Washington Post: Democratic Victories Bad For Dems, Good For "Gleeful" Republicans
April 2, 2007 -- 10:46 AM EST // View Comments (650) // Post a Comment

Okay, welcome to our first installment of The Public's Always Ahead of the Press and the Pundits -- or "PAP" for short.

Remember how during the 2006 elections literally every political development of any kind was interpreted by pundits and the press as good for the GOP -- that is, until the evidence to the contrary became too overwhelming to ignore?

Well, guess what -- that media narrative is back! Today's Washington Post has a long front-page piece reporting that Republicans are "gleeful" because Dem victories of late have emboldened the party to challenge Bush on a host of national security issues. While the piece demonstrates occasional balance, this excerpt is beyond ridiculous:

Backed by a unified party and fresh from a slew of legislative victories, Democratic leaders appear to believe there is hardly any territory they cannot stray onto, a development that has Republican political operatives gleeful and some Democrats worried. Rep. Tom Cole, chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee, warned of a "political price" at the polls: "If they let their constituents and their ideology drive them past the point where the American people are comfortable, they will find how quickly the voters will react."...

Most Republicans are convinced the president will win his veto standoff over House and Senate war spending bills that would impose mandatory troop withdrawals from Iraq....

That would slow [Democrats'] momentum as they challenge Bush on the territory he has made his political fortune on: terrorism....

Cole, the Oklahoma Republican, warned Democrats not to tamper with the national security laws that Bush secured after the 2001 terrorist attacks. "Americans don't want to reopen the programs that have protected them since 9/11," he said.

The piece goes on to opine that for the GOP, such Dem aggressiveness "could prove to be a political gift."

First off, let's pause to applaud the admirable selflessness of GOP Rep. Tom Cole. Though his job is to get Republicans elected to the House, he nonetheless left partisanship behind to offer the Democrats -- his opponents -- some free advice on how they can stay politically healthy. What a gallant fellow.

Seriously, given what happened in the 2006 elections, and given what polls are telling us today with virtual unanimity, how in the heck could anyone report with no skepticism whatsoever the absurd idea that the boldness of the Dem Congressional majority right now "has Republican political operatives gleeful"? That phrase is, like, so June 2006. What's more, why are we uncritically swallowing the idea that if Bush "wins" the legislative showdown over Iraq, it'll automatically be good politically for the GOP? Poll after poll after poll shows that the public overwhelmingly supports the Dem Congress' efforts to end the war, and indeed many want the Dems to go further than they are in reigning in Bush. From the March 29th Pew poll:

Do you think Democratic leaders in Congress are going too far or not far enough in challenging George W. Bush's policies in Iraq, or are they handling this about right?

Too far 23%
Not far enough 40%
About right 30%
Don't know/Refused 7%

So seventy percent think Dems' aggressiveness is either about right or insufficently aggressive. Meanwhile, on the broader question of national security issues in general -- the grounds for the alleged GOP "gleefulness" about Dem overreaching that the Post is informing us of -- check out this Rasmussen poll from March 23:

On the broader question of National Security, the GOP fares better but not nearly as well as in years gone by. Forty-six percent (46%) of voters trust the Democrats more on National Security while 44% prefer Republicans.

Look, efforts to gauge public opinion on complex matters like these can be inconclusive, and it's of course possible the Dems could overreach at some point. But can we at least wait until there's a single shred of evidence that this is happening at all, much less that the public disapproves of it, before we report that Republicans are "gleeful" about it? More broadly, given all that's happened over the past nine months, how can it be that the cruise control setting for many in the Beltway media on issues from the Attorney Purge to Iraq is still that Dems should tread carefully about confronting the White House in ways the public supports lest that same public turn on them? What the hell has to happen for this to stop?

Update: Incredibly, the Washington Post's most recent poll clearly demonstrates the absurdity of its current thesis. Needless to say, the paper's own numbers -- even though they're directly relevant to the topic at hand -- weren't included in its story today.

