He should get a Golden Retriever, they're brilliant and look great on camera. Naturally, the GOP activists are pushing hard for 'poodle' to win and tbh it shouldn't even be on the list.

There are rescue organizations for purebreds, too, so the Obamas may decide to opt out of going to a reputable breeder. They may fall in love with a Heinz 57 at the local pound. Since puppy is for his daughters, Obama should let the choice be theirs.
In the spirit of full disclosure, having had a miniature poodle, miniature schaunzer, Bichon Frise (among those on the list and several other breeds and mixes over the years), any of those three would make for a fun, lively companion for the young Obama girls.

A lady I know rescued a champion bulldog. Jazz was barren, ignored and kept in a basement most of her life. By the time she was adopted she could barely walk, but at least she had two years of family life.
I like poodles. We had some nice, well-bred French (the sire was actually brought in from France) miniature poodles when I was growing up. They had silly AKC names and my mother used to spend a fortune on fancy cuts with obnoxious perfume that sent them scampering for the nearest waterhole. I'd never buy one, though with so many others that need homes.
Apparently now is a particularly bad time for pets. People may be stripping their foreclosed houses, but many of them are abandoning their backyard pets as they move into apartments or in with family.

I think it's obvious that Obama is a cat person, and this backtracking to dogs is just another example of his political savvy in getting elected. Once he's in the White House, you can bet Fido is going to the Rose Garden and Miss Kitty Twinklesticks will finally get her due.

I think they should go to the Humane Society and adopt a homeless pup. Actually two. I think dogs are happier when they have a canine buddy to hang with.
And they should definitely be mutts. Like Americans! YES!!

Actually, two puppies - especially littermates -- are a bad idea. It interferes with the bonding to humans that has to happen in this civilized world of ours. Most reputable breeders and reputable rescues won't place pups together, want them at least six months apart. Just FYI.
Humane Society or rescue or a truly responsible breeder (many of whom work in rescue) are the best bet, but if there is a serious allergy problem, they are probably limited to either breeders or breed rescue. However, the site doesn't list all dogs that are hypoallergenic. Where's the Portuguese Water Dog? That would be my choice.

Even though I've been the proud owner of 2 purebreds (miniature poodle and now a portuguese water dog), I agree the Obamas should go with a rescued "American Mixed Breed." Generally speaking mutts are smart, adaptable, well-tempered, and embody the best traits of their constituent breeds.
