Gay Man Implores Hometown Paper He Delivered As Boy To Drop Coulter
March 10, 2007 -- 01:33 PM EST // View Comments (305) // Post a Comment

TPM Reader EF has written in to tell us he's a gay man living in New York who was dismayed to discover the other day that the hometown paper he delivered as a boy -- the Siskiyou Daily News in rural northern California -- is carrying Ann Coulter's column.

He has now written a letter to the paper's managing editor, Deborra Clayton, pleading with her to drop Coulter. I'm reprinting much of his letter here, because it says a good deal about what this whole thing's about.

Dear Deborra:

We've never met, but I was born and raised in Siskiyou County. While I was in elementary school, I was a Siskiyou Daily News delivery boy for several years. My route encompassed the town of Weed. Some of my fondest childhood memories are of that paper route – the elderly Italian immigrants who would give me extra tips when it was snowing, and the staff at the town's only law firm who always had an ice-cold soda in the refrigerator to get me through the rest of the route in the brutal summer months...

Today, I saw a listing of newspapers that run Ann Coulter’s opinion column – and was surprised to see the Siskiyou Daily News on the list. That’s why I’m writing to you, and I hope you’ll take a moment to hear me out.

I am a gay man with a very full and rewarding life. I share a home with my partner in New York City, and I have a job that I love. I get back to California – and to Siskiyou County – regularly, but not often enough. Years after my days as a paper boy, when I lived in Sacramento, other gay people would express sympathy that I had grown up in Siskiyou County. Because it is so rural, and fairly conservative, people assumed I must have faced great hostility.

My experience was quite the opposite...Quite simply, Siskiyou County was my home, and people who lived there had known me from the day I came into the world.

In the years since, like many gay people, I have encountered occasional discomfort, disdain or subtle discrimination...Such experiences are to be expected, I think, and I believe they come from a smaller and smaller number of people.

But I don’t think hostility like this has a place in our newspapers today – and I certainly don’t think it belongs in the newspaper that I hand-delivered every day with such pride...I can’t imagine delivering a Siskiyou Daily News edition with Ann Coulter’s column in it, and I can’t imagine any of the customers on my route wanting to read the column.

Thank you for taking the time to read my letter, and for your careful consideration.

Sincerely,

EF

Sums it up.

That about sums it up. Selling hate or selling newspapers--it's a choice.

This is a powerful letter. I hope that the paper responds by dropping that awful woman's hate-filled rants. Let's see if a polite and reasoned appeal bears fruit. I am prepared for a surprise. So far threats to cancel subscriptions, complaint to advertiser etc have produced results. Nothing like a pocket book issue to get the papers going.

Superb letter, wonderfully argued. I hope the publishers of the newspaper heed it and drop the repellent Ms Coulter's self-serving screeds.

Carrying a conservative columnist is one thing, carrying Coulter is quite another.

That about sums it up. Selling hate or selling newspapers--it's a choice.

I don't see it that way at all, and I doubt very much that the publishers who choose to run Cloulter's columns see it that way either. Quite the opposite, in fact. The more disingenuous ones are now professing surprise at Coulter, but everyone has known what she was about for a decade at least, and they winked and chuckled about it: www.time.com/time/magazine/article/0,9171,1050304,00.html

The difference is that this time she hit a reasonably influential group that actually fights back, which represents a threat to the profits of these organizations. Until that point, they were happy to sell newspapers by selling hate, and they'll be happy to do it again in the future as soon as they find the "right" hate merchant to do it. Most of them are perfectly content to leave Coulter in place, and are actually pleased about this as the controversy stokes readership: exactly why they ran her column in the first place.

What a marvelous letter. Plz let us know its results; am betting this might give editor ammo if she has been on the fence on whether to keep running Miss Coulter's, um, workproduct.

There are plenty of hateful, ignorant female columnists to replace her. Charen and Jesse's handpuppet are but two.

One can assume that at minimum the 3 out of 10 who call themselves Republicans cannot see what the fuss is about. About half of any populace anywhere in the world would be happy to live under authoritarian rule that persecutes -- you name it -- gays, liberals, unionists, non-Christians.

And, as someone already pointed out, if this harpy was replaced in toto tomorrow, someone like her would take her place.

These suburban papers in particular have learned that the must throw red meat to that 3/10 of their readership to retain already declining circulation levels. They'll do this as a business decision, if for no other reason. Most would run a column by Charlie Manson if it helped sell papers.

Our local paper for example carries NO liberal columnists on its editorial pages and will throw in a Coulter or Goldberg every other day or so with the view from the parallel universe on which these hate mongers dwelleth.