COMMENTS:

greg, i just happened to opine elsewhere on john mccain's "me or your lying eyes" stunt in baghdad yesterday.

the clinical definition of neurotic behavior is that which was once adaptive (in mccain's case, a strong belief in his will, which undoubtedly sustained him in north vietnam prison) becomes maladptive (will as a substitute for reality).

as it happens, i think this diagnosis holds true for the beltway press corps as well. For a good 15 years now (basically, since the minute clinton was elected), it's been adaptive behavior in washington, d.c. for journalists to treat republican spin as reality, because really, who was challenging them?

but now they are being challenged and can't seem to change: old habits die hard, and it's so much easier to type (as somerby would put it) to scripts.

so, the direct answer to your question? what it will take is new blood: these clowns are too far gone.

indeed, Howard. Atrios has made the very interesting observation that this is purely generational, that it won't change until the next generation of reporters rises through the ranks of the DC press corps...

"But can we at least wait until there's a single shred of evidence that this is happening at all, much less that the public disapproves of it, before we report that Republicans are "gleeful" about it?"

That's just silliness. But for this game of utter inanity and nonsense, winger blogs wouldn't have anything to publish. And if they don't have anything to publish, then they don't have any reason to attack others who point out their inacuracies, as being "mean-spirited" and "hateful."

The point of right wing pundits and bloggers, and evidently the WaPo Opinion page, is not to accurately report the facts and draw conclusions from those facts, but rather to report the ideologically pure line, and torture the facts by ignoring most of them and by making up others, to the point where "reality" really is how they see it, rather than how it exists in nature.

I suppose they think they can garner voter sympathy if they repeat often enough that the Dems are persecuting them.

Remember, anything that comes out of a Republican voice, pre-2008 election, is a carefully vetted Rovian talking point. They could care less about polls. Their only interest is in regaining and maintaning the total power they enjoyed for 6 years. (God help us)

Used to read the WAPO with interest, in print.
Now I only visit to catch up on Froomkin on the web. Their collective heads are so far up into unmentionable darkness that one wonders why they even bother.
Krauthammer must be having moments of lucidity in the middle of the night - does he scream out loud then? He certainly doesn't show lucidity in his columns; and Broder - the less said ...

The truth: Dem victory is a disaster, catastrophe, calamity and tragedy for the GOP. All their dark deeds will come to light -- the press is just ashamed because they haven't called the GOP on its shenanigans, and will now also be brought to account for its kow-towing to Bush.

Although I agree the excerpt you quote is absurd, and the subtitle "Some on Both Sides See Plans as Risky" does echo the familiar meme that Democrats are always haplessly playing into Republicans hands, I went over to the article and found it less objectionable than your comment makes it sound. There are Democratic retorts to the GOP operative, and the comments are attributed. Cole's quote is preceded by "I suppose there's always a risk of going too far," said House Majority Leader Steny H. Hoyer (D-Md.), "but the risk of not going is far greater."
So all together its a he said-she said sound bite war, with the Republicans way over the top and intellectually dishonest. But that's the way they are, isn't it?

So in the span of htree days, we have a concern troll column from Broder suggesting that Dems Legislate, not Invesitgate, and then a follow-up analysis piece saying not to Legislate either...

John Stewart, as he often does, had the proper response a year or so ago. In response to the Republican leadership claiming inability to do much of anything, Stewart sputtered "but...YOU'RE CONGRESS!!". Thankfully, the current Congress actually realizes this, even if the WaPo seems more than a bit lost about separation of powers and co-equal branches and all that stuff.

error, July 13, 2006:

It is one thing to debate the merits of the war, which the House has on several occasions, but it is quite another to display the photographs of the men and women who have courageously given their lives for our freedom and security for political gain.

I have introduced this legislation to condemn this act, discourage anyone from doing this in the future and hopefully to dissuade the DCCC from continuing to post this ad on their Web site.

Tom Cole on politicizing the war on terror, immediately after George W. Bush ran a campaign ad featuring images of the ruins of the World Trade Center, March 4, 2004:

I promise you this, if George Bush loses the election, Osama bin Laden wins the election, it's that simple.

Tom Cole's specific and explicit condemnation of Bush's use of "war on terror" images for political purposes:

Just, you know, for the record.

