SC Church Sign "Obama, Osama, hmm..." Causes Controversy
I really think that this article should be featured more prominently. I know there are a lot of uninformed voters out there but this is beyond the pale. This church's campaign is on purpose is not right. A citizen candidate in America should never be smeared like this. Is anyone questioning that Hillary Clinton is a Methodist?
Obama supporters should visit or call this church.

And do what, cause morecontroversy? Seems to me it would be better to just let this one go nationally, and have the Obama camp work with the church locally.

Perhaps a local can replace "Obama" with "Byrd", and "Osama" with "Tyrd".

My favorite church sign (wish I could find the link):
"Jesus loves Osama"

Eric you're right. I was thinking of that right after I posted. It would do more harm than good because the church has already held a meeting about the sign and people calling and showing up would just cause them to dig in even more.

I disagree. Dishonest behavior like theirs needs to have consequences. I feel the bubble these individuals live in should be popped.

I noticed this story last night and it still makes me sick to my stomach to think about it. The sign is bad enough, but then the congregation voted unanimously not to change it....
A quick search last night shows it's getting huge coverage online. Thankfully Drudge has had the story prominently displayed for some time now.
That search also brought up their MySpace page -
http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendid=120080482
Which includes -
"E-mail the church! You can send us your prayer request, comments, questions about what we teach, our services, and much more. jcog71343@yahoo.com We look forward to hearing from you!"
They certainly received some requests and comments from me.
Not mad enough to write? Read this -
"It's simply to cause people to realize and to see what possibly could happen if we were to get someone in there that does not believe in Jesus Christ," (Pastor Roger Byrd) said.
And -
When asked if he believes that Barack Obama is Muslim, Byrd said, "I don't know. See it asks a question: Are they brothers? In other words, is he Muslim ? I don't know. He says he's not. I hope he's not. But I don't know. And it's just something to try to stir people's minds. It was never intended to hurt feelings or to offend anybody."

I wonder what their inbox looks like…

Oh, that page is just for a member of the Church. Maybe she wasn't even there for this unanimous vote. Also, you coulda bloody warned me that the MySpace page would start singing "How Great Thou Art"!

The gender is listed as female (one has to be chosen at sign up), but it really seems to be the church's official MySpace page.
Sorry, Ben. :) I didn't know. I don't go to MySpace without turning the sound off first.

OK, I looked again (with the volume off this time), and you're right. What threw me off was the "25 years old" bit.
I don't visit MySpace often enough to be in the habit of turning off my speaker first. (Although there was an annoying advert on TPM last night that kept making that interminable Windows "system" sound. I was trying to watch Olbermann in one tab, with TPM open in another. I finally just had to close the TPM tab.)

Man, that was an annoying advert. I closed all my applications, and it was still looped. Finally had to shut down my system last night just to stop the beeping.

I would suggest some software but I wouldn't want to cost the folks at TPM some revenue.

Btw, did they respond back to your e-mail? ;)
April 22, 2008 4:12 PM | Reply | Permalink
Nope. I'm shocked! :)
And I just sent off an "Are you going to respond?" message as a test and it bounced. Their (not filled out) Yahoo profile page is still there, so it seems they've either turned off their mail or it's become overloaded. I'm hoping it's the latter.

This is a MySpace link to a church in Jonesville, LOUISIANA!! No wonder the email is blocked, it's the WRONG church.
I think the picture of the cute smiling kids on the page tipped me off. I'm sure the faces of the South Carolina Jonesville church might be a little more sour.

Wait a minute, are you Astral66 or Monkeywrench?
Because, the "RECENT READER POSTS" sidebar has this blog entry as written by Astral66.

My log in is monkeywrench, then my original post is under my blog name Kathy Brown. Should I change the blog to the same name(monkeywrench)?
With all the primary result news who's going to carry the story nationally?
Great post PF, it is dishonest. "We just want people to have a discussion" my a**.

Yes, a fine Christian example they're setting... It's really the more reputable Christian organizations that I feel should go after people these. If I were a member of one of them, I would be pissed. It's things like this that give Christians a bad image in a lot of minds. (Well, that and things like the Crusades...:)

The Inquisition probably didn't help, either.

Wow, if only we had a functioning Federal government or a department that could pursue possible tax code violations..............
Nah, they only go after pro-Obama churches.

What could possibly be wrong with that?

I think I speak for a lot of Clinton supporters when I say that this sign is disgusting. It shows a real lack of intelligence on that community's part.
