James Dobson's Radical UnChristianity

James Dobson says Barack Obama doesn't understand the Bible. He's wrong and you can match Dobson's statements against those of Obama at jamesdobsondoesn'tspeakforme.com, a web site started by a group of theologians including the Rev. Kirbyjon Caldwell, a Methodist minister from Texas and longtime supporter of President Bush who has endorsed Obama.

What angers me most about Dobson is the same thing that angers me about every self-righteously pious jerk whose real agenda is supporting the Republican Party: He claims to know God's will better than the rest of us. And that, of course, means the rest of us should shut up, sit down and let him run our world.

Dobson's misunderstanding of the Bible strikes at the very core of Christianity and identifies him as distinctly un-Christian. His reckoning of the faith bears little resemblance to the one founded by the humble Nazarean who washed the feet of the tax collector, found worth in the wayward woman about to be stoned and breathed forgiveness at His last to a thief. The Gospel According to Dobson is a testament to a vindictive, swaggering Christianity that constructs a cross of lies upon which to crucify its enemies.

If he could, Dobson would strip Americans of the Divine Spark itself: free will. In its place, he would install a Republican theocracy. And in so doing, he would negate the very purpose of the Creator in giving human beings the gift that makes us each unique. That casts each of us in the image of God. Makes each of us little creators in our own right. Each of us able to see reality and fashion some small bit of it ourselves.

In Dobson's view, there is but one God. And He speaks in a voice that sounds eerily similar to James Dobson's.

Preach!

May I get an "Amen!?"

Amen and Amen.

Thank ya, Jesus!

What's funny is that Obama seems to know his Bible pretty well. It might actually be fun to see Obama and Dobson debate it.

But who would moderate it?

How about a panel of Pope Benedict, Lewis Black and Shirley MacLaine?

Could we get Richard Dawkins involved? If not, how about Richard Dawson?

Could we get Richard Dawkins involved? If not, how about Richard Dawson?

Dawkins (the Darwinist, right?) might be a possibility. Richard Dawson, much like Generalissimo Francisco Franco, is still dead.

Dobson's problem is that Obama's understanding of the Bible conflicts with Dobson's the biblical rationale that Dobson uses to promote his politics. That's inconvenient for him. So, he's set out to discredit Obama among Christian voters. I'm thinking it's not gonna work. Dobson's on his way out and Obama's star is rising.

testify!

a supposed christian attacking a fellow christian. nice. i left dobson a not so nice message at his website

And of course the irony of what Jimmy boy Dobson has said is that he's 'interpreted' the Bible in many twisted ways for many years. and that irony is obviously lost on him, as he has no sense of irony or humor for that matter. he claims to 'know' the Bible, well one of the few things Jesus did rail against in the Bible was against false prophets, and money lenders I believe. Dobson is very assuredly a false prophet and perhaps a money lender, as in to campaigns that might follow his words. but that last part would be illegal. ill bet he still does it. so Jesus would, I imagine, as Id never presume to 'really' know what Jesus would do, denounce Dobson for the fraud he is. game set life.

"The Gospel According to Dobson is a testament to a vindictive, swaggering Christianity that constructs a cross of lies upon which to crucify its enemies."

That is some masterful sentence construction. Well done.

What can I say? I was divinely inspired.

Dobson's certainty bothers me. Religious certitude has always bothered me.

"In Dobson's view, there is but one God. And He speaks in a voice that sounds eerily similar to James Dobson's."

Says it all.

Rec'd and Amen!

Having been raised Mormon, your 4th paragraph, your take on free will (what we'd call 'free agency'), echoes everything I learned growing up.

Your post, and the betrayal I see around me of the principle of 'free will' by folks who ought to know better, has inspired me to post similar (albeit utterly Mormon) thoughts today.

Dobson and his friends on the right should take a lessson from Rick Warren, author of the book, A Purpose Driven Life.
Warren invited Obama to speak from the pulpit of his mega church. That invite got some on the so called religious right very upset!
I wonder why ???
I think they are scared of Obama !

Could we get Richard Dawkins involved? If not, how about Richard Dawson?

Holy shit! This blog editor sure likes my posts!

How about Dawson's Creek?

Everyone knows Jesus was a Lefty pinko. Being Christian is soooo un-'muricun.

Did I mention Jesus was of Middle-Eastern decent? Must be a terrorist too.

Everyone is against Dobson-but you diddn't see him launch a website against Caldwell did you now-that's called revenge. Caldwell states that Obama is pro-life, but respects woman's right to choose-that is a contradictory statement. You cannot support pro-life and than say okay well it is a woman's right to choose. Yes a person can choose, but they do not have the right to choose abortion because abortion is wrong. God is against abortion and since Obama claims to be a christian wouldn't he then be against abortion. You don't have to be a christian to know that Christians believe abortion is wrong. Obama likes to play the "safe middle ground" he pretends that he is for everything and for everyone-he is our cheerleader-not a leader. And I think if he gets elected you will find this out. Dobson is right on in what he says. If you really want the truth in news go to onenewsnow.com