"the press is just ashamed because they haven't called the GOP on its shenanigans, and will now also be brought to account for its kow-towing to Bush."

True. The Press ultimately sympathizes with the Administration because every time a monumental Bush failure is exposed, it is as much of an indictment of the Press for failing to expose it themselves, or worse, implicitly endorsing it.

The establishment press are all about puffing up their over-inflated sense of their own importance, unearned power, and catty Beltway fraternization. So of course they will do everything the can to cover for the masters they worship.

Things will only get worse as the public stops listening to the establishment press, and the Bush administration and their poodles in the Congress (I'm looking at you Orin Hatch), are further exposed to be the impotent frauds they really are.

I only hope the Dems have the sense to tell them all to sit and spin while the Congress attempts to do the Peoples' business, while fumigating D.C. of the lingering stench of the last 6 years of GOP control.

Code: "warm," as in, "and fuzzy."

we get sick of hearing about campaigning when we want our "candidates" to do the job they are supposed to. having unhappy fascists blame others is good. we can watch them show everyone just how corrupt they are. Then you will be able to classify republicans as "for crime" There is little doubt that the facts are out there. nothing they have ever claimed in these 6 years have been true. so you will be able to clearly see who is in favor of civilization, and who is against.
only problem, numerous decimocrats are just like them. I haven't been able to be a "party" to their nonsense for most of my adult life. their values are terribly flawed to me.

what is sad is that we will lose both as meaningful parts of this society. but when? how can we accelerate their fall?

"Backed by a unified party and fresh from a slew of legislative victories, Democratic leaders appear to believe there is hardly any territory they cannot stray onto, a development that has Republican political operatives gleeful and some Democrats worried."

Yep, that's quite a sunny disposition these Republicans have. Not only are they not upset over new-found Democratic confidence and electoral victory, their political operative are "gleeful."

I would venture that a 2008 Democratic presidential win should make them positively escstatic.

Greg,

What has to happen for this to stop is that the major media outlets have to be sold away from their corporate owners and "journalists" have to start being journalists again instead of wannabe celebrities who turn their fame into riches and stardom.

Also, I personally think it would be a good idea if the Democrats started to aggressively go after the press just as the Republicans have done for the past 50 God Damned years and call them what they are: lying, lazy, hypocrites!

I really think the Democrats should take Cole's advice given the strategic brilliance the Republicans showed in '06. Oh, wait. Translation: Why exactly does this guy think anyone would find his advice valuable? Jeez.

Posted by: Natural Anthem

Obviously Cole is right. What the Democrats fail to appreciate is that it is dangerous to oppose the President on the war in Iraq becasue the war in Iraq is popular. You see, it is really the war on terrorism, and terrorism is bad. Also, continued investigation of Republican wrong doing is a gift to Republicans, because it shows the Democrats aren't focused on dealing with things that are important to the public, like the war in Iraq. How do I know this true -- because Karl Rove is a genius. His next plan, another hurricane that the Bush administration is not ready to deal with. That will make Bush incredibly popular.

Well, I'm ready to be a pundit. Let's see -- the public opposes both the war in Iraq and public corruption. But, somehow, being seen to do something about those things is bad for Democrats. Next we'll hear is that the election of a Democratic President and bigger Congressional majorities for the Democrats are part of Karl Rove's genius plan to secure a Republican majority. The fact that all the long-term trends are against Rove's strategy working is just even more a part of how much of a genius he is.

This is the letter I just fired off to Jon Weisman:

"Come on Mr. Weisman, are we supposed to swallow once again the Post's penchant for parroting GOP talking points, particularly those that sound suspiciously paranoid - perhaps rife with reverse psychological intent?

This notion that the GOP is "gleeful" over the Democrats attempts to shed light on an administration that heretofore has been unchecked by a complicit congress not only sounds profoundly absurd, it smells of fear and desperation. Does the author for once consider that the democrats may actually have the public on their side? Have you done some basic research? Checked the polling? As I understand, this long overdue campaign to bring back accountability is EXACTLY what the voting public desired last November. That you should propagate the inane logic that these investigations are somehow going to be GOOD for the republicans demonstrates either that you view this story through a partisan lens, or you simply have not the time to back-up your narrative with cold facts.

