CNN's Suzanne Malveaux: Is Pelosi Becoming "Most Controversial House Speaker Yet"?
April 4, 2007 -- 5:46 PM EST // View Comments (1211) // Post a Comment

Here's a real sign of the times: The leading cable news network thinks that Nancy Pelosi -- by virtue of the fact that she paid a visit to Syria -- may be on her way to becoming the "most controversial speaker yet." Yes, more controversial than Newt Gingrich, who tried to shut down the government, tried to impeach the President for lying about sex, allegedly let his budget policy be driven by the fantasy that Bill Clinton had "snubbed" him on the way to a funeral, and had a fusillade of ethics charges filed against him by Dems in Congress.

I'm really not kidding about this. CNN's Suzanne Malveaux just teased an upcoming CNN segment about the trip to Syria by saying the following:

"And, Nancy Pelosi in Syria and in the crosshairs of Vice President Cheney. Is she on her way to becoming the most controversial House Speaker yet?"

What makes this all the more remarkable is that even CNN's Wolf Blitzer knows this story is bogus -- indeed, he has now said as much repeatedly. On Friday, Blitzer said this:

...to hear the White House tell it, you would think the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, has gone wild. What's so wrong about a visit to Syria?

And introducing a news segment on the Pelosi-to-Syria story later on the same program, Blitzer also said this to CNN reporter Elaine Quijano:

I'm Wolf Blitzer. You're in THE SITUATION ROOM.

Congress goes on spring break and some are going abroad, but an angry White House now accusing the House speaker, Nancy Pelosi, of simply going too far. She's joining a parade of lawmakers to Syria. In fact, three Republicans are there right now. So what's the problem?

After Blitzer's very good question, which reporter Quijano didn't answer, Quijano went on to do an entire segment about this without even mentioning the Republicans who also went to Syria. Yes, Pelosi is a far higher-ranking official than the GOP Congressmen who visited, but still, not mentioning their visit is a glaring omission -- one that CNN just blithely keeps on committing.

More broadly, it needs to be said that CNN's coverage of the Pelosi-to-Syria story has been simply dismal -- profoundly embarrassing. If Blitzer were sitting next to you in a bar and was halfway into his second lite beer, he'd tearfully admit as much. It's really not a stretch to say that CNN has repeatedly stooped to doing the White House's bidding. At one point the network actually gave the story the following snide label:

Yep -- "Spring break in Syria." Of course, there was also this, and this this, too.

And now CNN has hit bottom. It's let itself be snookered by the White House's transparently bogus attacks into suggesting that Pelosi may be on her way to being the "most controversial" Speaker yet -- even more controversial than Gingrich. This, even though Blitzer -- and almost certainly other reporters, editors and producers at CNN -- know full well that this story is total horseshit.

Very, very sad. Nothing more to say.

COMMENTS:

I've long thought that "Sooze-Ahhn" (as he pronounces it)is a particularly idiotic example of the too hastily-promoted sorority girl type mannequins who populate CNN nowadays. This episode merely confirms me in that opinion.

Suzanne Malveaux is one of the dumbest correspondents on CNN. I saw her interview John Bolton a day or two ago, and she spouted the same bs about Pelosi without mentioning the fact that Republican congresscritters have also taken trips to Syria.

Are there any intelligent newspeople anymore? The dumbness of this current bunch of supposed journalists is just staggering.

After Blitzer's very good question, which reporter Quijano didn't answer...

It's not even a very good question, IMO -- it's a minimally competent question.

How did mass media journalism get to such a state?

Wasn't a dialog with Syria one of the Iraq Study Group's recommendation? Why is this a big deal? 2 years from now all the Republicans will be screaming that the democratic congress didn't engage in enough diplomacy and didn't follow the Iraq study group when Iraq is in total shambles. Is CNN still a news organization or tabloid? These so called reporters should just keep their opinions to themselves and just report the F'in news.

Malveaux is either partisan, unintelligent, or massively ill-prepared and misinformed. Though CNN isn't very good in general so her poor performance as a "journalist" isn't a surprise.

CNN's recent shoddy, unbalancd and unfair coverage of Nancy Pelosi's trip to Syria is quickly making CNN the most Fox-like network on cable.

On the upside, Malveaux and her kind make showing really bad journalism in the college classroom way too easy. Even the inexperienced freshmen get it.

The thing about the label "controversial" is that it's not so much defined by what you actually do, as by how loud you make the other team shout.

I emailed CNN on Monday and told them that I believed that Malveax was presenting material in a biased manner definitely denigrating Democrats. I noticed this in quite a few of her reportings prior to this, but since she has been on all week it is so evident. I hope everyone will contact CNN.

Justin writes: "Malveaux is either partisan, unintelligent, or massively ill-prepared and misinformed."

There aren't a helluva lot of anchors who are any either intelligent, prepared or informed. It used to be that you were promoted to anchor after proving yourself in the field. You got to sit behind the anchor desk because you were experienced and a critical thinker, no matter how ugly you were. Now, you're put behind the desk because you have a pretty face and wear designer suits. While Malveaux may be an exception, the number of people working in television journalism who have no relevent education or experience is staggering.

