Judiciary Chairman Forces 76 Case Per-Day Review Of Judge Sotomayor's Record While Comparing It To Judge Roberts' 6 Case Per-Day Schedule

SEN. PATRICK LEAHY (D-VT):"Now, I mentioned that, madam president, because I've put together a schedule that tracks the process the Senate followed by bipartisan agreement in considering President Bush's nomination of John Roberts to the Supreme Court in 2005." (Sen. Leahy, Floor Remarks, 6/9/09)

Judge Sonia Sotomayor - 76 Cases Per-Day:

· 76 cases per-day: Not including unpublished opinions, legal work, and other writings, Senators and staff must thoroughly review 76 cases per-day in order to be prepared for Judge Sotomayor's hearings.

Judge Sotomayor has decided 3,625 cases to date [as of 5/26/2009] on the Southern District of New York and the Second Circuit. If the hearings begin on July 13, as Sen. Leahy announced today, there would be 48 days between Judge Sotomayor's nomination and the date of her hearing.

Justice John Roberts - 6 Cases Per-Day:

SEN. PATRICK LEAHY (D-VT): "We Need To Consider This Nomination As Thoroughly And Carefully As The American People Deserve. It's Going To Take Time." (Sen. Leahy, Press Conference, 7/19/05)

· 6 cases per-day: During the Roberts nomination, the Judiciary Committee reviewed 327 cases decided by Judge Roberts while on the D.C. Circuit in the 55 days between his nomination announcement and the Judiciary Committee hearing.