So it's gratyfiying to see a Coulter given the door, but our nation is full of her replacements.
What's a mother to do? Keep screaming. Keep getting them fired. It does keep them off balance. It like confronting the schoolyard bully. The fact that you fought back will keep him away, even if he gave you a bloody nose.
Me? No, I'm not gay, but have a close relative is and I abhor the persecution of persons seen as "different".

I always find it a deliciious irony that a woman in particular would persecute gays, given the deplorable treatment women have recieved historically and in sectors of our society even today.

i liked the letter, and applaud the persont that wrote it, but, in terms of persuasiveness, i thought it fell apart in the end -- mostly because the author's primary point seemed to be that he found Coulter offensive. There are compelling reasons to shun hate speech, and those who practice it, from the public sphere, but this letter doesn't directly address them. It is important to be attentive to the subtleties of such debates because the "it offends me and should be silenced" argument is a dangerous one for all involved.

perhaps the paper ought to have "EF" write a column to replace Coulter.

I thought it was a fine letter, but having been a carrier for a conservative paper thru my high school and part of my college years, I have lived to experience the subtle support it continues to give to conservative Republicans by simply ignoring decent liberal viewpoints...and regarding carriers, they are no longer students, but many are teachers, college graduates who can't find jobs, and are not employees, but merely outsouced labor that gets no benefits.
It is beginning to appear that being polite and having decency in oppostion to these folks is simply not going to work. The insurgents in Iraq understand that already, the protesters in Brazil understand that..confrontation to rid this country of the pestilence of Coulter, Limbaugh, et al. is about all that is left.

My wife is from Siskiyou County (we live in NYC now, too!) and she definitely relates.

Posted by: Steve
Date: March 10, 2007 06:15 PM

Interesting, I am a gay man too. Born and raised in NY, now living in Florida, via Washington, DC.

Prior to Ann's comments, she mentioned how she believed that on many (if not most) issues, gays and lesbians "belong" on the conservative side, the republican side if you will.

Then she tied Edwards to a bit of current commentary, the nonsense about going into therapy for using a word...

And now, because people today are devoid of context while filled with their "victim status" we now have to remove Ann Coulter from view?? Nobody can deliver newspapers anymore? Nobody read them -- not if she's in there??

Where is the outcry from my "gay brothers" to have the actor dropped who used the word in the first place?? Where is the outcry from my gay and lesbian kin that the show has to be removed from our sight?? Hell, why stop there?? How can families gather in front of the tube anymore, when that network can find it's way into homes?

No outcry from my "kin," because usually the vocal side of my "kin" is the left side of the family. No outcry about the actor, because the actor was black and so he has victim status. And the actor has likely paid his dues by attending some prior Democrat cause / event.

If Ann was a leftist and said what she said about a Republican or conservative, my "kin" would be cheering her on. As they cheer on those on the left who said and say far worse -- all the time. This is politics and it's a form of the tragic politics we engage in today.

The letter writer couldn't imagine delivering the paper today, because of Ann's column?? Doubtful, more likely he couldn't imagine delivering the paper today because he's a grown man (at least in age...), but how could you get the truthful version of that letter printed in a paper??

And worse than the gay liberals, Democrats, leftists, milking this non-issue, are the straight liberals, Democrats and leftists who have to feel the "gay pain" here.

Sorry, I delivered papers too, then I grew up. I am living with my partner and have for many years. And I like Ann, and enjoy having at least one bomb-thrower on my side of the political divide. No, you can't have them all...

Ken,

If Coulter would have apologized I'm sure gay people would have forgiven her and this would have been forgotten by now. Instead she chose to rub salt in the wound. She brought this on herself. Additionally, many, many conservatives have shunned her as well over this - are they "leftists" too?

That was such a lovely letter. Perhaps if the editor already had misgivings she would be tipped over the edge by such a sweet and heartfelt request. But, truthfully, he should have mentioned all the other people this woman has insulted for years with her vile comments.

Mr. Whiteside:

While I do appreciate your viewpoint about the necessity for a diversity of public opinion, you and your fellow conservatives no more hold a monopoly on truth than I do. I daresay that most mature-minded people -- regardless of political persuasion or sexual orientation -- don't much care for such "bomb-throwers", whose mean-spirited rhetoric is food for thought only to the foolish, the ignorant and the simple-minded.

Ann Coulter has few equals in sheer vitriole and spite, and her participation in any public dialogue pretty much forecloses any meaningful possibility of having a rational discussion about the issues at hand.

