Whimsy, riffing and winding down

After a long day of John McCain, Wesley Clark, charges and countercharges, it’s late.

And it’s time to mellow out and relax a bit.

I invite you to come on in, share a vid or a thought --- and, yes, it can even be about the issues of the day, but don’t expect excess heaviness --- and relax.

I don’t know about you guys, but, after a hard day of watching the “squiggles” ($1 to Malcolm P. Johnson), I just need to take some time to lay back, listen to some tunes, maybe enjoy a favorite beverage (I’m currently savoring a Maker’s and water) and bullshit about whatever comes to mind.

It’s about whimsy, riffing and winding down.

Hope to see you here soon.

I'll start things off with a favorite tune of mine from the great Warren Haynes and Gov't Mule.

Enjoy!

Thanks for the invite, Aubie.
My current buzz is a nice, inexpensive Bolla Valpolicella.
No music, though. I'm prepping for the Jon Stewart-Steven Colbert combo in a few minutes.
Gives me the beat, soothes my soul.

Understood.

Colbert was a rerun from last week.

I missed Stewart.

Meanwhile, I've been grooving to a little Ben Harper.

And I've never tried that particular wine, but I love a good, full-bodied red.

Stewart's a rerun too. Bummer.
Valpolicella, from northeast Italy, is made mostly from Corvina grapes, which taste like sour cherries. The "ripasso" versions are even fuller-bodied but cost a bit more.
Up here in Montreal, we're well into our annual jazz festival. This year's highlight was the return, after 15 years, of native son Leonard Cohen.
I was too slow to get tickets, but those who did said his show was among the best they'd seen -- by any performer -- ever.
Over 70, he's still in fine voice.
His current world tour goes on for some months. If he comes anywhere near your hometown, or some place you happen to be, catch him.
You won't be sorry. A genuine musical genius.

I'm familiar with Leonard. He wrote "Hallelujah."

But, I have to admit, that I like Jeff Buckley's version better.

But Cohen's a very talented artist and, yes, I'd love to see him in concert.

Here's Buckley's "Hallelujah".

Warning: It starts slowly (but it's well worth it!)

So, what's up with Obama?

I think it's pretty simple and that it makes sense.

He's tacking to the center to get elected!

Caught him once and he was sniffin' my undies.

Ahhhh.

What a wonderful sentiment?

The things we do in spite of ourselves!

I feel like I'm dominating the conversation.

More specifically, I feel like I threw a party and no one showed up.

But that's okay.

I'll entertain myself.

But Iris gets a little meaner.

Don't know why I thought about this. I don't have a landlord. But does anyone remember this?

Dark and lonely on the summer night.
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
Watchdog barking - Do he bite?
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
Slip in his window,
Break his neck!
Then his house
I start to wreck!
Got no reason --
What the heck!
Kill my landlord, kill my landlord.
C-I-L-L ...
My land - lord ...

Hi Cowboy! How's it shifting tonight?

As you can see, the shifting has been slow and one-sided.

Nice to see you here! ;-)

Efforts at fun obviously do not do well on this site, but I shall continue to fight the man for the sake of whimsy, which, I believe is largely underrated!

One recommendation (mine)!

Sheesh!

"It's after dark again...where do you imagine yourself? Or are you exactly where you want to be?

I see a beach in the snow... or a mountaintop emersed in a cloud. Perhaps a valley, or canyon waiting for the sunrise. A riverboat afloat, a lazy stream with a fishing pole, a field of vibrant flowers toasting summer. A log cabin in woods filled with nature's grace. Maybe a swanky condo overlooking Times Square, with a martini.

Where are you tonight?"

I posted this at an ungodly hour this AM. No one cared to suggest where they were. But that was me doing the "whimsy, riffing and winding down." thing.

So even if no one gets your post, or if you end up with all kinds of responses (squiggles and all) - either way, I appreciate the mood.

Yeah, I saw that post when I logged on this morning at work, but I was looooong asleep by the time you posted it.

But, glory be!, I'm off for SIX STRAIGHT DAYS and only had to burn three days leave. Still got a 10-day vacation planned later this summer!!!

I'm only off for three, I'm jealous. Especially with the 10 days coming up! Where ya going, if you don't mind my asking?

Going to see some friends for the Fourth. I'll go up Thursday and stay until Saturday.

For the 10 days, I'm going to the beautiful sugar-white sandy beaches of Orange Beach, Alabama, in August. I've been to a lot of places, and I think they are the most beautiful beaches in the world.

I'm within minutes of Atlantic Beach, North Carolina. Happen to work directly on it. I don't doubt your beach there in Alabama is wonderful. The west coast ain't got nothin' on us!

It's about a three-and-a-half hour drive for me to Orange Beach. It's really spectacular and not yet (and I hope never) turned into the commercial sellouts that Panama City and others in Florida are. Orange Beach is fully developed, but it's sorta high-dollar and still maintains a certain purity.

Plus, it's an Alabama beach and I have to put my money in my own state's coffers.

And, God, do I EVER love the beach!

Interesting! Your comments about Orange Beach could be about my beach! Not too commercial, thank God nowhere near Myrtle Beach, SC, and has become more high-dollar thanks to development over the past few years. Always a beautiful spot, just different. But have to say, high-dollar develpment has a real down side, too. Mainly for locals.

I'm sitting maybe a football field from the sand right now. Peaceful, quiet, the moon is shining...it's hot as hell with a wonderful southern breeze.

Heaven.

A football field from the sand?!?!

DAMN YOU!!

I'm saving for my beach house.

