A Preview of Coming Attractions: McPocrisy

Lumped together with Bush on an irresponsible foreign policy. Subjected to a withering speech by Obama. Embarrassed by his own statements that he'd deal with Hamas.  How could this news cycle get any worse for McCain?

Well,
How about getting booed at an NRA meeting?  McCain will be speaking at the National Rifle Association of America annual meeting in Louisville, KY, today at 4:30.  I'm hoping the microphones will pick up the sound of P.O.'d gun nuts.  Even if he does get a polite reception, prepare for him to say something foolish about gun rights that will directly contradict statements he made in the past.

The McCain candidacy is a gift from heaven.  The man's path to the White House essentially is one long minefield--he has to navigate between an skeptical & unenthusiastic base and an appalled anti-Bush public.  And every time he has to pander to the base, they guy gets tinier and tinier...

Call it... McPocrisy?

Love your term!

McShame on McPocrisy!

Yeah, I agree. The guy is in an awkward corner, because his party is schizo. A large part of it still wants the kind of fear-mongering nationalism they've been fed for eight years. But most of the country has learned to be disgusted by that diet. Difficult path to walk.

Jumping on Bush's bandwagon yesterday, however, was an unforced error. Why tie yourself to Bush's brand more than you have to?

I'm not sure McCain is all that smart.

"McPocrisy" is a good term, especially when compared to the inspirational approach of "Barackracy." I can hear the chants now...

To be fair, though, not every NRA member is a "gun nut." The majority of gun owners that I know are both safe and responsible. I don't always agree with the NRA politically, but the rank and file are not best embodied by the late Charlton Heston.

That's fair, but at some point the NRA has to be defined not by its rank-and-file so much as by what its leadership stands for and what they advocate for politically... most of which is pretty nutty. And it's the razz-worthy leadership that's in Louisville today.
