Howard Kurtz Publicizes Malkin's Efforts To Tar Left -- Even Though He Thinks They're "Absurd"
March 01, 2007 -- 11:58 AM EST // View Comments (841) // Post a Comment
This is a good one. Washington Post columnist Howard Kurtz today gives top billing to Michelle Malkin's highlighting of a few insane comments on Huffington Post about the Dick Cheney assassination attempt. At the top of his column, Kurtz writes:
The comments appeared on the Huffington Post, which, to its credit, took them down. But some were preserved by Michelle Malkin, and I reproduce them here...Says Malkin: "Whatever your partisan leanings, an attack planned on the Vice President of the United States is an attack on America. Some of our fellow Americans, however, can't put their sneering hatred of the White House aside."
After giving Malkin's efforts all this publicity, however, Kurtz goes on to say way down in his column:
I would agree that it's absurd to view these assassination fantasies as anything other than the rantings of the fringe, and that they shouldn't be used to tar an entire ideology. All I'm saying is that it's really sad that some loons feel this way, and that the Internet culture, however briefly, gives them a megaphone.
But Howard -- using these comments to "tar an entire ideology" is exactly what Malkin is doing here, and you know it. But you publicized her efforts, anyway. In the Malkin post you link to, she approvingly quotes a description of these loony comments as "left-wing patriotism." And she also approvingly quotes this:
"This kind of sick, twisted thinking is everywhere in the “progressive” blogosphere...And it’s even sicker than it appears at first glance, because many of these freaks want to see Cheney dead so that he can’t become president if someone assassinates President Bush."
I'm not at all defending those HuffPo comments -- they're disgusting, of course. But still, Kurtz knows exactly what Malkin is up to here. She's doing the very thing he said was "absurd" -- but he went ahead and publicized her efforts, anyway, while ignoring their true nature.
Yes, Kurtz wrote that tarring an ideology with a few vile comments is an absurd tactic in general -- without noting that this is exactly what Malkin is doing. Why tiptoe around the truly vile nature of this woman? Is the prospect of being targeted by her readership of pod-people really all that frightening?
Relatedly, how about a serious takeout on all the vile, bigoted, bloodthirsty comments you see at winger sites like Little Green Footballs? The other day, hapless wingnut Charles Johnson put up a post at LGF which contained a photo of leaders from Iran and Syria under the title: "Definition of a Target-Rich Environment." Some of the comments: "Kill them. Now." "If only it were so." "Satan aka Allah is in that room." "I smell...felafel farts." None of those comments has been removed -- unlike the ones at Huffington Post, which were taken down.
Yes, yes, I know, it's not a perfect parallel, because those leaders constitute the "enemy" while Cheney is our Veep. But still, this sort of violence and bigotry is everywhere in wingnut comment sections -- and the comments are often directed at Americans. When is the last time Kurtz devoted the lead of his column to that?

Update: More from Glenn Greenwald: "Why would Kurtz so prominently tout and condemn the meaningless and unrepresentative remarks of 200 or so anonymous blog comments, while ignoring the equally perverse behavior and ideas of some of his best-est friends on television...?"

One should remember that both sides supply megaphones to their friendlies. One should also remember that The right calls for death much more often then the left. For folks like...oh...NY TImes reporters for instance? They also created and routinely cheer for an unnecessary war that has killed tens of thousands of innocents around the globe. Waged for profit.
Hmmm...

And I bet from 1992-present, no member of the unhinged right has ever contemplated the assassination of or fantasized about the death of, say, Bill Clinton, certain Supreme Court justices, etc. etc. etc.
Howie Kurtz--blow me.
Posted by: bubbaDate: March 1, 2007 12:17 PM
Has Howie *ever* publicized the right wing hate fest that goes on in talk radio *every* single hour of every single day of every single month of every single year?
What will it take to disenthrall the idiots in the corporate media of the right wind hate spewers?
Posted by: Radha KrishnanDate: March 1, 2007 12:22 PM
How is it they were able to "preserve" those comments so quickly? My guess is they were written by their own interns, or paid staff. In fact I bet most of that kind if stuff is written by trolls. It's like digital grafitti, there's no way to detemine the actual source, and for Howard Kurtz to give it any credence at all says more about him than it does about liberal blogs. He's nothing but a partisan hack.

