My boycott of the 2008 Beijing Olympics

Reading today about the protest in Olympia (http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/03/24/AR2008032401127.html) I was reminded that some symbolic, individual acts can make a difference (however slight).

So I will boycott the Beijing 2008 Olympics. I am not an athlete. I am just a sports fan. And one thing is for sure, I will not be turning my TV on during the Olympics. A citizen's boycott if you will.

Furthermore, I would be very curious to hear what our candidates have to say about China's appalling record on human rights. And about their respective positions regarding a boycott.

As an addendum, I would like to point to the following press release on RSF (Reporters Without Borders) website:

China does have an appalling record on human rights, both in Tibet and in the Han parts of China. But unfortunately the United States has forfeited its moral authority to point this out. When Americans state the obvious about China, the Chinese government and CCTV simply points out the obvious about Iraq, Guantanamo, torture in secret prisons, the stripping of habeas corpus, and on and on. Congratulations, America, we have squandered out ethical leadership. Until we straighten ourselves out, no one cares what we have to say about China's abuses in Tibet or elsewhere.
