The E-Team: Obama's Economic Braintrust

  |  next

Timothy Geithner

Timothy F. Geithner is Secretary of the Treasury and remains the only confirmed official at the department. He served as president of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York from 2003 to 2009 and has been charged with drafting the bank rescue plan many hope will help contain the financial crisis. Although Geithner has been criticized for his handling of the AIG bonus scandal, Obama said in an interview on 60 Minutes this week that any resignation offer from Geithner would be met with a simple, "Sorry buddy, you've still got the job."

Lawrence Summers

Lawrence H. Summers, director of Obama's National Economic Council, is a long-time Washington veteran and the President's top economic advisor. Known for his free market and de-regulatory approach to the economy, Summers was SOT under President Clinton and went on to serve as President of Harvard University until he was forced to step down after suggesting at a conference that women lacked "natural" ability in math and science. One of Geithner's mentors, Summers is viewed as the driving political force behind Obama's economic policy.

Paul Volcker

Paul Volcker is the chairman of the President's Economic Recovery Advisory Board and tasked with soliciting advice from economists outside Obama's core group of economic advisors. Volcker comes with decades of experience (including Chairman of the Fed from 1979 to 1987) and many have suggested he should have a larger role shaping the economic recovery plan. He has kept a low media profile.

Peter Orszag

As Director of the Office of Management and Budget, Peter Orszag was a driving force behind President Obama's first budget. Orszag spent considerable time on health policy in his two years as director of the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office, and will bring that expertise to President Obama's attempts to expand health care coverage while also reducing the federal deficit.

Christina Romer

Christina Romer chairs the Obama administration's Council of Economic Advisors. Romer, a former professor at UC Berkeley, is an expert on the Great Depression. Republicans recently attempted to use Romer's research on the economic benefits of tax cuts to support their alternative economic recovery plan-- she called their characterization of her work as "flat out wrong."

Jason Furman

Jason Furman is the deputy director of the National Economic Council, and another former Hillary Clinton economic advisor. He joined Obama's team in late 2008 and, like Geithner, is a close Summers' ally. He has been criticized by progressives for his defense of Wal-Mart, but is believed to bring political acumen to the NEC.

Jared Bernstein

Jared Bernstein is the Chief Economist and Economic Policy Advisor to Vice President Joe Biden (and occasional TPMCafe blogger). Bernstein has been an outspoken advocate for unions and serves as the director for the Vice President's Middle Class Task Force. Announcing his appointment in December, Biden called Bernstein a "proven, passionate advocate for raising the incomes of middle class families."

Gene Sperling

Gene Sperling was the head of the National Economic Council under President Bill Clinton - and an advisor to Hillary Clinton's presidential campaign. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner created a position for Sperling to advise him on domestic policy, an area where Geithner has little experience. The delay in official staffing-up at Treasury has elevated Sperling's role in recent weeks.

Cecilia Rouse

Cecilia Rouse, Princeton University professor, sits on the President's Council of Economic Advisors along with Romer and Goolsbee and specializes in labor issues and education. She is expected to be a leading force behind the president's efforts to make education reform a key part of his economic recovery plan.

Austan Goolsbee

Austan Goolsbee has been an advisor to Barack Obama since his 2004 Senate campaign and now serves as both a member of the Council of Economic Advisors and staff director for Volcker's economic board. Much of Goolsbee's academic research has focused on taxation, and as University of Chicago colleague put it, "Anything that comes out of the administration about taxes will have had a good look over by Austan."
