To TPM and Josh Marshall

I used to work at a Ruth's Chris in Mobile, AL until recently.  During the heat of Gonzogate, one of our guests happened to be Senator Sessions -- member of the Judiciary Committee.  I had met the Senator before at an AIPAC fund raiser for Laura Bush at my uncle's house in 1999 -- I was a senior in high school (and obviously impressionable given my taste in bed fellows).  As Mr. Sessions stood up from his table and started to walk out I told him directly, "Give Mr. Gonzalez hell Senator."  He froze.  He regained composer, smiled, and said "have a goodnight."  His dinner partner went to the restroom and poor Mr. Sessions stood in the hallway.  I went back to him.  I said, "Just do the right thing."  He said, "Who are you?"  I reminded him of the event at which we were introduced.  You know Republicans: throw out an AIPAC heavy hitter and they're all ears.

We stepped outside and spoke for close to 20 minutes.  Because of the real-time concurrent feed you and your staff give to us, I could call the Senator on nonsense over and over.  In the end, I let him know, the policies that were (at the time) keeping Gonzalez in at A.G. were the same policies that drove a blood thirsty neo-conservative like my past self into a progressive and bleeding heart anti-war liberal.

I don't know that it had any impact on him.  But I will say this to all of TPM, it had a profoundly empowering effect on me.  To have the confidence that I could take on someone like that, literally take him outside, was -- and still is -- pretty damn awesome.  Thank you.

Cheers to you for having the courage to confront that little twerp. I have watched him during hearings and wanted to bop him repeatedly.

Must have been such a buzz! Thanks for sharing.

M. B. Hill: Great story; keep 'em comin'! I hope Josh reads this & writes back to you. Good stuff...

Great story and great work! Recommended. It is kind of the reason I wrote my latest blog: In Defense of a Good Offense.

We need to take the fight the enemy. Not in the classic sense, but in the sense that we are in an existential struggle right now and anyone who stands in the way of that transition is the "enemy" and needs to be turned to our side or taken out.

There are no other choices right now.

The choices that do remain are few and mostly inadequate, but fighting back has always been the last refuge of many Americans and an option that never goes away.

To paraphrase the age-old saying:

The Truth will set us free.

(thanks from me, too, TPM, for doing your part towards bringing the truth to light)

well done.

Great post. Also, the very idea of an AIPAC fund raiser for Laura Bush with Senator Sessions in Mobile, Alabama is rather...words fail!

Good for you, M. B. Hill! You have my admiration.

Hooray for Josh and the staff at TPM!

You rule, M.B. Hill! And your hair is unrivaled.

Thanks. I forgot to comb it before the picture.

I'm heartened whenever I hear that someone changed their point of view, their politics, or their beliefs because they learned about what was flawed in them. It's a very rare occurrence. There are too few people who will even open their minds to opposing information.

So kudos to you, and keep on making about what's truly right, and not what we're told is right.

It all sounds kind of lame.

Who cares about rat-fuck Sessions.

Me, for one. He is supposed to represent me, my family, my neighbors, and my friends.

In your light, who cares about Bush? Well, as long as he makes decisions, or allows others to make decisions, that impact our lives/end some of our lives, we care. Apathy is what got us into this mess in the first place sir.
