Michelle's Colbert appearance was excellent
As anyone who watches at all knows, it isn't every guest that spars well with Colbert on his show.
Michelle just had possibly the most important appearance of anyone ever on the show.
Her demeanor and responses were exceptional, not to be missed - she was pretty unflappable.
I'm sure parts of it will be on the news channels

I'm glad to hear it. Every word is scrutinized at this point, any appearance is an opportunity for disaster.

I very much enjoyed her appearance. She showed a sense of humor (re: Barack's ears), she was charming and positive (yes, we can!) and when I heard Colbert say he thought she could be the next Jackie, I kinda believed it. Well done, soon-to-be-madame-First-Lady. Well done.

Yeah, I thought she came across really well too, though she was definitely in 'don't say anything controversial' mode. She's a good ambassador for Obama, though i think it's a little cowardly of him to send his wife when he's too scared to be interviewed himself!

I'm not as breathless over her appearance as you, but it was good. I would've liked to see her slip some more substantive comments in there, have it be one of Colbert's more discussion-style interviews instead of punchline-guest response, punchline-guest response. That said, I think she was likely a little nervous -- speaking to huge crowds is one thing, but appearing in a focused format on (inter)national TV is another beast entirely.

I thought Michelle was sharp and clever, but I too thought she was pretty restrained... I imagine at this point she is very reluctant to say anything too exceptional that could turn into the latest PR disaster

Perhaps he meant her appearance, literally.

Yes, she was more reserved than usual, but i could just see any spontaneous utterance being a HUGE HEADLINE splayed across the top of the HuffPost and Dowd's column. Out of context, of course, but that's the way it is now.
It's too bad that this very bright, energetic, enthusiastic and accomplished woman has to "flatten" herself out, but this is the fruit of mindless "reporting" and "journalism."

I was somewhat surprised he didn't bring up her statement about being proud "for the first time", since that would be in line with his "character". I'm glad he didn't, but a little surprised. I guess either (a) he wanted to avoid the awkwardness, and/or (b) it was a precondition to her appearing on the show that it not be brought up.

You know the part when they were showing the kid drawings and they showed one of the drawings depicting lady liberty. I think that drawing was suppose to be Michelle even though Colbert had described it as image that would show Barack Obama's patriotism. So I agree with you that there probably was some precondition set.
April 16, 2008 10:37 AM | Reply | Permalink
Actually, I think it probably was meant to be Obama. I suspect that most kids don't know that The Statue of Liberty is a "lady".

OK, I admit it. I'm totally "in the tank" for Michelle Obama. Knock her all you like, parse her public statements til your heart is content. This lady is what susan b. anthony took all those punches for. Elegant toughness, and unshakeable poise. Obama has one hell of a wingman (or woman, as you like it)

Yep.
Sad how HuffPo and Dowd have to be mentioned in the same sentence now.

Thanks for the link. I like her quote:
“Many women like myself who are independent, strong, focused, who care about family values, who know that Barack is special, that he has something unique to offer the country, and that his perspective is really gonna change the lives of working women, he understands because he’s living with me,” Mrs. Obama said.

She seems a bit more serious and reserved than her husband but she is just about the sharpest and most quick-witted First Lady the White House will ever see (next to William J, if that is how it turns out)

Well, Colbert was on fire. He was hysterical. And he wasn't doing his character. Frankly I think he was too distracted.
I agree she was more serious and reserved than she had to be but given the environment I can understand why.

So often, Colbert plays the clown and dominates the interview. This time he really showed some respect and let the focus be on the potential First Lady. And yes, she looked hot in that blue dress. When's the last time we had a First Lady that you could say that about? Jackie O?

