Fred Hiatt And Liz Cheney -- Part III!

Indulge me one more time on this: Here's something that puts this whole Fred Hiatt-Liz Cheney thing in perspective. It pretty neatly reveals the true absurdity of the decision by Fred Hiatt and The Washington Post to publish an Op-ed by Ms. Cheney attacking Nancy Pelosi without disclosing that Ms. Cheney is the daughter of Veep Cheney.

A source sent me today's White House press pool report that I think reveals this ridiculousness as clearly as you could hope for. It turns out that Veep Cheney and daughter Liz are spending the day together today, and the pool report describes some of their activities:

A couple little newslets: Vice President Cheney's plane hit a bird as it was landing here in Chicago this morning, but Air Force Two touched down safely and no one aboard even noticed, according to Lea Ann McBride. "The landing was safe," McBride said. "The VP was notified immediately after his speech." Mechanics are now checking the plane to make sure it will be safe to fly back. No word on the condition of the bird.
After the speech, VPOTUS, accompanied by Liz Cheney, made an unannounced stop at the American Girl Place across from the Park Hyatt so that they could buy a birthday gift for one of his granddaughters. It caused a bit of a mad scene in a store that's usually a madhouse to begin with as VPOTUS provided cover for Liz by posing for pictures with little girls while his daughter secured the Nikki doll (the doll of the year for 2007, complete with Western cowboy hat and get-up).

Look: If you are going to publish a piece attacking Veep Cheney's key political antagonist right now -- Pelosi -- your readers deserve to know it if the author is so close to the Veep that she might be spending the very next day after publication frolicking around with him on Air Force Two and doing a spot of shopping for the grandkids. Right?

Relatedly, guess who agrees with us that WaPo should I.D. Ms. Cheney as the Veep's daughter when she writes for the paper: One of the Post's own columnists, Eugene Robinson. The last time WaPo published an attack by Ms. Cheney on one of the Veep's political opponents without disclosing the familial link, Robinson was asked a question by a reader who opined that the link should be mentioned. His answer:

Eugene Robinson: I think everybody knows who Liz Cheney is. But, on balance, I agree with you. Better to err on the side of too much identification.

Not everybody knows who she is, but still: This is basically it. If we're going to err, it's better to err on the side of full disclosure. Better to err on the side of more information, not less. And with that, you've heard this blog's last words on the topic. Barring another development, of course.

I may have missed something, but we've had lots of info on Liz Cheney's past employment and associations, but what is she doing *now* besides writing op-eds to help Daddy?

This willingness on the part of the WAPO editorial
staff to not practice the ethical basics of journalism at this critical juncture in our democracy is pathetic as well as revealing. The Post's recent partisan political hatchet job on Speaker Pelosi clearly illustrates Mr. Hiatt's blatant bias, his lack of character and total dedication to republican talking points. At one time, Hiatt's sycophantic rantings would result in losing ones position. But no more. There could have been a battalion of republican congressmen in Syria prior to her visit. Hiatt would not think to mention it. Mr. Hiatt, your type of journalism plays well on Fox News. Go there and spew your garbage. Obviously, the once great Washington Post editorial dept. is reveling in it's current state of journalistic malaise and appears unwilling to do anything about it. Shame on you all. The American public demands much more.

Not that I'm shocked at the Post's hackish behavior, but can't they find someone other than Cheney's daughter to write an op-ed attacking Nancy Pelosi? Maybe Nancy Pelosi's daughter should submit an op-ed in which she attacks Dick Cheney . . .

Great job, Greg, but you missed one key piece of Hiatt BS. Here's Fred:

We published Liz Cheney's piece based on her qualifications as a former high-ranking State Dept. official with oversight of Near Eastern Affairs. I don't believe qualified professional women need to be identified by their husbands or fathers, even when well-known.

But as Robert Dreyfuss pointed out in The American Prospect last summer, Liz Cheney's "qualifications" were clearly her father:

“She came in knowing very little about the Middle East,” says Marina S. Ottaway, senior associate and co-director of the Democracy and Rule of Law Project at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, who has worked with Liz Cheney on democratic reform issues. “She had a mandate to do democracy promotion, but she had very little familiarity with the subject. … They deliberately picked a person who was not a Middle East specialist, so that the conventional wisdom, well, let me rephrase, so that real, actual knowledge of the issues in the region wouldn’t interfere with policy.”

