Dem Congressman Rips Washington Post For Helping Land Us In "Stupid, Ill-Advised War"
March 23, 2007 -- 11:58 AM EST // View Comments (1074) // Post a Comment

Oh, man -- this is really a great one. This morning The Washington Post published the latest in a string of dishonest, misleading editorials about the House Dems' Iraq bill.

Today on the floor of the House of Representatives during debate over the bill, Dem Rep. David Obey (Obey!) tore into the Post devastatingly hard. He made the rather compelling case that we shouldn't be listening to the Post's edit page about the bill now given how disastrously wrong their war cheerleading has turned out to be.

Obey hammered the paper for everything from spewing Republican talking points to being partly responsible for getting us stuck in Iraq. When he was done, all that was left was a pile of shredded Hiatt.

View it here:

Here's a partial transcript:

Let me submit to you the problem we have today is not that we didn't listen enough to people like The Washington Post. It's that we listened too much. They endorsed going to war in the first place. They helped drive the drumbeat that drove almost two-thirds of the people in this chamber to vote for that misbegotten, stupid, ill-advised war that has destroyed our influence over a third of the world. So I make no apology if the moral sensibilities of some people on this floor, or the editorial writers of The Washington Post, are offended because they don't like the specific language contained in our benchmarks or in our timelines.

What matters in the end is not what the specific language is. What matters is whether or not we produce a product today that puts pressure on this Administration and sends a message to Iraq, to the Iraqi politicians that we're going to end the permanent long-term dead end babysitting service. That's what we're trying to do. And if The Washington Post is offended about the way we do it, that's just too bad.

That must have felt pretty good. It's about time someone did this.

The Washington Post editorial page is a national disgrace. It has been for years and years. Back in the Watergate days, the Post was worthy of respect. Those days are long gone.

Fred Hiatt is on a mission to turn his editorial domain into the equivalent of the WSJ's: that is, a set of pages divorced from what's reported in the news section.

Quite amusing. Nice to see it, finally. Maybe we can get Broder called out by name at some point.

Now, speaking as someone who actually gave money to the TPM empire this week: can we finally get a link to Horse's Mouth on the main TPM site? It has links to Election Central, TPM Cafe, and Muckraker (and Mickey Kaus!) -- why not Horse's Mouth, too? Or am I an idiot and somehow missing it?

Divorced from the news pages? Would that it were. The funny thing about the WSJ is that for the most part, the news side manages to keep that wall up. I don't think there's ever been such a wall at The Post, going by their typically awful coverage and the fact that they've consigned their few prescient reporters, like Pincus, to the back pages.

Careful! You'll require Howie Klein and firedoglake to re-examine all their favorite assumptions about David Obey the man, his politics, and everything he stands for.

And you know, once those two reach a conclusion about their latest favorite enemy, they really, really hate to go back on that. Because they're never, ever wrong.

But this is great, because David Obey's always been a leading progressive, one prone to tell it like it is.

Whether it's the Washington Post or any other news media, the fact is that the mainstream media LIED about the evidence for attacking Iraq. Nor can that media say differently.

Millions of Americans smelled the rat and there is no excuse for the American media not to have smelled it also.

Sunday morning talk shows are no different.

I wish they'd been as skeptical about the fairy tales this administration was telling before we went in there. We don't have the luxury of nitpicking anymore. Iraq is a catastrophe, bin Laden is still on the loose, terrorist attacks are rising, and our army is approaching the breaking point. The most important thing now is getting our troops out of there and back to protecting the US. If it takes a little pork to make the politics work, then so be it.

I don't know why anyone subscribes to the WAPO, NYT, or so many MSM behemoths anymore.

Of course investigative journalism needs to be done, and most bloggers don't. But the way I see it there are n potential good, trained, motivated journalists in the world, and potential $ to be made from the news business, and the behemoths have swallowed both the journalists and the $ and precious little useful news comes out the other end.

There has to be a more efficient way.

For example, TPM lost a good writer to ABC. Probably he went for the big bucks, or the ABC brand name or such. TPM was crackign big stories all the while he was here. He was a great contributor. TPM still is breakign big stories. What is he doing now?

There is a real problem with the MSM. It just makes hacks of people. It encourages hackitude and mediocrity.

Rep. Obey THANK YOU

My brother-in-law was a Washington Correspondent then he was chief-of-staff for a republican representive and he was not a fan of the Clintons. Right before he died he made the statement that the Washington Post was out to get Clinton. Knowing someone that worked for the Post I ask them if they agreed with that statement. Their only comment was YES.
This was in 1996 several months before the elections. I wonder what he would say now after six years of garbage that the Post, NYT and others have but out.
I just hope the Democrats have the courage to keep up the heat.