Colbert's been excellent and hilarious for the past couple weeks, hie Larry King interview will be another classic, and the Chris Matthews segment may have future poltiical implications.
But the Michelle Obama segment was about the classiest of them all, and anyone who can spin it negatively needs to get spanked for partisanship.
Regardless of who you support, if you are willking to overcome your own partisan prejudice, you have to acknowledge Michelle Obama's one classy lady, and a powerful woman, and a real person, all in one.
There's wher the likes of Dowd can't touch her, with anything but a poison pen, because she's all three of those at once, and Maureen's, at best, only one of those.
I would wager Michelle could give her a run for her money at the writing game, too, if she had gone in that direction.
As for lumping the Huffpost in with Dowd, please, the Huffington Post represents so many bloggers of varying degrees of authority and opinion, you can't categorize it.
Arriana herself has been very fair to all parties, but some of her bloggers have displayed a partisan desperation, especially of late. So I just don't see how Huffpost can be so easily labeled partisan.
As for Dowd, well, the "mean girls"class of pundits probably doesn't care what we think of them in the first place. Or they wouldn't be where they are today.

I was very disappointed in Mrs. Obama's performance.
I had so hoped that she would have put all those elitist claims to rest by downing at least two boilermakers and shot a couple of ducks.

Here's an experiment in image management...
Put Michelle Obama and Mrs. McCain on stage together, and you might think you were watching a beauty contest.
Then throw Barack and Johnny up there with them, and you would probably be scratching your head for a moment, trying to go figure how that goffy little pasty-faced fellow managed to get on the same stage with the other three.
Being an old, fuzzy hippy myself, I'm not one for judging people by their appearance, and I am not trying to enable McFlounder's "anti-elite" pose, but in this case, you have to chuckle at who's the obvious the oddball in that group of lookers.

Yes I agree. Ms.Obama is classy and intelligent, what a nice change it will be to have her as the First Lady.

Just to amplify what's been said: Michelle Obama looked TERRIFIC. That elegant blue dress, her charm, her smile, those gorgeous long legs...no wonder Colbert started singing to her. Barack, charismatic though he is, is clearly an overachiever.
I too thought she stayed on message a bit more than I would have liked, but I wouldn't take chances at this point either.
BTW Just a quibbe w/Colbert: Philadelphia is not the only city in PA, or even the only city with major sports teams, as his all-purpose sports jersey would suggest. Although we in the west do appareciate (somewhat) the Terry Bradshaw head on his state map.

There's no doubt there will be some who will pick apart bits of this and skew it way out of context, I'm sure some already are; but I bet this will be seen by a larger audience than any other Colbert Report to date.

Michelle Obama is a brilliant woman. If you've heard her stump speech, then you know she's an excellent speaker -- maybe even be better than Barack.
With that said, it's most unfortunate and petty, that comments made by both Barack and Michelle have been distorted and twisted so throughly .
One time, John McCaveman said, "I will follow Osama bin Laden to the gates of hell".
If the press had treated McCaveman the same way as the Obamas, the questions based on that particular statement would have been:
"So, You're a follower of Osama Bin Laden?"
"So, You plan to go to hell?"
"So, are you saying hell has a gate, and not a door? How dare you!"

But, the day is young...It's not like I'm fishing for some trash-talk here, but honestly, when was the last time we got this far along on an Obama thread of any kind without one of Hill's future unpaid staffers joining the fray and downtalking the Obama enthusiasm?

CALLING ALL FELLOW OBAMA SUPPORTERS:
Last night I came to the conclusion that it will be up to us to counter the Republican 527 adds (Swift Boats) if the Democratic party is not up to the task. These attacks have to come from the party or us-NOT Obama. he has to stay clean while we do this awful dirty work for him. Kerry's swift Boating proved that these attacks cannot be ignored.
I really believe we can make the difference when the Repubs start coming after Obama and Michelle.
But lets start now!
Who knows how to get in touch with anyone associated with a 527 organization. I think if we could run this "Screw Them" piece on video from now until the primary next Tuesday we just might be able to finish Hillary off. If Obama could beat her in Pa this would be over!
I REALLY HOPE SOMEONE CAN RESPOND TO THIS!
