers on the list to see whether they are going to continue carrying Coulter's columns or whether they've decided to drop her. Stay with us.

hmm - he indicates he will not be running her "this sunday" but does that imply she is being dropped altogether or just for one run? sounds like an artful dodge to me.

BTW, I counted that list and it's 44 newspapers long, counting the ones that are now listed as "DROPPED". Not a hundred or so. She'll be down to the Pittsburgh Trib-Review and the weekly Pennysaver any day now.

I'm sure Ann will fire back that only the F@# loving papers dropped her, or those papers were F@#$y anyway.

As far as the Oakland Press goes, it's actually got a decent circulation of several hundred thousand and it's a conservative paper so it's a blow.

On Crooks and Liars blog. There is reported more outrage over other remarks Coulter made. Coulter was caught saying that it is right for abortion doctors to be murdered, and it doesn't even come close to the millions of fetuses that have been murdered in Roe vs. Wade. Keep it coming Ann!

I'm amazed that any respectable paper carries her. Aside from the fact that she's a vile hatemonger, she's also totally incapable of discussing any serious subjects above a the level of a schoolyard bully.

My grandmother lives in Sanford and my mother grew up there. She's the widow of a Baptist minister and let me tell you that this is conservative, small town North Carolina (though my grandmother is an amazingly liberal 90 year southern belle). That publications like the Sanford Herald are dropping Coulter has got to be freaking out her syndicator. This is the bread and butter red belt audience that she depends on and now they are turning on her.

Ann Coulter is the equivalent of a tagger or a vandal. What she does is not 'speech' in any meaningful sense. It is mere incitement and hate-mongering.

thanks for the link to the list--I was astonished to see my "local" paper running her column...I had actually stopped reading it several years ago because of its strongly conserative bent in an community that has since turned considerably more liberal. It just seemed to me to be the "ol' folks" paper, at least in its views. However, seeing it listed as a Coulter carrier encouraged me to write them a polite note saying that, seeing how much they respected conservative viewpoints, they should choose conservative columnists more carefully and not bother with folks like Coulter who lower the level of political discourse.....so far, no answer!

(and my security code was "snake"--how appropriate!)

Hate to even prolong a discussion of this piece of trash, it always strikes me as funny, and many folks don't realize, that s/he is from an extraordinarily wealthy family from an extraordinarily wealthy town (New Canaan) in an extraordinarily wealthy part of the extraordinarily wealthy state of Connecticut.

As of the 2000 census, the median income for a household in the town was $141,788, and the median income for a family was $175,331.

And her "base" is made up of 'no-pot-to-piss-in' southern, rural Duke-Boy types.

Is there some minimum number of papers that she must be carried in before her syndicator drops her. I know the list is probably incomplete, but 44 seems awfully low. At some point it won't be worth it to the syndicator to keep her on. Then her number will go to zero.

The kernel of her appeal is that 30 - 40% of Our Fellow Americans are largely incapable of understanding most topics at a level above that of the schoolyard.

Utahn here as well. rooney's right. The three largest papers have never carried her as far back as I can tell. They cetainly wouldn't touch her now, what with their political star Romney on the rise.

FYI, I heard Hannity said something to the like of "I'll come out to SLC on my own dime to debate Rocky Anderson anytime." He's referring to a quip Rocky made on a local show about Hannity unwillingness to debate an intelligent person (Rocky was scheduled to appear on Hannity and Colmes over the impeachment issue, but was abruptly cancelled).

Hannity then said he'd sell tickets to the "debate" and give the money to charity.

He knows full well the audience would be disproportionently in his favor and therefore be able to "win" simply by having a favorable advantage from the audience. Right outside of SLC proper, it's gets as red as red can be.

This kind of campaign is exactly what right-wingers do when they don't agree with someone. A bunch of blog readers write newspapers Editors of towns they don't live in to demand they drop columns they don't read.

I'm happy when Editors decide to take out a vile person like Coulter and replace them with someone more palatable, but this campaign is about ganging up on papers you don't read because you're mad about something someone said.
