HILLARY RAISES ASSASSINATION ISSUE
In the most clear sign that Hillary has begun to loose her bearings. In an Editorial Board meeting to day...
Hillary Clinton's argument for staying in the race took a disturbing turn today. While meeting with the editorial board of South Dakota's Sioux Falls Argus-Leader, she raised the specter of assassination while discussing why she would stay in the race:

"My husband did not wrap up the nomination in 1992 until he won the California primary somewhere in the middle of June, right? We all remember Bobby Kennedy was assassinated in June in California. I don't understand it."

That is so wrong. She's done.

It must be an official Clinton Camp talking point because her money man surrogate also touched on the potential -

We must have been typing at the same time, as I just posted the same story. She really is a piece of work. I don't quite understand how superdelegates can even think of supporting such an abscess of humanity.

She's right though. And the Secret Service is awesome. 75k in PDX. I only saw them checking bags at the entry, but obviously they had shit handled thoroughly. Call me cynical, but he owes them big time...

Dear fanatical white working class/radical feminist supporter, all that needs to happen is somebody take out that African America Muslim Sexist Obama and your fearless leader will be president. Either now or after I force my way into being his VP - whenever is good for you...

Let's not blow this too far out of proportion. In the context of her statement, she was talking about not leaving the race in June, citing two examples of those who stayed in, her husband in 1992 and RFK in 1968. She did not mention Obama anywhere in that statement, so it might as aptly applied to her.
I hate defending her, but this is a reach, IMHO.

You're reaching. She was saying that should Obama get assassinated that by her still remaining in the race she'd be the defacto nomination at that point.

Sorry, Jonez. You're right. See my comment a little further down. I withdraw my benefit of the doubt.

MSNBC is covering it and Clinton just had to apologize in a quickly thrown together press conference. My opinion is that she certainly wasn't calling for anything to happen to Obama but that she is trying to say "anything can happen".
May 23, 2008 4:52 PM | Reply | Permalink
Nope. She apologized for dragging the Kennedy name into the discussion, NOT for hinting (accidentally) that Obama might get assassinated.

Her "explanation" is so lame. So lame!
May 23, 2008 5:50 PM | Reply | Permalink
Okay, maybe I gave her too much credit. Shit. Hate it when that happens! Taken with the Nemazee quote Jonez put up and her push for the veep slot, it DOES seem like a suggestion to put her on the ticket "just in case" someone offs Obama.
You all were right. This bitch is toast.

It is called decorum. Barack has Secret Service protection because of threats.Hillary is not stupid. This comes in a LONG line of FEAR tactics her campaign has used with voters and SD... Do I need to list them all ?It is sick! She has not sense of limits...I expect her to be on a hunger strike until the delegates from FLA and MI are seated. How her supporters and support these kinds of tactics are beyond me. She is doing MORE to HURT other women's prospects to run for the Presidency again.. She is behaving like and love struck girl who has been dumped ! I expect her to start cutting up Baracks photos !!

Ms. Ciara,
You are SPOT ON!

I hate to say this, but I wouldn't put ANYTHING past her. She seems to think she can behave anyway she pleases without consequences.
It's time for her to get out. This latest statement of hers is UNACCEPTABLE!!!!!!

Upon further reflection, I totally agree and (this is no snark) I believe she should be removed from the Senate. Not censured. Thrown out.

Arianna said it today: It's time for the superdelegates to grow themselves some, and end this embarrassment.
Hillary can't bring herself to admit defeat, so it's up to the party's "leaders" to shut her down.
Thankfully, people like California's Cardoza are answering the challenge, threatening to defect her camp en masse.
Hillary doesn't even have to withdraw, just "suspend" her campaign.
Then, if she's lucky enough that somebody actually does murder the Democratic nominee, she can offer herself once again.
But, Hillary, please realize: This argument for staying in is NOT a winner.
The SDs are NOT going to be impressed.
Nor are ordinary voters in the remaining primary states.
I see Wolfson is already trying to do damage control, but I don't see any way to spin this as being taken out of context.
If the Democratic SDs don't take this gaffe as a green light to shut the Clintons down, they are the cowards that the Republicans always accuse them of being.
As Arianna says: End it NOW!

$10.00 says she's going to try and spin thin into her being the victim of the big bad media taking her out of context and that it's a vast MSM conspiracy to keep her out of the White House.
She'll probably be tearing up because some would even believe she could have possibly meant what she is being accused of...

Wel, she had the opportunity with the first prss conference, but all she apologized for was evoking the Kennedy name, NOT hinting that Obama might get offed. This isn't quite as blatant as her Bosnia thing, but its certainly more offensive, at least to me. She will need to spin a great deal to defuse this remark AFTER both her campaign defended it AND she apologized only for evoking the Kennedy name.

This is 1 million times more blatant than the Bosnia lie!!

I know I saw it..It was like he was not even an issue in the conversation. She is really too much.; I am so tired of the Clinton's.Well the Good news is this will end all the VP talk? Barack would have to be a out of his mind to put her on the ticket.

Okay, I didn't like her explanation either. But take a deep breath and think about PR for a sec.
If she goes on tape and says "OMG I didn't mean Barack, I'm horrified that anyone would suggest I was predicting Barack would be assassinated" -- the problem with that is that she is now talking about it. She's on tape talking about the assassination of her rival. And there is no way that can look good -- not even as an apology. It would make us feel a lot better, but it would make the other 99% of the American people look up from their mashed potatoes and say "What? What did she just say?"
That's why she made it about the Kennedys and just about them.
Don't everyone kill me at once, or throw me out of the Senate. I'm not sure what I think about this yet. I'm just saying, that's why the apology has to be so lame.

I know, I know. But you know how sensitive the assassination issue is. Geez, this is just wrong coming from a U.S Senator!
I just keep coming back to the "October surprise" she and her surrogates keep referring to. Maybe, they hope that "surprise" happens in June?
Sorry, everything the Clinton's do is calculated.
This woman can NEVER be president. Assassinations, obliterating Iran....what next?!

You're right, Alex, that she never mentioned Obama by name.
So indeed it would do her no good to apologize to Obama for even hinting at the assassination of a would-be presidential candidate.
But that's her problem: this year, there's only one rival in the race, and it's Obama.
The outrage expressed here -- and just about everywhere -- is over the spectre she raised, not over the insult and hurt to the Kennedy family.
Which is what she chose to "clarify" (it wasn't even a real apology.
Look at the context: she was being asked about the pressure for her to concede, and why she thought it premature.
And she brings up the date of Robert Kennedy's assassination?
Her apology is "so lame" because the remark -- and the thinking behind it -- were simply indefensible.

And....why isn't she apologizing to Barack?
Does she hate him that much?!?!

While I'm not a Hillary fan to put it in mild terms, the entire episode has been blown out of proportions to make sure the VP slot is kept out of her reach.
It was distasteful an inappropriate use of words, no arguments. Also, her reluctance for a honest apology pisses me off.
But I don't believe everyone who's up and arms about it are as appalled as they appear considering the context on all three occassions.
Also, while this issue is being exploited to keep Hillary at bay I'm not sure it will work. Clintons will turn every stone in every corner to sneak through.
I don't want her to be on the ticket, by the way. But there'll be negative effects if this episode is overplayed.
