Winning isn't everything. But I still think we'll win...

After a very long yet wonderful day in the park celebrating my son's 3rd birthday, I came home to watch Hillary's speech on Tivo. Although I would have loved a dig or two at Sen. McCain, I thought she hit it out of the park. I was proud to watch her and it reminded me of why I had been such a fan of hers before some of the nastier moments of this campaign.

At the start of the primaries, I seriously doubted she could win the general. I just knew how high her negatives were, and she was such a favorite of the right-wing smear machine. Over the course of the campaign against Obama, I really started to believe she could win. I'm still amazed that the poster child of alleged liberal elitism somehow became the voice of blue-collar America. But I voted for Barack, and I really wanted him to be the nominee.

Looking ahead now, I don't know for sure that he will win this thing. It's still hard for a lot of people out there to pull the lever for a black man. If anyone can do it, it's Barack, but I think it's entirely possible that Hillary would be more of a lock, especially looking at the numbers in Florida and Ohio and Pennsylvania. But this isn't bothering me in the least. Because if she ran and won, it would be four to eight years of more divisive politics.

What I want to see is if Barack Obama can pull off a win using a new way. Can he forego the old map, the old focus groups, the old methods of running a campaign and be the new leader he promises he can be? I don't know. But what I came to realize today is that I'd rather lose with him than win with her. And I don't mean that to be harsh. I just think, pardon the cliché, that it is time for a change. And if we don't get there this time, our country will be better off having seen a Barack Obama candidacy.

But if we do get there? Look out...it's gonna be good.

I personally think this "old" vs "new" is a bit over blown. Nothing is truly ever new.

But I do look forward to seeing Obama's version of the same-old

Eloquent!

Well, I wasn't referring to this idealistic notion that Obama is never going to play dirty. He's from Chicago. He knows how to throw and elbow. And we need that. I was referring to his 50 state strategy, as opposed to Hillary just trying to get to 270. Obama may not get 300, but he's engaging parts of the country that Dems have ignored for too long. That lays a foundation for the future.