I'm very sorry that you simply can't see that, especially as a gay man, and will continue to support her as a conservative mouthpiece.

I will close by noting a universal law of physics that is applicable to most every occasion: For every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction.

I would respectfully suggest that you and your fellow conservatives consider that when pondering your next response to liberal initiatives, lest "bomb-throwers" like Ms. Coulter render your thoughts and opinions irrelevant for lack of an appreciative audience, save for yourselves.

I live in Siskiyou County. Unfortunately, the Siskiyou Daily News is conservative to the extreme. The local Democratic Party paid to have the Molly Ivans column published in that newspaper, just to have a contrasting view represented. I'm sure that no one had to do that for the Anne Coulter pieces. I wish EF well, nice to know our "children" are out and about in the real world.

Sums it up with simple, direct eloquence. I cannot imagine a more powerful heartland American (the heartland is every small town in America) argument than this one. Perhaps the most damning thing about Ann Coulter is that I suspect she could read this and still feel no shame for what she did. But I don't expect her to, and who she is or what she will continue to say aren't the issue. The issue is how we as a society react to what she said, where she said it, and who applauded. It is proper for this newspaper to drop her column, not for the purpose of censoring public debate, but rather to say that we have no interest in such hatemongering. Essentially, we need to just turn a deaf ear to her. She has nothing to say worth hearing, and not because she is a conservative, which I don't think she is. I have dearly beloved lifelong conservative relatives, and they simply do not spew or embrace such unseemly discourse, or to put it in language I grew up with, we just don't talk (or think) like that, which is what I heard when, as a child, I said such things. Perhaps Ann Coulter was never required to grow up.

Nice straw man you got there, Ken.

In case electrons andd photons don't reach your cave, there WAS an outcry. That's why the actor, who did NOT have a decades-long history of being a bigot, soon saw his error and apologized.

"As they cheer on those on the left who said and say far worse -- all the time."

Damn, that's a fine grade of bullsh*t you've got there, Ken! Now, please name for me a few of the leftist commentors and their comments that were as insensitive as Coulter's. It should be a simple task, since it happens "all the time".

Remember though, the comments have to be worse than "...invade their countries, kill their leaders, and convert them to [a different religion]. And "worse" than meaning it "now more than ever".

Worse than saying about the 9/11 widows known as the "Jersey Girls", "I’ve never seen people enjoying their husbands’ deaths so much."

Worse than "My only regret with Timothy McVeigh is he did not go to the New York Times building." Bonus points if the "worse" comment also includes references to destroying the commenter's employer.

Worse than suggesting, "We need somebody to put rat poisoning in Justice Stevens's creme brulee."

C'mon, Ken! You can do it! (And when you can't, you can STFU until you think out your next comment a bit further.)

When Molly passed a few weeks ago, the outpouring of compassion and grief was large and sincere here in Austin.

I neither know nor care where Coulter lives, but when it's her time to go, the guest book will probably be a one-pager.

Posted by: Chipmaker

I see Bartcopfan has never heard of Louis Farrakhan.

These false Jews promote the filth of Hollywood that is seeding the American people and the people of the world and bringing you down in moral strength. … It’s the wicked Jews, false Jews that make it a crime for you to preach the word of God, then they call you homophobic.

Meanwhile, the sound for calling Jews these names and for stating that homosexuals were "filthy" was simple -- applause. But then again, Farrakhan was speaking in Chicago to the black community, a group that is staunchly liberal, staunchly homophobic, and anti-Semitic -- but also imperative to Democrat power.

Meanwhile, the sound from leftist gays, HRC, NGLTF, et al., despite Farrakhan calling gays "filthy" AND having a long and storied history of doing so?

Crickets.

Of course, we know why; Democrat power politics are at stake, and gays rank WAY low on that totem pole. The queers can sit there and take it if Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would get pissed off, and especially if Barack Obama, who represents the area and is already under suspicion of not being black enough, would have to publicly contradict Farrakhan and thus destroy his base of support.

It's impossible to deny that this is hate speech.

The question is, why was it somehow more acceptable for her to call Arabs "ragheads"? I didn't see any newspaper cancellations then. That, too, is hate speech. But hating Arabs seems to be in fashion these days.

Let me get this STRAIGHT, you're drawing comparisons of Louis Farrakhan to Anne Coulter. Are you messed or what? Farrakhan has a commitment to his religion, as Pat Robertson, Jimmy Swaggert and all those FUped jerks do for your party. It hardly compares to what comes out of Coulters mouth when she's not frothing from it. Does Pat Robertson think you're a clean man? does he accept you as a gay man?
Hhmmmm.....

