This looks like an exciting story but it's kind of weird that Reuters doesn't know when or where he made the appeal--nor does it seem like they contacted his campaign to find out.

The state department may have been using him quietly as part of a diplomatic effort, like they did in the Kenya conflict. I hope there is some followup reporting on this.
