My Backhanded Compliment to Bill

I was about to get all up in arms and scream “nooooooooooo” at the prospect of Bill Clinton campaigning for him.

Bill is a huge liability and I personally think he acted like a complete and utter douche during this campaign, but there is one thing you cannot deny: He is still hugely popular among many of the people who supported Hillary.  I'll also bet Bill does do some campaigning for Obama. It allows him to remain relevant and indulges his penchant to be an attention whore.  Allowing him to do so, will make sure the Clintons remain friendly.

We may not like it, but having the Clintons for allies makes Obama’s path to the Whitehouse much easier.  Just sayin…

What do you all think?

I think they'll use him in a low key way where he's best - white, rural districts.

I had the same thought reading the post, then saw your comment. Definitely, keep him confined to Appalachia.

Better yet, keep him confined to Europe.

I would have to say Bill Clinton is a huge hand grenade. He could explode at any time. I just don't see Bill helping much on the trail. Witness that he could not campaign effectively for his wife without interjecting himself into the conversation:

"When ah was President.... (30 minutes later) now Hillary is wonderful and would be a great president... (20 minutes later) ... oh yeah...vote for Osama... I mean, Obama. Thank you and God Bless America."

We don't need the wagging finger wagging the dog.

I have a funny feeling Barack & Bill will somehow end up friends. We all know Hillary will be a very active member of an Obama Whitehouse, in some fashion, somehow.

Obama is so gracious & so cool he will do what is best for him, the Clintons & most of all, this country & all of us. He has certainly made a very good start. Don't doubt the unity, looking good!

As much as I liked the Clinton years, Bill really has said some dumb things recently. But hey, he's an old guy. Not all Democratic presidents are going to age like Carter and become beacons of truth and altruism.

Absolutely. Get Bill Clinton on the team. Hillary too. They remain stars in the Democratic party, and both continue to have a strong following throughout the country. In addition, the Obama team should recruit Ed Rendell, Debbie Wasserman Schultz, and Stephanie Tubbs Jones and other Clinton supporters. Those strong Clinton backers did an excellent job for Clinton, and it would only be an anvantage to have them working for Team Obama.

"Unity" is more than a bumper sticker. It's something that all democrats should work for if we want to win in November.

Excellent reply!

It's stuff like this that makes "change we can believe in" more than just a slogan.

Bill was a total ass during the primary. He was fighting for his wife! I think that actually brought up more emotions than when he was fighting for his own hide. Give him a few weeks off, a month or so, let him get some sleep and his "sea legs" back and he will be an incredible stand-in for Obama. And President Clinton is still mostly well-loved. (Just because we junkies saw it doesn't mean most regular folks did.)

President Clinton will be an asset again.I mean thnk of it, the Reps have GWB and GHWB and GHWB's cabinet as their bench. Obama has all the Clinton deep bench, many Carter Cabinet appointees and the outside-the-belt-way-Dems.And the Dems have Gore. Game. Set. Match.

I thought the lesson about Bill is that it's not possible for him to be low-key?

I think Gore made a mistake by not putting Bill out there enough. Obama would be smart to strategically use him. With conditions, of course.