Respectfully,
Stephen Drunsic"

Greg:
Here is my e-mail to Jonathn of the Post

Jonathan

Your article's headline is freighted with negative connotation. The public does not like the "conflict" in Washington, the public wants their representatives to work together -- to get things done. However, in trying to work together, may be reason for differences, big time. Of course, these disagreements may led one side of the isle to challenge the other, --or the administration. Now to "challenge" the administration is not, to my way of thinking the same as "widening the conflict" unless to "challenge" is see as an inherently "conflicting" act. Of course, ii might be your view that the Democrats are "conflict makers" -- and thus you believe that because they are not waving the "white flag" and asking for "peace" they are "widening the conflict"

What's your view? Words do make a difference. Why the heading "Democrats to Widen..." Why not "Democrats to Challenge"? Why use the term that has a negative connotation? Or are you of
the opinion that "causing conflict" does not have a negative connotation in the voters mind?
I would love to hear your thoughts on this matter.

I wonder if the GOP has ever conducted an opinion poll about Tom DeLay. My informal research led me to conclude that most people identify Tom DeLay as the face of GOP corruption.

I know the public is known to have a short memory but corruption was the main reason why the GOP got thrown out of office.

You wouldn't think the GOP would want Tom DeLay on national television to remind everyone about why they voted Democrat in November 2006.

Go figure.

I think I will add Rep. Tom Cole (R-OK) to my research project. Putnam, Cole - the list is rapidly growing.

Anyone else catch this distinction between Democratic constituents and "the American People?"

This is the kind of rhetoric that will help drive the GOP to the bottom in 2008. This kind of language only appeals to their base, and as we have seen, the base is 25% and shrinking.

Here we go again with the Washington Post saying, in effect, this is where most Americans are, why don't the rest of you get on board too.

It is the Washington Post and the mainsteam media that need to get on board with the American people who don't trust the mainstream media (and rightly so) worth a damn.

Who cares what the talk show hosts and the editorial writers think?

Oh, for a media that would just report the news and then keep their damned opinions to themselves.

Posted by: Schnormal

They used to call this reverse psychology. When you don't want somebody to do something you pretend that you do so they won't do it.

If the Democrats had failed to pass resolutions against the war, the WPO would have been absolutley ecstatic and gleeful. You would never hear the end of how impotent Democrats were, and how dissapointed voters were that they couldn't get their act together. That's their view of Democrats, and what they love to report and have confirmed. But since they did get their act together, all they can do is pretend that's what Republicans wanted, in the desperate hope that they might still convince the Dems to back down and stick to the script.

It's pathetic really, and it only demostrates once again how biased the media elites really are, how much they are still Rove's mouthpiece, and how disconnected they are from the interests of average Americans.

Greg:

Cole was silent on Bush's use of images from the "war on terror" for the president's own political purposes - he was only making public statements attacking Democrats for allegedly doing that. That's why the "quote" of him commenting on Bush's use was blank - he suddenly lost his voice.

It's no change for him - he's always been a party hack. Before running for Congress, he was the Oklahoma Secretary of State (a full-time job) while also running his own GOP political consulting business "full-time." Despite criticism, he continued to draw a full state salary for doing little more than GOP consulting work. He used his position to advance GOP candidates and policies like rating judges according to how business-friendly their decisions were. (Note that the state senator pointing this out, Brad Henry, is now in his second term as Oklahoma's governor, succeeding Keating in 2003.)

The consulting had to end in 2002 because House ethics rules prohibited it, but Cole got back in the game by getting the NRCC gig.

He saves his most virulent rhetoric for when he thinks it won't be reported, then tries to clarify it after the fact when it hits the public. The more you know about Cole, the less reason you have to take anything he says as anything other than pure GOP spin.

Over the past couple of years Jonathan Weisman has proven himself to be: a.) not very bright, b.) lazy and c.) amazingly willing to let the Republicans lead him around by the nose. At least he's not trying to cover economic issues any more. That was REALLY painful.

