Where Are Our Thomas Paine's ?

One is left with only the option of befuddling speculation when trying to answer why this administration, in whole, is not already impeached, under indictment or jailed. There are no rational or practical explanations. Congress clearly has all the justification needed to long ago have proceeded with impeachment. I hold them in contempt of their legal responsibilities to the Constitution and the American people. There can no longer be any doubt they are either being blackmailed, or worse, in secret and willing collusion with this neoconic and dangerous regime. There is a vile and insidious process underway to subvert the American form of government and to curtail and contain the liberties and freedoms guaranteed us in the U.S. Constitution. It also seems evident that if this gathering storm is not stopped and reversed by a brave, steadfast and TRULY patriotic Congress and law enforcement apparatus as REQUIRED by the Constitution, the inescapable duty and responsibility will ultimately rest with the people of this once great and free land. The time to correct this massive attack on America by neoconic traitors is past due and has entered a critical phase.

Richard, you have said it all so very well. I agree that we should hold Congress in contempt rather than making excuses for the failure of so many of them to defend the Constitution. The American people need to show the same courage and conviction that we want from our elected leaders. Thanks for speaking up.

There can no longer be any doubt [congresspeople] are either being blackmailed, or worse, in secret and willing collusion with this neoconic and dangerous regime.

I disagree with the spirit of this statement. As I see it, the Dems in Congress are simply venal, self-serving, political hacks who want to continue to pile up wealth and power at the expense of the taxpayer. They don't represent the anti-christ, just 300 some-odd Profiles in Lack of Courage, living in craven, abject fear of the Republican attack machine and its mouthpiece, the right-wing corporate media.

On the other hand, one might be entirely justified in classifying such behavior as "willing collusion" with the neocons.

IMO, our system has turned members of Congress into slaves of reelection. They want to hold on to their jobs, and getting reelected is almost their main focus from the day they start a new cycle. Their jobs are the ultimate elite in this country (at least on some level) and they have a pretty cushy time of it by comparison with the majority of "hard working" Americans. Who would want to lose that nice job and all the ego strokes it provides, not to mention money and opportunity few of us will ever realize?

Only a politician who is not concerned with the specter of reelection could stand up and do what's right utterly without fear. Or someone who's moral compass points toward what's ultimately right more strongly than it points toward self-interest/self-preservation.

I think you and I are saying the same thing.

I simply don't understand the apathy of tpmcafers.

Here, we've all been waiting years for the appearance of a brave Diogenes who will speak truth to power, and when one finally does and speaks that truth with eloquence and authority, he only gets 8 recommendations.

I'm telling you -- it's a crying shame.

a) We are the choir, preach.

b) Diogenes? Richard, care to give us your opinion of dogs? How's that search going?

I'm beginning to think that the utterly pervasive curruption of governance into politics is too big to impeach. It feels like the Fannie/Freddie failure, or Chrysler. Attacking the disease would indict nearly everyone, so the enthusiasm is meager. The committee heads and party leaders are compromised by their witting and unwitting agreement to "anti-terror" excesses.

In contrast, Clinton's minor infraction was unconnected with any real governing, so it was safe to attack with all guns blazing.

Tom, you are exactly correct, especially during an election year. We may not even get an explanation why not after the election as it would muddle the new beginning. Hopefully as time expands it will be explained, actually it will have to be. A country with this much frustration must have a release valve.

Lately, I hear the voices that have been in my head for years now, spoken often from my mouth, echoed in passionate and frustrated rants on TPM. All I can say is the complicity of Congress is shameful. If I had my way, we would do a clean sweep, ban the Republican Party for 20 years (okay, not practical, but I'm that angry and disgusted at them and don't consider that they deserve any respect) and change our electoral system so that politicians didn't have to be rich to run for office.

(I'd also make them watch Mr. Smith Goes to Washington - the Jimmy Stewart version - at least once a month.)

I'd also make them watch Mr. Smith Goes to Washington - the Jimmy Stewart version - at least once a month.

So that they can see how the Federal government doesn't operate and never did?

Amen!
