Rudy Biographer Blasts Newsweek's Giuliani Puffery
March 5, 2007 -- 2:09 PM EST // View Comments (87) // Post a Comment

It would be hard to overstate the enormity of the favor that Newsweek is doing for Rudy Giuliani this week. The mag's enormous cover story is a profile of Giuliani bearing the cover line "The Real Rudy," which under normal circumstances would lead you to expect that you'll be getting an unvarnished portrait of the former New York mayor.

But I just checked in with Rudy's preemient biographer, Wayne Barrett. His take on Newsweek's effort? "It's an application for access, that's what this piece is. They wanted access to the Giuliani campaign, they had none. They submitted this application."

The piece actually has this title:

...and is filled with comically hyperbolic phrases like this one:

Born in 1944, Rudolph William Giuliani was raised to be tough in moments of peril.

What's more, while the piece does revisit some of Rudy's infamous low points, it also recycles myths about Rudy's mayoralty that, to put it charitably, didn't belong in a piece bearing the cover line "The Real Rudy." Newsweek says:

As long as Rudy got results, the public didn't particularly care how he did it, or how many fights he picked. The squeegee men were gone, as were turnstile jumpers and the more notorious pornographic emporiums.

This is bullshit, pure and simple. The public did in fact care "how he did it." Polls showed that while New York City residents did applaud the goals Rudy reached, majorities were decidedly opposed to his tactics. A New York Times poll in April of 2000, in the wake of the police shooting of Patrick Dorismond, found that 50% disapproved of Rudy's handling of crime, his signature issue, and concluded that "New York City residents have a decidedly negative view of Mr. Giuliani's handling of race relations." This is not a small falsehood on Newsweek's part, incidentally. The discomfort New Yorkers felt with Rudy's tactics, as opposed to his results, go directly to the heart of questions about the man's character -- and whitewashing this discomfort out of the public record is just dismal journalism.

That's not all. The notion that Rudy banished the "squeegie-men" from New York is another myth, according to Rudy biographer Wayne Barrett -- yet there's little question that this myth will figure centrally in the heroic narrative of Rudy that's taking shape with the help of publications like Newsweek. Barrett told me: "The squeegie men were gone before Rudy took office. Ray Kelly [the top cop under former Mayor David Dinkins] got rid of them. [Rudy police commissioner] Bill Bratton admitted this in his 1998 book. He wrote that `ironically, Giuliani and I got credit for the initiative,' and that `only politics prevented David Dinkins and Ray Kelly from receiving their due.'"

Finally, there's the small matter of Rudy's conduct on 9/11. Barrett's latest book details a wealth of counterintuitive info about his performance that day. Barrett tells me that he spent an hour and a half on the phone with a Newsweek reporter, much of it discussing the stuff he uncovered about Rudy and 9/11. But get this -- while Newsweek did credit Barrett for a revelation about the criminal past of Rudy's father, the mag didn't include a single word from Barrett's interview or book about 9/11.

"A serious magazine like Newsweek shouldn't refuse to ask any questions about what happened that day," Barrett tells me. "I don't care if I'm quoted or not -- that's not the point. The only thing I care about is getting journalists to look critically at his 9/11 performance. If Newsweek just rolls over and bows to myths, they will help make him President."

You mean like this?

Update: The piece's author, Jonathan Darnan, has responded to our request for comment with an email saying, "we feel we published a balanced piece that deals with many of Rudy's perceived strengths and weaknesses."

Shame on Newsweek. The magazine risks becoming as irrelevant as every other print publication in the country. Thank God for blogs.

At least we can be thankful that they didn't cover a Republican candidate who actually has a chance of winning the GOP primaries.

I'm so sick of people pretending a pro-choice, pro-civil union, anti-gun, cousin-marrying, twice-divored, former NYC mayor has a snowball's chance of winning the GOP nomination.

If the media plays it straight Rudy should be toast, if they continue down the mythological path like this, meet your next President.

Newsweek should be be irrelevant, as it's People Magazine in drag, but sadly it isn't.

Wait, is this really surprising? Newsweek is the magazine that paved the way for Time's downfall, the political rag of the Reader's Digest set. That they would engage in puffery is old news and to be expected.

Greg, you highlighted the key right in your second paragraph:

"It's an application for access, that's what this piece is. They wanted access to the Giuliani campaign, they had none. They submitted this application."

I don't really get why the MSM values access so much, especially at the cost of accurate and balanced reporting. But it surely is one of the biggest explanations for their sins.