But in this case I think Weisman may have done the Dems a back-handed favor. To the extent the public is becoming dissatisfied with the Dems in Congress, I think it's because they haven't challenged Bush aggressively enough, or quickly enough, on Iraq. (I realize there are procedural reasons for this, especially given the Dems' narrow Senate majority, but voters are interested in results, not process.) There's no question many base Democrats feel this way.

But now Weisman is offering testimony to the fact that the Dems ARE going to take the fight to Bush any way they can, and are, as Hoyer put it, more worried about not going far enough than going too far.

The Reptiles who are "gleeful" over this ought to remember the famous saying: Be careful what you wish for, because you may get it.

With Bush's approval ratings stuck below 40 percent in recent polls, Lawrimore was asked whether the president feared he'd get booed. "No," she replied. "Certainly not."

to me, throwing in "below 40 percent" as opposed to a much more accurate "low-30's" clearly gives the post the ability to PRINT 40 as opposed to 30 - highly misleading.

This WaPo article illustrates a HUGE disconnect between the enormous size (and velocity) of looming problems, and the ineffectual, spin-driven, mediated, fussy responses of the Beltway.

To offer one example: much of the US economy is driven by tourism (at least, in the West), yet the Beltway legal and political structures favor extractive industries like oil and gas. As global warming, sprawl, and resource scarcity squeeze resources, this disconnect becomes increasingly untenable. Bu$hCheney are literally on the wrong side of every issue related to tourist-based, environmentally sustainable economic activities. Nevertheless, Weisman's article fails to mention a single one of those issues.

The problems that we face are huge, and yet these Beltway Weenies whine about whether airport screeners can unionize? As if this is the most important issue that we face? As if this is worth the commotion of a Presidential Veto?? Bu$hCheney may as well waste our time proclaiming that Saturn is in the House of Taurus. How much more irrelevance can we stomach??!

Bottom line: the true Bu$hCheney believers are in meltdown mode; the more times they take the Fifth, the more ammo they hand the Democrats.

The only power they have left is to persuade the public that the Dem's might 'overreach' -- but the claim reveals their inability to wield power in ways that could address the enormous, urgent issues we face.

Main Street Republicans who once believed in limited government have been in the process of disconnecting from the Repubilcan party since shortly after Abu Gharib, and accelerated the separation after Katrina, Scooter Libby, and Jack Abramoff.

Those people are not susceptible to claims that the Dems might 'overreach.' They want results, and have given up any hope that the Bu$hCheney crowd can offer solutions in any reasonable timeframe. I know life-long Republican's who hold Bush in a state of contempt far beyond what they ever thought of Clinton. Rovian claims that the Dem's might 'overreach' is simply code for 'we'd rather cover our butts than be accountable.' People can spot it readily.

Bu$hCheney = not fixable.
The problem for the rest of us is that we need functioning leadership.
The Dems are the only alternative at the moment. If they don't rise to the occasion, we're lost.

Reason 1,234 why I don't read WaPo or most mainstream papers anymore.
Thankfully, we've folks like Glenn Greenwald and everyone at TPM to combat the sophistry of the modern media.

Regarding the "gleeful" Republicans: Has anyone noticed the tendency of network news correspondents to tell us what, for example, President Bush "believes" and hopes to accomplish instead of just telling us what he says and does? They try to sex things up by certifying the authenticity of the emotions and motivations of people with histories of duplicity. And in doing so they take sides.

It's pretty well confirmed that the Democrats are in their last throes.

Pay no heed to those silly poll numbers. Despite what they consistently and undeniably say, the public overwhelmingly supports Republicans and their policies by a factor of 1 to 2.

If you will...

Greg

Are you still there. HE DID RESPOND... though he defended his article rather than addressing the issues I raised. I will respond to him so that at least he knows that I know he didn't rise up to the challenge I presented him.

On a further note, I have some suggests about how you might use THE HOURSE MOUTH as a forum for accountability by encouraging readers to write directly to journalists (and the editors) giving feed-back on artilces that are not FAIR & BALANCED. You might ask readers to share their responses directly with you and indicate you will have a special post section for the best. This might move some of those who blog from to move away from cathartic outbursts to a more incise mode which might have greater impact.
