WSJ Breaking Story : The Democrats Have a Nominee !

The Democrats Have a Nominee
April 24, 2008; Page A11

So what?

Other than ensuring the Greatest Show on Earth will continue, does it matter that Hillary Clinton defeated Barack Obama Tuesday in Pennsylvania by nine-plus points? Barack Obama is the nominee.

No matter how many kicks the rest of us find in such famously fun primary states as Indiana and South Dakota, it's going to be McCain versus Obama in 2008.

I believe the cement set around the Clinton coffin last Friday. The Obama campaign announced it had received the support of former Sens. Sam Nunn of Georgia and David Boren of Oklahoma.

Both are what some of us nostalgically call Serious Democrats. They represent what the party was, but is no more: sensible on national security, spending and middle-class values. Obama receiving their imprimatur is like hands reaching out from the graves of FDR, JFK and LBJ to announce: "Enough is enough. This man is your nominee. Go forth and fight with the Republicans." Make no mistake: Superdelegates with sway took notice.

Time to let this play out, ignore the negative rhetoric, let the numbers do the talking and the walking, and stop worrying about how this is going to hurt the party. That is a bunch of media bullshit. I am absolutely convinced that the anti-Obamatons on most left wing websites are wingnut trolls who don't support Hillary but are playing games to create a media or pseudo-media narrative about Obama, Hillary and the Democratic party that is decidedly negative.

Shortly after the Democratic convention in 1988, Michael Dukakis was 15+ points ahead of George HW Bush. He lost by 5+, if memory servies. The GOP is going down this year, no matter what polls say 6 months before, or even 3 months before, and no matter who wins the nomination and no matter how ugly it gets. It would be better to end this, and start the healing, to be sure, but its a great race and notwithstanding the mainstream media and right wing chatter, the vast majority of Clinton supporters I know are going to support Obama as the nominee with enthusiasm. There is no way McCain ducks responsibility for this GOP controlled nightmare of the last 7 years. Wingnuts like to think the election is going to be abut Jeremiah Wright and the notion thatt, between McCain and Obama, Obama is the Elitist -- but really the campaign is going to be about economic meltdown, the must fucked up war in American history, the most corrupt administration in American history, the absolute rape of the Federal treasury by large shadowy multinational corporate interests (tied to the Bush family and Dick Cheney and their cabal of close friends and lifetime advisors and supporters) and John McCain's complicity in almost all of it.

Revel in the beauty of two wonderful and formidable candidates going to battle. This is the real Presidential election. The one in November is going to be a landslide.