Yeah, Obey just got pissed off at some liberal recently -- I do too, all the time, even as I proudly label myself one. But he's definitely an old school liberal Dem.

Between this and the recent Democratic withdrawal from the Fox pit of lies, you can see the relatively newfound influence of smart media criticism and the effects it can have on politicians, if not yet the media itself.

And we all know that The Post wasn't alone in its call to war. Recently, I heard Chris Matthews bemoaning this war and saying "I just wonder who they were listening to in the run-up to the war, because nothing they told us would happen has happened."

And the thought occurred to me: I'll bet they were listening to Hardball and all those other pundit shows, because the people who thought this was was a disaster waiting to happen were not allowed on those shows.

The pundit class deserves what it has sown, but our troops don't.

FDL hates Obey because, among other things, Obey went off on an FDL-fan in a hallway of the Capitol, one who urged him to filibuster a bill in the House. For those who know, this is like telling the pitcher to blitz.

Obey went off on the good-hearted know-nothing, giving him the civics lesson he should have gotten in high school, but with more volume and, frankly, disgust.

Shame the recorders were on. I feel sorry for the little FDL-er.

The Post's responsibility RE Iraq starts in mid-March 1999, when the paper began its endless war against Candidate Gore. Ceci Connolly invented bull-roar about Gore for the next two years, strongly driving the prevailing press narrative (along with the magpies at the NYT). You may recall that this election ended up being decided rather narrowly.

Eureka, Obey has solved my dilemna. I live in Rep. John Kline's(RetiredUSMC I carried the" football" i.e. nuclear codes for Pres. Regan and a transplanted Texan) district. He is finally having a town meeting for his constituents( he usually has them and I get a notice to attend 2 days after the event, guess I must be on the wrong voting list). We have had a lake cabin in Obey's district for the last 20 yrs. guess I'll just have to move my self permanently to our lake cabin in Obey's district. On second thought, maybe I will stay put and wait it out. Our formally pretty red suburban state senate district went blue. In Minnesota we overwhelming returned our State legislature to blue and our Gov. Tim ( I am McCain's waterboy) Pawlenty won by a slim margin.Minnesotans have long memories and they do not liked to be fooled, take that to mind Norm Coleman. We are watching the votes. I grew up in the 7th district of Wisconsin that Obey has represented since 1969, and he's always been one of the most honest and straight-forward politicians out there. And he's also not just any Representative, but is Chairman of the Appropriations Committee, and thus wields a huge amount of influence in the House. I think he's #3 in seniority, also. When he speaks, I'll be the rest of the members are listening.

Isn't part of the problem with the Post the fact that Donald Graham is so weird and dumb? He went to good schools and so forth, so he doesn't seem obviously imbecilic, but then you could say the same about George W. Bush (at times). Question 1: So, tell me, people, does Donald Graham write any of the stupid crap at the Post. I can't believe the Post would be so bad if it wasn't owned by spoiled rich kids like the Grahams who have no conception of what life is like for the vast majority of people, and therefore don't care about a government that helps only the rich in the most fascist way possible. Question 2: But isn't the WSJ the single worst editorial page in the country? When I've read it, it seems to me that their technique is to write an editorial that seems reasonable and balanced, and then they stick the shiv in at the end with a line or two that are completely unjustified, wrong, obscene, strawman-ish, and democrat hating.

The Washington Post today is not even a shadow of the great paper it was when Katherine Graham was the publisher. I had renamed it as Pravda on the Potomac. I canceled my subscription in July 2004 and don't miss it one bit. I do, however, miss the old Washington Post.

And, dare I say that Katherine Graham had balls that Fred Hiatt can only dream of. He is a stenographer and nothing more for the biggest bunch of crooks I have ever seen hold the highest offices of this country. Also, I tend to believe the Bob Woodward who worked with Bernstein died a long time ago; and, the one we see around who still puts out books is actually one of those pod people in The Body Snatchers.

Posted by: Bonnie
Date: March 23, 2007 4:55 PM

Excuse me for spitting on the dead, but my recollection of Katherine Graham was a newspaper owner who undertook an aggressive campaign to bust the unions at the Washington Post in the mid-70s. The Newspaper Guild--Woodward and Bernstein's union--played a fairly cowardly role, all but encouraging its members to cross the line to keep the paper going. Those who don't care about the union movement may revere her; those who do don't.