Unfortunately, I like to spend, too. :-)

BYW, anyone scolling by, feel free to jump in! The water's fine...

Really!

You'd think someone else would want to join in the conversaton.

But IT IS Monday.

But, neener, neener!

I don't have to work tomorrow or the next day, or the next day, or the next day, or the next day, or the NEXT DAY!

Maybe if you opened a late night thread folks would be more likely to participate. I'm fairly new and folks don't really know mw.

As previously mentioned, that hasn't worked too well. Once in awhile, but... I tend to post mellow and thoughtful in these late hours. Type A go for the jugular work yourself into a hissy fit (warning, southern phrase) people don't get into it. Hey! Maybe I've pissed someone off (see: Northern) and they'll rant!

Well, I'm rather enjoying this conversation whether others want to or not.

So we'll have a thread with 50 posts and two recommends! :-)

DAMN YOU! I'm only off tomorrow and the next day and the next day. My first day back is July 4th! How wrong is that? Sigh, at least the holiday pay will help. Put an extra gallon of gas in the old car.

But neener, neener! I'm at the beach!!!

I think I'd swap an extra couple days of work --- though maybe not the Fourth --- for the beach.

OTOH, I've got 10 days at the beach later this summer!

Cool! Maybe should go for a record!! Wonder what it is?

Enjoying it, too. Mellow conversation on TPM. Who'd a thunk it?

Surely we'll have someone wander in at some point that will recommend, but, if they don't, what do we care, huh?

I enjoy talking to you.

So, what's your favorite band?

::crickets::

You called?

Actually, I was mimicking the sounds of the insects, but it's always a pleasure to see the lady in the blue dress! ;-)

Hard to say. At almost 46 I've had alot of them as life has changed..shifted. One of my favorites many years ago and still today is Bad Company. No, don't think that. It's true. Also Uriah Heep, Rush, Blood Sweat and Tears, Bread ("IF" is an absolute favorite), Queen.. good grief, if I had hours to digress I'd come up with hundreds.

Now, not sure that I have a favorite, or ever did. I enjoy all kinds of music, and it is always shifting between the classic bands I love and new ones that blow me away daily.

If a picture paints a thousand words,
Then why can't I paint you?
The words will never show the you I've come to know.
If a face could launch a thousand ships,
Then where am I to go?
There's no one home but you,
You're all that's left me too.
And when my love for life is running dry,
You come and pour yourself on me.

If a man could be two places at one time,
I'd be with you.
Tomorrow and today, beside you all the way.
If the world should stop revolving spinning slowly down to die,
I'd spend the end with you.
And when the world was through,
Then one by one the stars would all go out,
Then you and I would simply fly away

That is perhaps the sweetest thing I've ever seen directed at me in writing. Every word correct - and I know every word. I am, indeed, too impressed to say. Except, thank you. Truly.

"If I could save time in a bottle, the first thing that I'd like to do...

Is to save every day, 'til eternity passes away, just to spend it with you.."

If I could make days last forever
If words could make wishes come true
I'd save every day 'til eternity passes away
Just to spend them with you

But there never seems
To be enough time
To do the things you wanna do
Once you find them
I've looked around enought to now
THat you're the one I wann go
Through time with

You're good. Thank you for that, too. Special, to say the least.

If I had a box just for wishes
And dreams that had never come true -
The box would be empty except for the memory
Of how they were answered by you -

Oops! Meant to use quotes. Continuation of the above song...

I found your diary underneath the tree
And started reading about me
THe words you'd written took me by surprise
I'd never read them in your eyes
THey said that you hd found
The love you'd waited for
Wouldn't you know it
You wouldn't show it

I found your diary underneath the tree
And started reading about me
THe words began to stick and tears to flow
Your meaning now was clearly seen
'The love you'd waited for
Was someone else no me
WOuldn't you know it
You wouldn't show it

How did you know that was perhaps my second favorite? Or are you just pulling lyrics from Google? Be honest... ;)

Otherwise, I'm astonished.

Did not pull them from Google. Promise!

Then I stand properly astonished. And stll impressed!

Well out of Southern Illinois
Came a down home country boy
Gonna make it in the city playin' guitar in the studio
Well I was gonna be a big success
Things sure ended up a mess
And in the process I got messed up too

Well, I hadn't been there an hour
When I met a Broadway flower
Well, she left me in the alley
Took my money and my guitar, too

Hello Mama and Dad, I had to call collect
'Cause I ain't got a cent to my ane
And I'm sleepin' in the hotel doorway
And tonight they say it's gonna rain
And if you'll only send me some money
I'll be back on my feet again
Send it in care of the Sunday Mission
Box nunber 10.

It's late (early) and I have to retire very soon. Can you talk for a moment instead of the music thing?

Sure.

What's up?

Oh look! Over 50! ;)

And mostly me and you!

So what's up?

I really have to get some sleep now. I actually wish I didn't because I would like to continue our conversation. But it is what it is - time for bed.

See you at another time, on another thread. Enjoy your days off! And REALLY enjoy the beach. I know you will.

I'll hang for a moment to wait for your goodnight. Wouldn't seem right otherwise.

Are you gone?

I wish you a wonderful goodnight and may your dreams be special!

I'll be back on tomorrow and Wednesday nights, but likely out through Sunday after that.

If we can talk in the meantime, I'd love it.

Goodnight!

Rec'd bro. Thanks for the sanctuary.

Here's where I'm at now, getting ready for a little 4th celebration...

By the way, you gotta listen to it without watching the video. It's a little painful on the eyes. Or good for a laugh, I guess.

Enjoy the holiday!