Now let’s consider Coulter, Ann, That smiling, leggy harridan; To To her it’s not just right or wrong: If you’re not Right, you’re traitor’s spawn .

No doubts for her! She is unbowed And stubborn facts are not allowed;
A liberal is Satan’s child And disagreement drives her wild.

For some it is a monthly curse
But Coulter’s got it bad to worse Is this a case where more is less... A plague of non-stop PMS ?

So when it's clear that she’s gone mad At last, I would be very glad That, ere her psyche’s all unmade,
Good karma strikes and she gets laid.

The comparison to Farrakhan is flawed. Both the rank and file liberals and higher-ups have repeated condemned Farrakhan's hate remarks. And let's not forget that Coulter's remarks drew laughter and applause. And no apologies from the giant powerhouse PAC that presented the forum. They aren't a fringe group, like Farrakhan. They are movers and shakers in the Republican party.

Come on, some of you don't think your fellow lefties have a mouth?? A foul mouth??

Here's some reading material for a quiet peaceful Sunday afternoon. And considering society stole an hour's worth of sleep from you today, you can read about the "evil ones" who stole the rest from you...

http://www.amazon.com/Cheney-Ashcroft-Donald-Rumsfeld-Reader/dp/1560256206

Remember I said I moved to FL via DC... I spent a few years working on the Hill. I am slightly familiar with the "active leftist." The vocal kin of "my" community. I've witnessed the protests and I know it's not all hemp clothing, planting flowers and 'peace in our time' from you people. In fact those are about the only things missing from you people...

Side note: I lost a friend on 911, she was on the AA77. I was in the city that day and only found out later the smoke and the smell was partly her... I remember taking a look at one of the first antiwar protests back then. Over Afghanistan not Iraq. And witnessed another in Germany barely a month after the 911 attacks.

I don't know who you people think you're kidding with this nonsense that the left (that's YOU) don't engage in "hate speech." That you supported the "war on terror" when it was Afghanistan, but not Iraq... And all the other loads of crap you try to sell.

But like I said, some of us know better. We are clued into you a bit more than you'd like. And just because you forget anything you feel like and ignore what you like, it doesn't mean the rest of us do.

Any credibility you might have had on this issue died when most of you ignored the bomb throwers on your side. And on topic, anyone know how old this guy is? The one that couldn't deliver the newspaper anymore?? The one that can no longer look at his childhood the same way?? The one who had his cherished memories tramped on by the "evil" Ann Coulter?? Anyone care to find out what "treats" he actually delivered??

Could it be that he's old enough to have carried opinions that opposed giving younger people the right to vote?? Could he have delivered editorials opposed to The Equal Rights Amendment?? Or even equal rights period??? Was he the age to have delivered papers with opinions about the "gay disease?"

Is it possible that he actually delivered trash back then as a kid and helped to cement biased opinion in that Rockwell town?? Is it possible that today's rag is actually a better paper than it was back then??

Likely, but why get into that when you had the violins out the moment you heard a gay man wrote to a paper about Coulter.

Yeah I know this is your backyard. It's a left leaning blog with fellow travelers and so I didn't expect much. However, your side still can surprise me at times. You keep making me redefine the word "detached."

I believe, as I am quite sure others have -- I didn't read through all 34 comments, but I'd be willing to bet others posted the suggestion I make here: the subject newspaper could do worse than to hire the former paper delvery boy as a columnist. Yes. Ann implying that John Edwards was a "faggot". No one really cares. Wewho think that overall Ann Coulter is a bitch are just happy she made a comment that brings her offensivness into a more sacred arena of offense. Mil it all you want. I for one would rather see her roasted for the calls to execute and blow-up reporters, justices and citizens.

Although she's just doing her job, making money off of contreversy. I am glad to see her floundering a bit in this particular debacle and losing a few publications.

Anyway, have fun ;-)

Reading ANYTHING that is from Ann Coulter has always reminded me the unpleasant experience of conversing with someone across a table who has a noticeable case of halitosis.

Her nastiness towards the 9/11 widows, in my opinion, should have triggered a wholesale dis-continuation of her junk by ALL newspapers.

Ann Coulter wasn't calling Edwards a faggot. Her comments were something like this: "You now have to go into rehab if you use the faggot." She was referring to Isiah Washington and his comment to hiw co-worker on the Grey's Anatomy set. Get your facts straight. Why is it okay for the liberals to call President Bush a Nazi and every other name in the book but one peep out of conservatives and you can't take the heat. GROW-UP! Quit being a victim for something that wasn't said to you!
