"He just doesn't understand!" A golden opportunity for Obama

Someone in John McCain's campagin has apparently told the Republican nominee that a winning strategy would be for him to repeat ad infinitum that Obama "just doesn't understand."
Whatever the occasion (Townhall Meeting, Interview), McCain repeats this attack line over and over (It's quite funny because it makes him seem so desperate).
The Obama camapaign should make a series of ads commencing with McCain saying "He just doesn't understand about four or five times" and then show him making one of his many gaffes.  The choice in unlimited: Iraq-Pakistan border; Putin President of Germany, etc., etc.

Your article points to your insight as a potential strategist and tactician. If you ask me, I think you could serve the Obama well as their campaign ad maker.

Curious - this 'ad' - do you consider it as taking a page out of McCain's playbook? Wouldn't a positive ad about Obama's proposed policies be better? Just askin'.

All the studies of political messaging show that the best method is to combine attack and positive.

And the very best way to attack is to let the candidate himself do it - ie you use McCain, not Obama, to attack McCain - use his own quotes against him - and then end the ad with your own candidate's positive message.

But attacks work. Lab studies have shown that. People who were shown negative ads said they didn't like then and discounted them, but then subtle follow up questions showed how well they had actually worked.

Negativity in campaigning is intensely powerful: far more than positive. The reason is the amygdala - emotive force is far greater than rational. So you have to have negativity in your campaign - you have to destroy the other candidate - and then have the positives to complete the deal.

I assume Axelrod of all people must know that - his main job is going to be to convince Obama of it.

It's a great idea! I don't see this as an attack ad, I see this as a way to highlight the other side of McCain to voters. the reckless, terrible mistakes McCain makes which don't get their due on air in the MSM. The MSM is giving McCain a pass on his gaffes but voters really need to know this aspect of McCain, the befuddled, uninformed McCain, uninterested in the facts and reality on the ground, hopelessly out of his depth yet belligerent and uncompromising. I'm agitated just thinking damn, he's so much like Bush, only more aggressive, dishonest and a scary adrenaline junkie. This ad pales in comparison to the outright lies McCain promulgated in his recent ads about Obama canceling his troop visit. This is at least honest and truthful, and if the MSM aren't doing their job, we should. The YouTubes are already taking things into their hands.

This would be a better ad for someone like moveon.org to make than the Obama campaign. a strong point of his appeal to voters is his ability and desire to stay about the negative fray and truely change the tone of things. i think it better to let a surrogate get in the muck and throw the dirt. even if it is true!

should be 'above' the fray...

I agree with you on this. MoveOn.org would be the better choice to air something like this and Senator Obama could stay above the fray.