By "squeegie men," I think a lot of people are really referring to the number of homeless on the streets in general, which did decline under Giuliani. But you know why they declined? Because Giuliani closed a bunch of homeless shelters and we had three or four really cold winters. They died.

I guess some reporters (and I'm a reporter) only care about getting "access" to the campaign, rather than to information during the presidency. Because if Giuliani becomes president, the clampdown on public information and media access will rival, if not surpass, the Bush administration's.

Ohiomeister, you forgot to mention that he has dressed in drag, lived with homosexuals when mayor while transitioning between wives and apparently doesn't get on with his kids.

But strange as it may seem, he is the frontrunner. Sure he has a lot of liabilities for the GOP nod, but it's just silly to assume he can't win. I think partly it has to do with confused psychology on the part of the GOP faithful who know that the Iraq War and all that have gone very badly, but don't want to admit it even to themselves. Somehow, Giuliani's image of 9/11 strength, his authoritarian personality and his simultaneous support of but lack of involvement with the Iraq War fit in with this. They liked the photop of Bush with the bullhorn days after 9/11 and emotionally they want to rewind the clock to that moment. This is the best way they know how. I'm not saying it makes logical sense, it's emotional.

I gave up on Newsweeek years ago. I stick with Time occasionally, but you have to admit that the major news publications in this country have set aside journalistic integrity in favor of political access and schmoozing incestously with DC insiders.

The MSM today prostitutes themselves for access. And it has reached the point where they don't even have any shame about their sinking behaviors.

The Republican party under Bush has no principles. None. And those who have followed him to this point won't let principles get in their way if they think they can hold onto power. Plus, as Crust noted above, Giuliani is an authoritarian, and Republicans love that. Despite everything, he will win the nomination.

Even having lived in NYC for the past 8 years, I noticed something in a NY Times profile that I didn't know about Rudy -- His kids, whom he used to use as a campaign prop, are estranged from him. Andrew said he hasn't talked to his father 'recently'. He blew off graduations and school plays. Judy Nathan is the problem.

This may or may not be relevent to the family values crowd -- I suspect not, as I find them to be utterly accepting of the sins in their crowd -- but I was surprised.

I'm sure, of course, that the press would treat such news in a Democratic candidate in a similar manner -- A17, in passing.

Right? I mean Bill Clinton never had to deal with personal issues, right?

From WTC to WTF?!

Okay, hypothetical exercise. Say you're the mayor of a large city. That city's tallest, most visible building is bombed by extranational terrorists. The bombings damage the building, not extensively, but the point is made: that building is a trophy for a certain class of extranational terrorists.

As mayor of the city, what do you do when the time comes to choose a location for a crisis response center to deal with terrorist attacks?

Here's why no sane American should ever trust Rudy with their national security: after the 1993 WTC bombing, he moved NYC's emergency response center to ... the WTC. From WTC to WTF?!

As a longtime past (and current) Democratic resident of NYC I have to take some exception to Gregg's comments. I've lived through Lindsay, Beame, Koch, Dinkins, Giuliani and Bloomberg, so you could say I've lived through the bad times (really, really, bad!) and the good times. The positive changes Giuliani made to the quality of life in this city were dramatic and significant and certainly more than just the removal of a few squeegee men (some of whom were pretty, unbalanced & dangerous). I disagree that Dinkins actually did ANYTHING as mayor and credit Giuliani fully for the remakable changes - literally overnight. My work caused me to travel by subway as many as ten times a day - every day - and I can tell you that improvement alone (better service, clean cars, not having to step over homeless folks EVERYWHERE) was astonishing. I voted for him and would have voted for him again. I would not vote for him for President but I think the overall tone of your comment is unfair and exaggerated and highly inflammatory.

Are there any polls that demonstrate one way or another how many GOP voters know anything about Guiliani's personal life and his socially liberal views? He can overcome the stuff about his divorces/adultery (conservatives are, after all, hyprocrites) but his pro-choice, pro-gay rights views, endorsement of Cuomo, etc.? I'd be shocked if he could survive all that.

I'll answer my own question:

From MSNBC:
"Charlie Cook, editor of the Cook Political Report, warned that three-quarters of those surveyed in a recent Gallup poll were unaware of Mr Giuliani's views on abortion and gay marriage. "His backers are mostly conservatives and evangelicals drawn by his 9/11 strong leadership. That support will melt like an ice cream cone in August once abortion, guns, gay rights, Vietnam draft, marriage to his second cousin, and infidelities come out."

