Revised FAQ

1. Why am I sometimes asked to re-enter my password when I try to post a comment?

An account is automatically logged out after an extended period of inactivity. This is because our developers have never heard of the concept of "cookies," and the bakers we hired never heard of javascript.

2. Does html code work in TPM reader blog posts?

It does. However, it doesn't.

3. Can I edit a reader blog post after I've posted it?

No. Our developers are working to make this possible, but in the short run it's best to be perfect, as we expect liberal bloggers to be. You know, you could use a different tool to compose your comments then paste them into your post. Our developers finally figured out how to cut-and-paste, and you're smarter than they are.

4. I just put up a comment but I don't see it there yet. What gives?

Comments may take a minute or two or ten or thirty to appear. We did this to prevent conversation here at TPM Cafe, which we find can sometimes get controversial. We wouldn't want any controversy here. BTW, if your comment doesn't apprear after 30 minutes, god is telling you he doesn't want you blogging today. Try again tomorrow. If that doesn't work, try Daily Kos.

5. It says "latest comments" on my profile, but it actually looks like my oldest comments. Why?

Because we have some wires crossed on our side. We think we know which wires go where, but you know, if we cut the wrong wire, the ensuing explosion could take out most of eastern Virginia, and we're not ready to do that yet.<sweating>Now, was it "red next to yella kill a fella," or was that about snakes?</sweating>

6. My password doesn't work, and when I try to reset it, that doesn't work either. What do I do?

Email us at help at talkingpointsmemo dot com, and we'll do a couple of things that won't work either.

My password finally held, after I had not tried in a couple of weeks.

The conversation now is about as ephemeral as the CNN crawl.

THere is a rump site, a gaggle of refugees, over at Eric Stepp's site, http://projectlucidity.com/

Not clear whether it is a slowly ossifying discussion, or simply idling while waiting for a new opportunity, but we have Pseudocyants, CSCS, Howard, TheraP, Glenn, Chuck, and Emma Z, to mention a few.

Thanks, Tom. I'll take that as an invitation and join you there.

Yes, you're double invited.

This is funny! And your frustration is spot-on, and shared by many.

What was truly lost in this shuffle was the community of people that circled in, out, and around the Cafe. Now it's just a blob of posts and comments. Where connections used to be made, there are none...or maybe "hardly any" is more accurate. There are some people who seem to think this is an improvement. But it seems those are the people who previously didn't blog at the Cafe, and could only comment over at Election Central.

Now, they can blog, too, which seems an improvement.

What's harder to put my finger on, though, is that where it seems like, previously, we used to (not always, but often...) have something more like "conversations," today, it just seems more like shouting.

Two mechanisms add up to encourage a blog post that attracts mainly shouters. One is that a catchy headline is necessary for the post to attract any attention in the couple of hours during which it is visible. And the other is that a post that incites a fght will get the most recommends and comments, a la MJ or LJ.

And without any likely followup conversation, harsh comments go unpunished, and good ones unrewarded. The only pleasure is in hearing (seeing) one's own voice.

Note to Andrew:

This was more an attempt to be a wiseass than actually to pile on. I didn't mean to call you and your people incompetent boobs even if you are.

user-pic

Thanks Tankard, that's reassuring.

And I would never accuse you of piling on.

user-pic

Yeah but the way the site runs now totally deserves piling on. I can't believe I was annoyed with the slowness before... I long for the days of slow comments.