Actual quote (thanks to my PVR) of Suzanne Malveaux to the Syrian ambassador:

"We understand that Pelosi met with the Prime Minister of Israel and that she was in fact delivering a message. But with all due respect, she has no official capacity to negotiate with your government here. Why should the Americans or even the international community see this anymore as a political stunt, a publicity stunt, a big wet kiss to President Al Assad?"

Her disrespect and demeaning comments with regard to Speaker Pelosi are completely partisan, unprofessional and improper for a journalist. She owes the Speaker an apology and an opportunity to appear and defend herself from these accusations.

CNN still isn't as bad as CNN Headline News! I occasionally listen to a local station here in San Jose, CA, which has HN feeds. Since Anna Nicole Smith died, they seem to have almost full-time coverage of her on Headline News. I now only listen to the station during commute hours, for local traffic. I've given up completely on all of the CNN media offerings.... with no loss of importance.

Here's this brilliant exchange from Malveaux yesterday:

JACK CAFFERTY, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Between going on break -- the House for two weeks, the Senate for one -- and going to Iraq, it's no wonder nothing gets done in this country.

Since 2003, 365 members of Congress have visited Iraq.

[...the rest of Jack's piece...]

MALVEAUX: Do you know that 300 -- I think -- 65 members of Congress have actually visited Baghdad.

CAFFERTY: I think I said, since 2003, 365 members of Congress have visited Iraq.

MALVEAUX: Amazing.

Absolutely amazing.

Thank you, Jack.

I watched Suzanne yesterday while I was stuck with a delay at the airport, and when she talked to Paul Begala and Ed Rogers about this, her opinion was clear: the Democratic Congress is evil and disrespectful to Bush. Her words, her facial expressions, all of it generated pure antipathy. Begala, thank God, pulled no punches and fired back hard at her hackery. All in all, though, it's more proof that the cable networks' reporters and anchors scream objectivity only when doing their hit pieces or when bowing down before Bush, and ooze a complete lack of that "objectivity" when they start discussing the "issues."

Cable news makes me sick. Except for Olbermann.

"Yes, more controversial than Newt Gingrich, who tried to shut down the government,"

****Takes TWO to tango (meaning Pres. Clinton also).

"...tried to impeach the President for lying about sex"

****For lying UNDER OATH actually for which Clinon was disbarred also.

".....allegedly let his budget policy be driven by the fantasy that Bill Clinton had "snubbed" him on the way to a funeral"

****There was a surplus so something worked OK - right?

"..and had a fusillade of ethics charges filed against him by Dems in Congress."

****All pretty much phony and discredited except for one that cost Gingrich an unprecedented fine of $300,000 I believe.

Since CNN's reasoning seems to have escaoed you all, Pelosi is "controversial" not because she made the trip, but because she made it OVER THE PUBLIC OBJECTIONS of our Commander In Chief. GOT IT FOLKS?

In Russia, the main TV stations are a joke; total propaganda for Putin. People who have the means, have foreign tv and the internet, so they never even bother watching 'official' news.

The major news media outlets are in the same boat in the US. Not as bad, but same stuff.

Recently CNN did a special about Iran; you know, flashy graphics, heavy overtone music, etc. They were doing the history of iraq, briefly showed Mosadegh, and then went on to talk about the Shah without even mentioning the CIA-led overthrow by Kermit Roosevelt. I mean the most important thing is modern Iranina history and just skipped over - why?

We must have some kind of laws to hold the media accountable. Something along the lines of the 'fairness doctrine' destroyed by Reagan. This needs alot of thought, but people need to understand what they are being presented with

The next show after the Situation Room was Lou Dobbs, and his "survey" of the day was a question about whether Pelosi's visit was appropriate or not. Usually his watchers go 90%+ for whatever point of view Dobbs has taken. I didn't catch the whole hour, but just the end after that, where Lou practically held his nose while reporting that 72% of the survey respondents said it was appropriate for Pelosi to visit Syria.

I think that for days, from many different reporters (at least on cable), there has been a constant tone of shock and dismay at the Democrats inappropriate behavior, because they aren't keeping to their assigned roles.

Good for them!

CNN is the new Faux News. As evidence, may I present yesterday's online Quick Poll? The question asked was: "Do you think people with contagious diseases should be locked up if they refuse to take precautions to avoid infecting others?"

The results? 90% of the 105883 people who voted said "Yes" (95371 votes), and 10% (10512 votes) said "No". Remember--they weren't voting on whether someone who knowingly spreads a contagious disease should be arrested or face a trial. No, 95371 of CNN's viewers who took the time to vote would simply lock the sick person up. No trial necessary. I'm not sure if this is an indictment of CNN or of its viewers (or of Americans in general) but it says an awful lot about what sort of an audience is watching CNN these days.

Suzanne Malveaux, for the young heads, was an old D.C. anchor (at WRC 4) where she was essentially useless. She has continued this streak of futility at CNN now. She rakes Pelosi for taking a trip to actually stop the war, and she starts busting on the Syrian Ambassador today during the situation room for not holding to his word...even though he was, suggesting that Syria was not making an attempt to become a peaceful attempt even though all of their actions would suggest otherwise. Unfortunately, Malveaux's not smart enough to know this and CNN, because of it, is starting to do a backflip over the shark.