Washington Post reads like the Wall Street Journal. Their news pages are so so. Their editorial page is neocon.

WP editorial page like the WSJ editorial page is willing to distort, smear, lie, to advance a neocon ideology. The only reason to read them is for a good laugh.

Their op-ed page is not much better. Most of their columnists tilt heavily to the right with a few mild centrist/centre left voices for "balance".

I don't know why people subscribe to the WP. They are banrolling dishonest GOP propagandists like George Will, Charles Krauthammer, Jim Hoagland, Anne Applebaum, Bob Novak, Fred Hiatt......................the list goes on and on.

Instead of paying to read these dishonest hacks they can get intellectually honest opinions on the Internet for free.

"Isn't part of the problem with the Post the fact that Donald Graham is so weird and dumb?"

This is a common misperception.

WP made a right turn in the 80s under his mother. He has simply moved the paper further to the right. My understanding is that it is for business reasons. WP has all kinds of business interests aligned with GOP policies. It is about the money. It is always about the money.

Posted by:
Date: March 23, 2007 5:59 PM

"The Washington Post today is not even a shadow of the great paper it was when Katherine Graham was the publisher."

Again, this is not true. It was Mrs Graham who moved the paper to the right. Fred Hiatt's editorials are not that different from Meg Greenfield's, who was hired by Mrs Graham.

People are forgetting that WP was very kind to Reagan and Mrs Graham was best friends with Nancy.

WP has been moving to the right since the 80s. Its editorial page is now fully neocon.

Posted by:
Date: March 23, 2007 6:02 PM

The question now becomes what the WP will do: realize what a gang of destructive fucks they have been and are, go on a counter-attack, or continue playing chickenshit, passive-aggressive games against Democrats, both in its features and on its editorial pages. The last, almost certainly. And then the Dems are going to have to start amplifying Obey's long, long overdue message.

Kitt @ 04:19 PM
"FDL posted the same Obey youtube...And.. Jane Hamsher, praised Obey for what he said about the Washington Post,"

No she didn't. She pointedly didn't. There are no words of praise in her text. She wrote "more like this, please." She wrote, "move over, Atrios." But in no way did she explicitly praise Dave Obey. Not implicitly, really, either.

FDL ALSO posted the video of Obey being accosted by Tina Richards. And laid into him good, as though he were Joe Lieberman. Rather than the antithesis.

Snap judgments made from a position of ignorance just aren't going to win any arguments--let alone allies.

This is hardly the first speech in which Obey takes Bush, the Repubs, or the press to task. What kind of self- or political-awareness could Hamsher and Klein have? I've known who Chris Shays & Hoekstra & Porter Goss are--AND know their politics. So where has fdl been? Just b/c they hadn't heard of him doesn't mean he's an enemy. Obey's a fierce, passionate, and righteous guy. And NONE of them dared ambush Lieberman in the halls of Congress. Must be ok for Obey, though.

And IT IS THE Point that Klein & FDL knew nothing about Obey, the man, his history, or his politics--before slamming him. And Howie Klein DID consciously slime Dave Obey, and lied to do it. They did no research.

"So, I would easily conclude that your assessment that FDL "hates Obey" is bunk."

You'd easily be wrong. They may have been supplied with human charity, in the form of a clue, and revised their position. But far be it from them to acknowledge their mistake.

Same pattern with Matt Cooper: he's a friend, now; he thinks Jack Black will play him in the movie--see, he's funny! So committing precisely the same egregious lies and journalistic frauds perpetrated by Judith Miller don't matter to fdl. Cooper was and is Rove's poodle. Had it not been for Patrick Fitzgerald, he still would be.

Ask your friends to do it also.

Cancel a subscription or twelve over a steamy pile of propoganga. Heck, sign up for WSJ or the Washington Post - Check the bill me box - pick an article or op-ed - express displeasure and cancel the rag. Pocket-books are prime in modern day press.

Within a year or so the universe will shift. That's what the wingers did - It is time to take the press back.

But once you've tripped over the wires running from your video card to your TV going for a piss at 4am, and chip a tooth when your mouth hits the arm of a chair on the way down, you get neat."

"I had a stupid boss once that after I had wired everything with color coded patch cables came through the server room and went nuts because he did not want different colored or lengths of cables. I had to redo it all with 6 foot blue cables. I left soon after.

Reagan chased off the true conservatives in the GOP and replaced them with bible-toting hypocrites with drug habits and gay prostitute arrangements.

News flash, it's not those who are against the Iraq War who are the extremists. The neocons need to read some history and the Art of War.
