Women's Figures: A political approach
I consider myself a feminist (and aside from the occassional stupid joke, my wife would agree) and many of my friends and associates are also.
Most were Hillary Clinton supporters and, for obvious reasons, many of them are not pleased with the outcome of the Democratic presidential nomination. A few have even said that can't bring themselves to vote for Obama.
For those women, and like-minded men, who have any doubt which party represents and is better represented by women, I offer these numbers from the Center for American Women and Politics, the Eagleton Institute of Politics, Rutgers University: http://www.cawp.rutgers.edu/Facts/Officeholders/cong.pdf
In the current 110th Congress:
* 16 of the 100 Senate seats are occupied by women. Of those, 11, or almost 70%, are Democrats.
* 71 of the 435 (16.3%) House seats are occupied by women. Of those, 51, or almost 72%, are Democrats.
To date:
* 241 women have served in the House. Of those, 156 have been Democrats. That's 65 percent.
* 17 of the 28 (61%) women senators have been Democrats.
To date: A total of 34 women of color have served in Congress ( 23 African-American; 7 Latinas; and 4 Asian/Pacific-Americans). All but one, Carol Moseley Brown (D-Ill.), served in the House.
There is no breakdown on party affiliation for the women of color.