I remember a Clinton-era bumper sticker that read, "Impeach, hell! Hang 'em both!" referring to Billary, of course. The dork driving his Wisconson plated suv looked pretty smug.
I'm sure Howie would consider this guy a plucky midwestern conservative, a true hero of the heartland.
When the beltway press has a script, it's their story and their stickin' to it!

the felafel farts comment is pretty funny....even if they spelled it wrong
Posted by: ghostDate: March 1, 2007 12:28 PM
I do not believe in the death penalty and do now wish death on anyone. But explain to me please why it is vile for a few people on a left-wing blog to hope for the death of a man they consider to be a mass murderer (Dick Cheney) while it's as American as apple pie for those on the right to regularly applaud the death (by execution or bombing or whatever) of those they consider to be mass murderers.
Posted by: TomTDate: March 1, 2007 12:30 PM
Serious question. Why is it so shocking and offensive that people would wish bad things on Cheney? Seriously. I keep getting told it's disgusting, but why?
Cheney's mesopotamian adventure has killed how many? He now is angling towards blowing up alot of people in Iran. I in no way encourage anybody doing something to Cheney, which would be illegal and wrong (Yes, Secret Service, please read this part), but joking about a near death experience of five deferment Dick, who has helped unleash a whole bunch of death and destruction on this world isn't really that shocking is it?
Posted by: trifectaDate: March 1, 2007 12:31 PM
You are a partisan hack if:
The silly postings on a blogsite by members of party X, are, by definition, an indictment of all members of Part X, while the silly postings of by a member of Party Y, are, by defintion, specific and isolated to that one person and you would consider it unfair to think otherwise.
Michelle Malkin is a partisan hack.
And funny how SHE doesn't allow comments on her site.
Posted by: RobertDate: March 1, 2007 12:34 PM
Actually, Kurtz has addressed the hate-fest that is AM radio. He gave it a brilliant whitewash awhile back with a blowjob piece on Rush Limbaugh, in which he firmly refuted assertions that Big Pharma is a raving hatemonger and pronounced him perfectly mainstream, if not downright cuddly.
Posted by: Septic TankDate: March 1, 2007 12:36 PM
Michelle Malkin. Doesn't she wish she had something of significance to say.
You don't have to be a blind conservative not to see it, just an ignorant one to deny it.

The comment I found most interesting was this: "All I'm saying is that it's really sad that some loons feel this way, and that the Internet culture, however briefly, gives them a megaphone." Except that's the great thing about the Internet. The idea that a greater number of people can join the dialogue is a good thing as far as I am concerned. And only a pedantic fool would bemoan how that's great but for the few loons. Its part of the bargain but all in all the ability for more people to participate is a good thing.
Posted by: whoDate: March 1, 2007 12:38 PM
On the left, the occasional commentor says something appropriate. On the right, the bloggers themselves call for the imprisonment, torture, and execution of people they disagree with all the time.
But Howie loves rightwing bloggers. So he won't talk about that.
Posted by: owenzDate: March 1, 2007 12:42 PM
According to Kurtz, it's "vile" to wish misfortune on one of the guys who got us into a war we shouldn't be fighting. Why? Because he cheated his way into office, and he therefore deserves our respect and admiration. A guy who's funneled possibly hundreds of billions of dollars to his cronies, and who has attacked our Constitution and our nation's laws for six years straight.
It's OK to wish ill or even death on Saddam or Ahmadinejad--they're enemies of our democracy. But we should be nice to Cheney because he's attacking our democracy through "proper channels". He's on our side. He's one of the "good guys". All hail Dick Cheney.
Howard Kurtz is part of the problem.

And this comes less than 2 weeks after Whorard Kurtz' puff piece on Malkin in the WaPo Style section.
And there's this little gem from a WaPo online forum on Tuesday:
Anonymous: Michelle Malkin has been loud, rude and wrong on just about any topic she has ever opined upon. Any chance you will ever profile any of the bloggers who have been serious, thoughtful and correct? Also, as the right-wing already dominates AM talk radio, cable news and other media, right-wing bloggers are seemingly marginalized. In contrast, real liberal points of view (Krugman and Dionne excepted) mostly are confined to the Internet. It seems as if these "new" voices are a far more interesting phenomena.Posted by: RTwashingtonpost.com: Michelle Malkin's Conservative Fight Has Others Coming Out Swinging (Post, Feb. 16)
Howard Kurtz: Well, let's see, I've already done profiles of Jeff Jarvis and Andrew Sullivan and written extensively about bloggers on both the left and the right.