"The next show after the Situation Room was Lou Dobbs, and his "survey" of the day was a question about whether Pelosi's visit was appropriate or not."

Lou Dobbs is a flatulent bag of foul air. When he's not stuttering and blubbering about the latest "outrageous, unbelievable" behavior of some politician, he's on his soapbox, "telling off" the members of Congress (I understand ALL members of Congress watch Lou religiously). I can not imagine how that guy keeps his job. What a nitwit. Not to mention the fact that he read one of my emails on the air, and HE NEVER SENT ME MY FREE COPY OF HIS MORONIC BOOK. And besides, that one rotten tooth in the front really creeps me out.

It wouldn't matter if she wasn't writing her own questions. She never let the Syrian ambassador finish a statement before she was blurting something else on top of it. Never letting up while the two tried to talk at the same time. The guy wasn't even doing the politcal tap dance, either. Rude doesn't even come close to what she was doing.

What's up with CNN nowadays and its nonstop parade of the profane and publicity-starved? I really don't need "The News" -- such as it is nowadays -- delivered with attitude to burn. To be honest, I've pretty much quit watching that network after seeing not too long ago hours and hours of Anderson Cooper following around Angelina Jolie in Africa. It would be interesting to note how many others feel that way, too.

Talk radio host Randi Rhoads was right -- hard, fact-driven news has been cancelled and replaced by unsubstantiated partisan opinion and salacious gossip. And we as a people are much worse off for that.

I gave up reading the NYT and the WaPo years ago. I read the newspaper now for local news only, and even that is suspect. I don't watch the big three networks at all for news and I haven't for many years. I do look at news on the internet where you can get coverage by many reporters in most cases. I know enough about history and current events to know when I am being handed a "load" as in the claim that Iraq was supporting al Qaeda. NPR has some value, but they are beholden to big donors and Federal funding so they aren't going to get too far out of line. Be sure to read Eric Alterman's What Liberal Media, and Eric Boehlert's Lap Dogs.

Possibly the best moment I've seen recently on CNN was this morning when they were showing footage of the freed British sailors speaking (this was while they were still in Iran). Instead of carrying the soundtrack of the soldiers speaking for themselves, CNN overdubbed someone TRANSLATING WHAT THE BRITISH SAILORS WERE SAYING INTO ENGLISH. A truly remarkable moment in modern journalism.

It's sexism at its most extreme. It annoys them that she is a Democrat; but, it is more annoying that she isn't a man.

Seriously, Bonnie is starting to hit at something.

Gingrich did FAR more extreme things in the Mideast and in China. He actively undermined the President, going so far as to accuse him of supporting terrorists. And he triggered an international incident with his reckless "bring it on" moment vis-a-vis China, when he made them lose face by stating flat-out that the US would go to war with them if they dared go after Taiwan.

And keep in mind that Gingrich took these reckless actions under a President who was conducting his foreign policy well within American norms, who'd won every military engagement he'd fought, and who wasn't at that very moment LOSING two middle eastern wars and petulantly refusing to talk to half the nations in the region.

Nancy Pelosi is being treated FAR worse than Newt Gingrich even though every single one of her actions is categorically more defensible than his.

So, is it because she's a Democrat or because she's a woman? Those are the only explanations left for CNN. Do they cover her actions more negatively than Gingrich's because she's a Democrat or because she's a woman?

I'm sorry for having wasted the last 5 minutes of my life reading these INSANE comments!

I respect Nancy Pelosi as a human being and as a woman who has established herself well in a dog eat dog environment. Having said that, she was flat out wrong for making this trip to a foreign country that is on the state departments HIT LIST of Terrorist Sponsored societies against the wishes and better judgment of the President!

You can all argue till your blue in the face, but the fact is Nancy had no business trying to act as the Secretary of State and before any of you go half cocked on the double standard question about REPUBS making the trip, ask yourselves this very simple question:
"If you told your kids not to go to the Mall and they disobeyed you, would you be lenient towards them?"
You cannot in good faith support the actions of Ms. Pelosi and at the same time ridicule the foreign policy of a President in a time of WAR!!!

Stop being so naive, these questions are planned WELL in advance and are designed for several reasons, one of which is to placate the right or to score points. Why else would this Pelosi bashing be happening, which had less to do with "intelligence" and more of calculating what how viewers will respond. Blitzer may adjust HIS intros somewhat, however you know damn well, he has a lot to do with what EVERYBODY is saying on CNN. CNN and all the other TV news, has never been about neutrality, every issue has agenda, ABC "news"admits they are going to the right, CNN will continue to disregard left voices when it comes to the war, and will continue to be the employment center for Retired Genderals, Colonel s, and CIA officials.
CNN has seen fox's financial "success" and do doubt are trying to come close as much as they can, at the same time serving as mouth pieces for the mostly conservative, pro-war power elite in D.C.
