DNC needs us - please go contrinute today.

As you probably already know, our new leader of the Democratic Party - soon to be President Obama - has boldly set a new policy for DNC fundraising. Specifically, he says the DNC will no longer accept PAC or lobbyist money.

The good news: DNC-funded politicians, similarly to Obama himself, will now more firmly belong to us instead of special interest groups or big business.

The cost: We now need to put our money where our mouths are. Howard Dean has recently sent out an e-mail calling on us, private citizens, to fully fund this new way of doing business in Washington. Please, if you have a few dollars to spare, and are so inclined, speak your political mind outside the realm of TPM by donating today. Help prove to the DNC leadership and all our fellow Americans that Obama's new way of funding politics is not only viable, but correct.

Please recommend this shameless appeal so that it can remain visible as long as possible to the most readers we can get.

Many thanks.

Text of Dean's e-mail:

Dear (Name Removed To Protect The Guilty ;)),

I wanted to drop you a quick note about a major policy change here at the Democratic Party.

As we move toward the general election, the Democratic Party has to be the Party of ordinary Americans, not Washington lobbyists and special interests. So, as of this morning, if you're a federal lobbyist, or if you control political action committee donations, we won't be accepting your contribution.

This is an unprecedented move for a political party to make -- one that has sent shockwaves through Washington and has turned the debate on clean campaigns upside down. We've unilaterally agreed to shut lobbyists out of the process, and are we're relying on people just like you.

Just imagine what hundreds of thousands of Americans donating $20, $30, or $50 at a time can accomplish together. Imagine the signal that it sends to anyone who looks at John McCain's political machine and the special interest money it needs to fuel every move it makes.

We have a chance to change the way business is done in this country, and we're taking the lead. Will you join us and make a contribution right now to help us elect Barack Obama?

http://www.democrats.org/nonlobbyists

I've written before about guys like Charlie Black and Rick Davis, lobbyists who are at the highest levels of McCain's campaign. But they're just the start -- John McCain and the RNC suck up lobbyist money millions of dollars at a time.

In May, McCain had his best fundraising month of the campaign, and it was directly because he refuses to shut special interests out.

But we did, and we need your help. This is an example of the kind of White House Barack Obama would run. Make a contribution to help elect him:

I'll be in touch later about our plans for the general election, but I wanted to let you know about our policy change right away.

Thanks,

Howard Dean

My soul for an editing function. "Contribute".

See also Llora's post from earlier today:

There are 60,000 lobbyists in D.C. The DNC needs lots of help.

Thanks for the link. And if you see this, thank you Llora - impressed by your courage.

Just sent a contribution. Thanks for the reminder. We have to also start worrying about downticket to get Obama more help in Congress. I refused to give DNC another penny until I saw how Dean handled all this. He won my support.

When I get mail from any of those acrimonious acronyms I sent back the envelope with hate mail railing away about Roberts, Alito, Feinstein, Mukasey, Schumer, etc.

Lately I've been starting by saying I'm a fan of Dean and the 50 state strategy before launching into a diatribe about how Chuck Schumer should be drawn and quartered for getting all those photo-op soundbytes lacerating Gonzales only to make a sleazeball backroom deal to replace him with someone much worse.

I guess Schumer is DSCC not DNC, but I want DNC to get the idea that they're being punished as well for Schumer, Rahm, Feinstein, Salazar and the rest of those DINO bastards.

Fair enough.

Can you think of any way we could get a DNC contrib out of you that wouldn't violate your principles? I'm struggling to think of one, but so far falling short.

Maybe ask if you can make a contribution that specifically will not go to Schumer, et all? Even if DNC says no, you've at least managed to register your displeasure on some level.

Or perhaps a protest check. $97 - Include in the message it's a dollar for each Senator, minus Schumer, Feinstein & Salazar (and any others you should exclude).

Just contrinuted. Feels good!

Thankse for yore suport.

P.S. Sorry about the spelling error, Ripper. You made my fiancee laugh, at least.

Three cheers that Dean, Obama and DNC showed leadership in a new direction. I will dig deeper, and if satisfied there's no and, but or if, I'll be sending a check as an Independent.

Here's hoping this really means something about the direction Democratic policy is headed and is more than just a short-term play for image-advantage against McCain and Republicans in the upcoming election.

This will be even more meaningful, if after the election, Obama and Dean lead voters and the Congress to carve in legal stone that the tragedy of the special-interest-commons will not continue to play out to its bitter end here in the United States.

What a real change Obama and Dean will have delivered if we no longer have to watch American "leaders" cower to donors who subjugate them to do things that are not in the best interests of this country! Perhaps Obama and Dean see that such stupidity is a lose-lose and it not only reduces the strength of the country and their status as leaders, it's unnecessary.

I will jump for joy if this is the beginning of some brilliant, home-run strategy that soars right over the heads of any delinquents that have been lurking in and about our Congress for far too long.

Love you big time Logico! Thanks for helping, as an Independent! Means a lot! Really.