Liz Cheney catapulted into her current job after a rather undistinguished career that leapfrogged from public to private life and back again. In her early 20s, she did a stint at the State Department while her father was secretary of defense in the first Bush administration, and then headed to law school at the University of Chicago and worked for Armitage Associates, a firm run by Richard Armitage. As an attorney, she worked for the International Finance Corporation of the World Bank, and served briefly as a U.S. Agency for International Development (AID) officer in Hungary and Poland. Her Middle East experience was, well, limited.

Asked about Liz’s familiarity with the Middle East, a former staffer at the Middle East Institute, a Washington, D.C., think tank, says that she dabbled in the Institute’s Arabic language classes. “And she’d come to our annual conference,” she said. That’s it.

That was, however, apparently enough to get her named deputy assistant secretary of state for Near Eastern Affairs (NEA) in 2002.

In an administration in which policy toward Iraq and the Middle East was mostly guided by know-nothings and the inexperienced, perhaps it isn’t surprising that Liz Cheney got herself named to a top position at Near Eastern Affairs. How, exactly, she ended up at NEA in the first place is something of a mystery, although no one interviewed doubted that it was at the behest of the vice president. One former deputy assistant secretary at NEA said that the bureau was offered the choice of either Liz Cheney or Danielle Pletka, a neoconservative hard-liner who is the vice president for foreign and defense policy studies at the American Enterprise Institute. Pletka, a sharp-elbowed insider who helped write the Iraq Liberation Act in the 1990s, was reportedly seen by Secretary of State Colin Powell and NEA as the greater of two evils, and so Cheney got the job.

Now, I'm speaking as someone who lives some 5,000 miles from the center of the so-called "action", so I perhaps hold a different perspective than those of you who live and work there. However, there appears to me a growing and very serious disconnect between what folks in Washington are doing, and how it's being perceived by a majority of those residing outside the Beltway.

Washington's political and media elite have always been kindly prediposed toward personal indulgence. By publishing Ms. Cheney's attack on Speaker Pelosi, Fred Hiatt and The Washington Post has once again served only to highlight the incestuous working relationships amongst that elite's various component parts.

Only last fall, that paper was embarrassed by the revelations that its arguably most celebrated employee, Bob Woodward, had failed to disclose to both editors and readers alike his tangential but not insignificant role in facilitating the Bush administration's potentially unlawful outing of CIA operative Valerie Plame. Woodward, who along with Post columnist Richard Cohen had been a very vocal critic of Patrick Fitzgerald's investigation into that affair, was forced to issue a public mea culpa, much to his paper's embarrassment.

It would appear to me that Mr. Hiatt needs to seriously reassess his paper's role as a member of the proverbial "Fourth Estate", and ask himself how its current pro-Bush administration editorial policy is literally playing in Peoria.

Because with that administration and its GOP allies teetering on the verge of total dysfunction if not an utter meltdown, Hiatt and the rest of his self-absorbed crowd best realize that a very decided majority of people in this country have taken note of the attendant political chaos, and are most definitely not amused by what they see.

Nice strawman attempt by Hiatt to put Josh on the defensive:

Hiatt might have a point if Liz' father were simply a celebrity. But the coin that bought her space on the WaPo editorial page was paid for by her relationship to her father. The same requirement for disclosure would apply if Liz were a son.

In this administration, it's all about "who you know," so relationships of all sorts matter. Does anyone think Liz Cheney would have had a professional career that would grant her space on the WaPo editorial page if her father were not Dick?

Thanks, I knew some Post reporters had referred to this issue when the previous incident occured.

The thing is, Robinson chats every Tuesday and fields some tough and even hostile questions. Hiatt and the editorial board don't engage in any chats, at least that I know of (Broder and Froomkin do, but not the editorial board). I feel bad for the news reporters, who so often have to field questions about WTH is up with the editorial board.

FWIW, my local paper published the Liz Cheney op-ed yesterday without any apparent difficulty in solving the imposing journalistic ethical conundrum of whether to identify her as Dick's daughter -- they inserted that obviously relevant info just after her name and before the "resume" positions of the WaPo ID graf.

I know it is sometimes hard to keep track of all the chickenhawks without a scorecard, but Mary Cheyney is the devil spawn who is not allowed to be a member of our armed forces because of her homosexuality, while Liz is in fact eligible to put her big fat ass on the line in Iraq, if she had the courage of her convictions (just like dear old 5 deferments daddy).
