NYT: Obama Supporters Legally Changing their Middle Names to Hussein

This was just mentioned on the Bill Press Show.   It's not just bloggers changing their nicks anymore, now dedicated Obama supporters are going to court to legally change their middle name to Hussein, or to add it as an additional middle name.

I've just heard the most amazing anti-Obama rumor!

Apparently his middle name is not, repeat NOT "Hussein"!

It's HERMAN!!!

He thought is was soooo lame that when he was fifteen, he asked his mother, Stanley Ann, if he could change it legally, she had suffered so much ribbing from her name that she gave him permission. He thought Hussein sounded really cool and that's how it all happened.

Neat, huh?

I was wondering why there were all those rumors that the copy of his birth certificate that he posted online had been forged. NOW WE KNOW!

I heard that he wasn't even human! He's from Proxima Centauri, and that's not even a proper G-class star.

Not to quibble, but these folks aren't legally changing their names. They have just adopted using Hussein as a way to show how silly people are to attach so much meaning to a name.

I did this myself on Facebook so I'd be able to bring people's xenophobia to the surface. Also the idea of people being terrified about a stealth Muslim invasion is absolutely hilarious -- they need to get a grip.

Yeah, sorry about that. Bill Press misquoted the article and specifically emphasized that this was more that just bloggers - that is was people legally changing their names. Without adequately confirming that, I posted the link here. I was probably tricked in part by 1) the fact people are doing this on blogs is hardly "news" - it's been going on since at least Super Tuesday; and, 2) the use of the word "informally" in the linked article, which my mind flipped to formally.

Sorry again, carry on.

For some reason, this bothered me:

“My name is such a vanilla, white-girl American name,” said Ashley Holmes of Indianapolis, who changed her name online “to show how little meaning ‘Hussein’ really has.”

We all know that Ashley (and Ashlie) is actually a boy's name. There's Ashley Wilkes from Gone With the Wind, Ashley Parker Angel from the boy band O-Town, as well as several other male Ashlies I'm aware of…
