How George Carlin Aided and Abetted the Republicans
Think of how stupid the average person is and realize that half of them are stupider than that.--- George Carlin
Enough said.
Despite your contribution to Republican pedagogy, we love you and will miss you, George.

That's a gorgeous quote.
Oh shit. Wonder which half I'm in?

What a wierd title. Otherwise, right there with 'ya.

The title comes from the Republicans' affinity to play to the ignorance of the American public and Carlin's keen observation of that same stupidity.

Well, that clears it up.

In honor of George Carlin, Steven Colbert tonight said, "Motherfucker."
And at least on the channel I watch, it didn't get bleeped.
I hope George had the foresight to order a seven-word inscription for his tombstone.

Ah...Colbert. Love that Motherfucker. And Carlin, too.
Thanks, Aubie.

Here's my problem with George Carlin - he didn't vote.
I don't appreciate criticism from people who don't bother to try to make things better and you can't tell me that refusing to vote makes anything better.
And rather like Glenn Greenwald, Carlin bitched constantly about America and yet never took advantage of the one thing that this government gives us to do that has any direct bearing on what happens here - voting.
I don't have any kind of respect for an American who refuses to vote. I just don't.

I've loved George Carlin ever since seeing him on Johnny Carson when I was little, but I agree with you on the voting thing.
I prefer Frank Zappa's stance. On the back of every FZ album, he had clear as day: "Don't forget to register to vote."

I loved the early Carlin. He was a genius.
The later Carlin got very tedious - all his comedy specials on HBO were just gross comedy in later life and you can get better from the average 5 year old.
I was sorry to see it happen because he was so fucking brilliant when he was younger.

On re-releases of some of his albums (e.g., Mothers Live) that admonition was shortened to, "Don't forget to vote." I had begun to wonder if my memory of the register part was just a hallucination.
Thanks for the anti-revisionist reminder!

Voting is not the only way to try to make things better. More effective are things like making a campaign contribution and speaking out publicly against stupidity. Your postings here, Tena, are a more valuable contribution than your solitary vote.
Deification of voting is a bit dogmatic and lacks a sense of proportion. I sympathize with Carlin's cynical observation that voting only encourages them (politicians), though I myself am not quite that cynical.
With his wit, George Carlin has done more to make things better than either you or I have done by merely voting.