I recall Ed Rendell being "America's Mayor." (And he really did save a city from the brink.)

Posted by: dbenner

I would think Giuliani's support of illegal immigrant sanctuary laws would cause some concern in Conservative circles. He even suggested ignoring the law when they lost an appeal to the Supremem Court.

These Newsweek and Time cover stories preach only to the converted.
If by some miracle he is nominated, he will be crucified for his cross dressing, abortion and immigrant, gay marriage stands, adulterous behaviors and who knows what.
He's an empty suit who believes his own press releases and the praise of the sychopants who hold his coat.
His office did do a good job on 9-11, but it was his prime deputy mayor who deserves the credit.

As with the demise of the LA Times, this is Private Equity's take on "news". Forget running a business well, making money over time, creating careers and a passion for news, for real fair and balanced reporting. Forget keeping everybody on their toes by revealing the truth, or being able to peel it from the varnished lies.

Private Equity is about stripping assets someone else put together to make a lot of money NOW. That includes preventing news from coming out. Fox, for example, can make a lot more money from sponsorships, tax breaks, and mergers or divestitures permitted by a friendly govt than they ever could printing real news.

Here's to trust-held newspapers and the blogosphere. They might even keep the news industry from going the way of the Dodo.

"I don't really get why the MSM values access so much, especially at the cost of accurate and balanced reporting. But it surely is one of the biggest explanations for their sins."

IMHO, the access explanation is mostly just a lame excuse. During their 8-year jihad against President Clinton, the media didn't seem all that concerned about access.

What reporters are concerned about is pleasing their bosses...and what most pleases media megacorp bosses is when Dems get smeared and Repubs get their behinds kissed.

If Rudy had a "D" after his name we'd be hearing 24/7 about his incest problem (first marriage to second cousin), his serial adultery problem (at least 2 extramarital affairs), his messy divorce from wife #2, and about how his children were whitewashed from his exploratory committee website.

"I don't really get why the MSM values access so much..."

I'd say it's because the professional incentives of a career in journalism have become oriented towards celebrity (book deals, TV spots, etc.) rather than supplying readers with facts. Sucking up to someone who's going to be powerful and getting a good advance to write a book about them is a much more efficient way to advance your career than, say, digging through documents (or even biographies written by people who went digging through documents).

Also, apropos of the reminder that "New York City residents [had] a decidedly negative view of Mr. Giuliani's handling of race relations" -- I would suspect that many of Giuliani's current supporters see that as a feature, not a bug. To such people, Giuliani's callous disregard for the fate of people like Abner Louima and Amadou Diallo seemed to indicate a disdain for the civil rights of minorities which they welcomed and may explain why many of them were so upset (or, perhaps, disillusioned) when Giuliani heaped praise on Abraham Lincoln a few days ago.

greg, since others have already addressed the suck-up aspects of the piece, per se, i'm more interested in the comment from the piece's author.

assuming you didn't truncate his comments, darnan's reaction demonstrates exactly why it is that so many of us who truly are predisposed to like news-gathering organizations are as apalled by the standards of contemporary journalism as we are.

i mean, notice what passes for "balanced," "many," "strengths," and weaknesses." these are words that have apparently taken on completely different meanings in the inner sanctums of journalism than they have in everyday conversation if this article is anything to go by.

Unbelievable. Where do you begin?

First of all, how can you tell the "Real Rudy" story without mentioning that this is the guy who was so stupid that he put the city's emergency response center on an upper floor of WTC 7?

When people told him that not only was it an unnecessary center (there was one at Police HQ, and spending money on improvements there made a lot of sense) but that the location was appallingly stupid, because no one with a lick of sense puts an emergency response center in a skyscraper, and certainly not one that's been targeted by terrorists, he responded with his characteristic petulance.

He said the criticisms had no merit. He attacked people personally. He accused them of not caring about terrorism. He accused them of being political opportunists who wanted to make him look bad.

And the emergency response center? It was never used on September 11, and it was utterly destroyed when the WTC collapsed.

This decision was a really good insight into Rudy's judgment & governing style on issues that mattered to him. I can see why it didn't make the cut.

Have to second Dem-Agog above re improvements in NYC. I remember working in NYC in the 80's and commuting in and out of Penn Station, which had so many homeless people. I saw a naked woman once in a stairwell; I put my briefcase down in a phone booth (this was before cell phones) and picked it up and it was dripping, emptied the contents into a bag and threw it away. What could it have been besides urine? It wasn't raining out.