Maybe the MSM continue to demonize Left-wing bloggers because right-wing bloggers don't represent a threat to them. One would be required to know and write English presumably, and use reason, to be a journalist.
The fact that Kurtz uses a hate merchant like Malkin from which to launch his latest assault on US citizens armed with computers and internets connections takes irony to a new level. People like Malkin make a living from hating Liberals. Does Kurtz think it is OK for Cheney to go around calling half the country terrorist sympathizers? If not why doesn't he say something about that? It's too bad the compliant and impotent MSM give people like Cheney a megaphone through which to spread his hate.
There is a group on the Huffington Post who continually make anti-Semitic remarks as well, which people like Malkin jump on oh so conveniently. How do we know these are not Right-wing plants trying to give the Left a bad name? Would that thought ever cross Kurtz's journalistic mind or like the rest of the MSM is he just happy to get on the anti-Blogosphere band wagon and leave it at that.

Am I the only person who laughed out loud at those comments about Dick Cheney.
Perhaps, it's insensitive and socially incorrect, but the comment about "Dr. Evil" reminded me of Austin Powers, and I cracked up. (There is a slight resemblance b/t the two.)
I was expecting the comments to be much worse. I thought the ones in Howard's column were actually rather good-natured.

I do happen to think posting a death-wish for the VPOTUS is beyond the pale.
Wishing him a fair trial is, however, patriotic.

What a stupid comment.
I think it's sad the internet culture gives this moron a megaphone. Through the internet, this idiot is "wasting my beautiful mind"(tm) with his worthless "commentary".

Kurtz's wife is a GOP operative. Kurtz is a GOP mouthpiece disguised as a "media analyst."
Anyone who will seriously defend the ravings of a Rush Limbaugh or Michelle Malkin is, at best, intellectually dishonest. At worst, he's a journalistic whore.

Does anyone know why comments are not allowed on Mr Kurtz columns? This is about as low as I have seen him go and he has been low before. His assertion that he finds it absurd to use the comments to paint the whole while at the same time does it himself shows how blind some people can be.

I blame TV for giving Kurtz a platform from which to spread his vile propaganda.

Give Malkin her due. She gives us the best current example of Kevins Law about comment trolling.
Posted by: Common SenseDate: March 1, 2007 01:15 PM
I don't remember Howard Kurtz being outraged over Malkin going on TV in 2004 and accusing John Kerry of shooting himself in the leg to wing a medal.
Kurtz is such a shill for the radical right in this country.

An even better contrast than anonymous commenters at LGF is major GOP pundits putting their own names to death wishes, perhaps most notably Ann Coulter though she is far from unique. Ariana's round up on her:
"The same woman who said "We need somebody to put rat poison in Justice Steven's crème brulee," questioned whether it was more appropriate "to impeach or assassinate" Bill Clinton, suggested New York Times staffers be "executed," and titled a column on Lincoln Chafee, "They Shot the Wrong Lincoln." And she did so proudly, openly, and in her own name -- not in an anonymous comment."

Kurtz once again encouraging a dangerous mentality of "it doesn't matter if you're right or wrong, it only matters that you say it LOUD."
And people wonder why the media in this country has gone to hell. It's not journalism anymore; it's become entertainment, and poorly done at that.
Posted by: QuintusDate: March 1, 2007 01:18 PM
Justin,
I sort of think of Cheney as a hybrid, spawned from the unnatural and thoroughly evil coupling of Dr. Evil and Danny DeVito's Penguin character.
Posted by: bubbaDate: March 1, 2007 01:22 PM
Howard Kurtz is wed to the right wing -- it's in his personality. Yes, his wife is a well-connected and aggressive Red Meat Republican gunslinger, but Kurtz has found a comfortable home on the right side of the universe, as has Candy Crowley and other media "heavy-weights." What's truly galling is his poorly-executed attempts at guile, his fondness for seeming to be reasonable. As the immortal bard, Bill Shakespeare said, "One may smile, and smile, and be a villain."
Date: March 1, 2007 01:24 PM
Thanks, JohnL. I didn't know that Kurtz's second (and current) wife, Sheri Annis, is a Republican activist and commentator. Good to know. For details see Google or:

