Indiana: Obama 48%, Clinton 47% - Research 2000:

My curiosity got the best of me and I had to look around and see if any new polls were out for Indiana.  Since it wasn't listed here, I thought I would post it.

http://www.southbendtribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20080424/NEWS07/284272668/1129/News

Compared to the last Research 2000 poll in Indiana from April 3rd,
Obama 48% (+2)
Clinton 47% (-2)

Obama's had ads running here in north-central Indiana for weeks now.  Today I saw my first Hillary ad.

In Goshen, Indiana, just about 20 miles east-southeast of South Bend, I have seen no Clinton ads in any yards as of yet.  I've seen at least 15 Obama signs across town though.

You live in Indiana? Could you offer up a little more insight to what the mood is there?

Thank you for this post. I have always thought that the numbers would start somewhat even in Indiana. I, too, would like to know how you read the situation in Indiana.

Re: Obama's influence in Indiana, I stumbled across this mention in the Swamp (which is, apparently, the Chicago Tribune's Washington Bureau): http://www.swamppolitics.com/news/politics/blog/2008/04/obama_in_chicago_speaks_to_in.html

It was the latest example of Obama's home field advantage in Indiana, where the May 6 primary is viewed as a critical test for him and Sen. Hillary Clinton in their marathon for the Democratic nomination.

A fifth of that state's Democratic voters live in the Chicago media market, meaning they will likely see extensive coverage of Obama's appearance on their evening news.

So if you follow the assumption that lack of recognition and unfamiliarity has been his biggest campaign weakness, that 20% of the Democratic electorate is HUGE.

I can't make a real fair judgment of the electorate around here but I can try.

Looking at the SurveyUSA polls' crosstabs, what I suspected is happening.

Obama is doing well in Northern Indiana and in Indianapolis but in Southern Indiana he isn't doing too well since it is near Kentucky where he is having a very difficult time. Southern Indiana you'll find they are a lot like Kentucky down there.

Indianapolis will be a place he'll find a lot of support and I think in north-central and the north-west tip of Indiana he will do pretty well.

The city I live in is way more Republican than I can stomach a lot of Mennonites (liberal Christians). There are a lot of Hispanics here as well. Having a Democratic mayor is almost a fluke. Everything here has its influence of the GOP, just as the rest of the area here, until you get over by South Bend.

I still can't believe how many Obama signs I see around town. I've seen no Hillary signs and I don't know why. Maybe its just because she don't have an office here in Goshen or something. Obama does, which surprises me too. Lots of grassroots going on here. More and more signs popping up all the time.

I'm used to only being around the non-voters and GOP type people.... One complained we were watching Communist news when CNN was on at a restaurant. I'm anti-social, somewhat so I don't talk to many people.

To me, the whole race is up in the air. If you got rid of Southern Indiana, Obama wins pretty big. If you get rid of Indianapolis, Obama loses kinda big. If you get rid of all of Northern Indiana, Obama's toast. Its too close right now.

If Obama comes out and talks some anti-Mitch (our governor), Hillary would have to do the same or she loses. He leased our toll road to a foreign country. That ran through northern IN and we aren't too happy about that. He changed our time to DST and we didn't care for all that here.

Obama & the Clintons get insane media coverage when they come, and the Clintons are around here every couple of days.

Our newspaper has a couple of stories in it, "Local women show their support for Hillary Clinton". So much for being fair and balanced.... and
"Obama wraps up day with hoops" where he was in Kokomo.