Well put, madam/sir.

I gave earlier today, when I got the same e-mail. Great post, good idea.

Check this out - we need to move from Hillary to John (why "Barak"and "Hillary", but never "John"?)now....

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/ari-melber/mccain-launches-new-blog_b_105782.html

I think we should refer to him as John III, or John McCain III... because he IS, and it's ridiculous that the son and grandson of Navy admirals, who married wealth, is putting himself forth as common guy, as opposed to the guy who was raised by a single mother.

I like it.

The DNC will not see another penny from me. I'm through throwing good money after bad to the idiot, Dean. My donations will go to individual candidates only.

I *love* that the DNC is doing this--the very effort gives them incredible moral highground. I've already hopped over to their site and given them $25, and will donate again as I see how well they continue on this path. In the meantime, I'll just eat a few more peanut butter & jelly sandwiches to make up the difference!

OK, I've given before and I'll give again. I also try to remember the DCCC and the DSCC. After all, the House and Senate members are most directly vulnerable to lobbyists. We say they shouldn't take the money, but up until now, we haven't given them another source. If a lot of people gave $25 to each, it would go a long way. Pelosi is a magician about where to spend the bucks to empower her democratic House seats and Reid's no slouch either. Like any party, we sometimes end up with democratic reps and senators who aren't ideal, but if they vote with the party (which they darn well better or no committees or re-election) they're still better then the republicans. The repubs have stuck together to an unprecedented degree in the past months in their successful efforts to prevent any useful work being done. With the Senate divided 50/50, Lieberman's independent vote that caucuses with us makes the difference. That's why we put up with his shenanigans. He's voted with the dems on everything except the war and he's been needed. But boy oh boy, it sure will be nice if we can pick up some extra senate seats this time. If we could experience magic and get 60, we'd be fillibuster free!

Karela,

Many thanks for your support.

I cannot in good conscience contribute to the Democratic Party, whose leaders are nothing more than plutocrats. They have steadfastly supported Bush/Cheney.

I am wondering if now, perhaps for the first time we can remember, this policy enables us to once and for all attack and end the very root of the plutocracy you abhor?

Is there any advantage in continuing to contribute to Obama rather than the DNC? Does that give any him additional leverage in dealing with the old-line party?

user-pic

Like I did with the Dean Machine in 2004, I'll click the $10 a month button for the DNC for now, then add another $25 every now and then to the Obama campaign, as the requests warrant it.

The DNC's 50-State Strategy is at the core of our potential 50-State Landslide (thank you, Rush for blurting that one out in one of your dopey arguments.) With all the recent news about Bush and Cheney lying through their teeth about war intel, this will be a hard year for the R's, in every quarter.

Also, looks like I'm going to have to pony up another $25 to the DCCC because I promised to do so once the nominee was picked and finalized. That comes from limited resources, hopefully my mites will encourage the other 1,499,999 Obama contributors who are also helping to put the upper class Bush base to shame.

Gonna be a busy day online.

Thanks JEP07!

No thanks Howard. I will give to Obama but not a dime to the DNC.

Democrats promised "change" in 2006 and many people like myself took them at their word and rewarded them with our vote. In return we were rewarded with the most shameful and gutless performance imaginable. Opportunities to shut down the war, wire tapping, patriot act, the list goes on and on not to mention the unilateral decesion to take impeachment off the table.

My friend, I look forward to an Obama presidency,
and will support him in any way I can, but if you or any one else thinks that I am going to support the likes of Harry Ried, or Nancy Pelosi
after the pathetic performance of the Democrats in this session of congress you are very much mistaken.

Well, fair enough.

I have no doubt of your committment to President Obama. Though I should respectfully point out the position you have described does not fully support him in every way you can, because he has directly called on us to donate to the DNC.

More than just monetary support of Reid and Pelosi (which undeniably your $$$ would be), our contributions, or lack thereof, do on some level serve as referendum on the viability of the very politicoeconomic model that is the hallmark of Obamanomics. Basically, by adopting his fundraisinig policies, the DNC is saying "Okay, Obama, we'll try it your way."

The success or failure of 'his way', now rests squarely on our shoulders (and wallets) and ours alone. If you can see past your disdain for Reid and Pelosi (which I can fully appreciate) and instead focus on the bigger prize - namely that Obama is trying here to change the entire way the game is played, do you think you might be willing to send in a few bucks? Anything would help.

Thanks!

I just donated to the DNC, and will continue to do so as much as possible (along with donating to Obama).

I was waiting to make a donation until Hillary conceded -- just to be sure she wasn't going to take it to the convention.

She gave a beautiful and unifying speech today, and I applaud her. Bravo Hillary!

GOBAMA!!!!

JennieB,

Many thanks!

I hope you'll rethink your position on the DNC. It's a new day and the DNC is officially under new rule -- Barack Obama. He's trying to clean things up and curtail the lobbyist's influence, but he can't do it without our help.

Just give it some thought.