There's fringe, and then there's fringe. On one fringe, you have "gee, too bad they missed". On the other, you have people - people who are not anonymous commenters on blogs, BTW (and for all we know the HuffPo posts were planted by Malkin's flying monkeys) - but people who actively and openly advocate assassinating a sitting member of the United States Supreme Court by poisoning his dessert.
Enough of the false equivalence. The shriekers of the Right - Malkin prominently among them - have no peers on the Left to match their murderous bleatings.

And he doesn't mention another "compassionate conservative" nicknamed Sock who threatened Stephanie Miller and Cindy Sheehan stating something on the lines of " sticking something up their pie hole to shut them up".
Plus he neglected to mention anyone can post a comment. I could be Ed Meese and who would know it?

To me, this just further represents the fascist-ization of the American right wing, as they consider attacks on Cheney and Bush as attacks on the state or attacks on the "sovereign."
Thus, any sort of criticism of them is thrust into a de facto attack on the U.S. itself. Well, neither Bush nor Cheney is "the state;" neither is "America;" and neither is "the sovereign."
And if Cheney had been killed in Afghanistan I would not have shed one solitary tear for him. Why should I? He is greed and evil personified. Would it have been *bad*? Yeah, I guess, in the sense that summarily killing people is *bad*.
I guess I would feel badly for his daughter, who is a lesbian.

So how does Howie feel abou tarring conservatives with the musings of Glenn Beck?
From the May 17 broadcast of The Glenn Beck Program:
BECK: Hang on, let me just tell you what I'm thinking. I'm thinking about killing Michael Moore, and I'm wondering if I could kill him myself, or if I would need to hire somebody to do it. No, I think I could."
Maybe he would protest that Michael Moore is not a close enough parallel to a sitting VP.
Fair enough. I'll see your Veep and raise you 1 POTUS:
"In this recurring nightmare of a presidency, we have a national debate about whether he "did it," even though all sentient people know he did. Otherwise there would be debates only about whether to impeach or assassinate."

There is NO PROOF that this was an attack on the Vice President. None. This was an attack, as there are everyday there. The VP was there, but there is no indication he was a target (or even that they knew he was there beforehand).

How do we even know that the people making these comments are "liberals" ... and it's not just Michelle Malkin building quotes for her column?
My point is that anyone who takes quotes from blog responders and tries to use them to make ANY point(a)didn't make it past 9th grade English where they should have learned how to research and cite correctly, and (b) can't be taken seriously -- ever.

Kurtz, who ironically portrays himself as a media critic, employs logical fallacy (hasty generalization), in what one can only assume is an attempt to tar and feather the entire Left-wing Blogosphere, and the entire Internet, with the same 3 sample brush.
Who does the objective, media critic, employ as his sole source, Michelle Malkin? The professional Liberal hater, Malkin, just happens to have in her possession, 3 samples of Cheney ridicule captured at the Huffington Post, just before they were removed. These posts were written anonymously.
I'm glad we have a hound dog critic like Kurtz on the case.

Right-wing commentators (and at least one Republican congressman) can call for the hanging of Democratic congressmen under the guise of a false Lincoln quote without the media taking note. Yet when a few anonymous comments on Huffpost seem to advocate the death of Dick Cheney it's a major scandal.
Have calls for violence from the right-wing become so common place that they are not newsworthy?
Why is that violent rhetoric is accepted when it comes from the political right but is condemned when it comes from the left?
Posted by: TheoDate: March 1, 2007 06:18 PM

How convenient that her and her merry band of cultists just happened to be lurking around the blog posts around the time they were posted and before the posts were scrubbed.
I don't doubt there are liberals who want Cheney dead. But I also don't doubt there are wingnuts who would pose as anonymous liberals in order to post crap on a public message board only to use them for cheap shots later.
And the fact that Howie doesn't even bother to consider that possibility before he parrots Malkin's shrill unhinged rants just reveals that this man has no credibility whatsoever left as a journalist.
It sounds like Howie got much more than just an interview from Malkin last week.
