McCain & Co are going to replay 2004

Xenophobia and false patriotism.  They're lining up for it again.  They're goose-stepping right up to that line.

The first shots have been fired and there will be many, many more to come.  It is going to get disgusting.  It is going to get very, very ugly.

Fortunately, it appears that we have enough momentum to overcome it this time.  And I have some hope that finally enough people will open their eyes to this nonsense that we can really make a difference.  My infallible cynicism is at risk here :)

But wait... maybe it isn't.  As sure as the sun will set tomorrow, when the Dems get the Presidency & a vast majority in Congress the temptation to go right back to '92 will be immense.  It will take one hell of a strong Prez to make sure that doesn't happen.  At this point I think Obama is strong enough.  He may disappoint, though.

And to think I used to have a decent opinion of Mr. McCain.

Yes, I'm quite sad...I never had a very high opinion of Clinton, but it seems that McCain is going to crater in my eyes exponentially faster than Clinton's did.

I believe McCain has a valid point (talking does not solve all our problems) but wholeheartedly adopting the Bush foreign policy position scares the crap out of me. McCain more than any other politician could have really sold the iron gauntlet under a silk glove (the one that Obama seems to beholding) position, but he's chosen otherwise.

At least Bush declared Mission Accomplished when it seemed like the war was won, not preemptively 5 years before the fact.

Except that no one is claiming that talking does solve all our problems. It's just one extra tool in our toolbox—a toolbox that Bush seems to think contains only a hammer. Talking can be a starting point. It can be a means to get our allies behind us or to to get our enemies to respect us. It doesn't always solve our problems, but that doesn't mean it never does. Of course, talking needs to always be followed through with action when necessary, although that action can also be quite varied. I think if we gave Bush a screwdriver, he'd use the handle to try to pound a few more nails into that board.