The city is much cleaner now.

Giuliani will get a lot of credit from people in the New York area whereas Hillary Clinton is seen as just "there." She hasn't done anything for anyone.

Rania, i can't speak to how the residents of new york feel about rudy vs. his predecessors as mayor, but i can speak to what the polling data shows us about the preference of the state of new york (i haven't seen any nyc-specific data), and every poll i've seen shows clinton well ahead of giuliani on a statewide basis. given that upstate is generally republican territory, it's hard for me to think that the polling reflects a massive giuliani advantage in nyc that is outweighed elsewhere in the state....

On his marriages, honestly, this is a love letter.

They imply his first marriage fell apart because of overwork, but fail to mention that in his second marriage, Judi Nathan was NOT Rudy's first affair (he'd been involved for years with his press secretary). So, um, maybe the first marriage fell apart for the same reason the second did--he was catting around?

I love this: "When Hanover's lawyers filed a 'paramour access motion' seeking to prevent Nathan from entering Gracie Mansion, where Hanover continued to live,"--I think that should read "where Hanover and Guilani's two adolescent children continued to live,"

And what's this nonsense casting Rudy as a media victim: "No detail seemed too personal for the papers—even the fact that Giuliani's cancer treatment had rendered him temporarily impotent" Guiliani's OWN LAWYER publicly made the statement that he was impotent, as a defense to the accusation that he was having an affair!

Honestly, how can you be a media victim when the media is simply reprinting statements your own lawyer released to them?

I'm sorry, he did all this and he only got 55%? With "his city delivered from strife," this was his meager reward? Are the people of New York demented? Guiliani did all these fabulous things and he ONLY got 55% of the vote? By comparison, Ed Koch won re-election with 78.5% of the vote in 1985.

Golly gee, it's almost like there were failures in his first term that accounted for such a slim rel-election victory. It's almost like he did a lot of things WRONG, or there were many things he could have done better, or almost like many of these good things happened in spite of Giuliani as opposed to because of him.

Wait, I'm talking crazy talk. I think I saw Rudy Guiliani's sacred visage in a grilled cheese sandwich!

Polyblog is right, Giuliani's real appeal has nothing to do with 9/11, and 'squeegee men' is nothing but a blast on the dog-whistle.

Even the good people of Peoria first and foremost know that Rudy is the guy who made New York safe for Whitey again, and the median GOP voter could care less if he had six wives, or webbed feet. He has an actual track record of keeping The Other in line -- no senator can claim that.

Mr. & Mrs. Suburban White Voter will consider Amidou Diallo, and Abner Louima, and Patrick Dorismond features, not bugs. And the 'religious' voters have already shown they'll jettison their 'Christian' convictions in a heartbeat if it's the price you have to pay to get a quality hater in the White House.

Look, the implication that Rudy did anything but take advantage of the situation is pure BS. Here is a former prosecutor presiding over an increasingly corrupt city (that is the CORRECT interpretation in September 2001), making dictatorial decisions with absolutely NO citizen participation and BOOM (literally) he finds his STAGE.

That is what he was, the big-Turd-actor. How easy can Americans be manipulated by the Tee Vee these days? I don't know, myself, because I refuse to watch it. But, apparently, it is even more of a force than it was when I turned it off.

Rudy did NOTHING. Worse, he had already hired a corrupt and ineffectual police chief who contributed to the deaths of hundreds of public safety officers. That is Rudy's legacy DEAD Policemen and Firemen. Bone shards. Thank you Rudy.

In the days and weeks after the disaster at the WTC, Rudy co-conspired with Christy Whitman to LIE to Manhattanites about air quality and left us to our own devices for our long mental recovery.

Greg,

I figured you would like this Fox News.com Headline

House Democrats Push to Add Billions of Dollars to Bush's Iraq Funding Bill

http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,257123,00.html

Now of course when you read the first line of the story you see why those pesky TAX and SPEND Democrats want to spend money

House Democrats are pushing to add billions of dollars to President Bush's $93.4 billion request for military operations in Iraq and Afghanistan, including $900 million for troops suffering from brain injuries and post-traumatic stress disorder. An additional $2.5 billion would go to strengthen training and readiness for forces not deployed in war zones, and $1.4 billion would go to address housing allowance shortfalls.

Shame on Democrats for spending tax payer money to support the troops!!!
