After a decade of republican media slurs and attacks. After what must have been more than a half billion dollars of rightwing funded attacks on his character and legacy.....
As angry as his sins have made me, I have never wondered for one moment whether he would put America ahead of himself. I have never for one moment thought he went into politics to get rich or for anything other than public service and some healthy egoism.
and when I hear him talk, oh, I have missed having a president who could talk!!! I have missed having a president who did not shame me with his ignorance.
you're right...a president actually intelligent, a policy wonk at that!
You know I am wondering what people who are watching the conventions through the cable news networks are missing. I think the emotional impact of the great speeches is being blunted by the instant cynical analysis...Its all up in the head stuff. The heart may start getting fired up but then it is doused by the stupidity of the analysis.
Folks, don't ever watch on the networks again, please. Go to CSPAN, watch the full show there and let your heart and mind process the show without being forced to listen to stuff totally destructive of that true and natural processing.
I have missed having a president who could talk!!!
And talk and talk and talk and...
;-)
I sooo miss that guy!
Great seeing him as his old self.
The Clintons are great people.
Honor them.
You know if it weren't for the 22nd Amendment he might have won a third term...
I love this country and I wear my heart on my sleeve sometimes and I have to admit I've teared up a couple of times in this convention: The Clintons, Michele, even Kerry (damn but he gave a good speech)
In a way, you have to have lived through those desert years of Reagan/Bush I, to appreciate what a deliverance from Pharaoh, the Clinton Presidency was.
And that's what its really about, the Republicans are Pharaoh now.
You know if it weren't for the 22nd Amendment he might have won a third term...
He might not have had a 1st term for the 22nd Amendment. In 1988, the country was still in love with Ronald Reagan. He was the first president to get clipped by the 22nd Amendment, which would have completely changed the issues in the 1992 election.
Hey, if you are dealing in counterfactuals, go all the way!
I sure wasn't in love with Reagan! Anyway on your counterfactual, Reagan would have had to win four terms to deny Bill his first. Three terms, maybe. But four? He'd have been getting pretty spacey by then....
Reagan was certainly in no mental capacity to run for a 3rd term. It was questionable even at #2.
he played many roles. but the poltroon of the Hollywood red investigations of the McCarthy era was probably one that stuck.
I'd say that Reagan was dicey even for the first term!
And Clearthinker--maybe the GOP was in love with Reagan, but the whole country was never in love with Reagan.
Bill is a living legend.
Thank you Bill. Only you could have made the connection between hope in '92 and hope in '08 and you did it. With consummate public speaking skill.
I was worried as you began to speak when the camera panned to Hillary and she looked worried, in freeze frame. But you came through and made it look and sound as though this is what you thought all along. No one but you could have glossed over the disparity between what you said during the primary and what you said tonight. But your greatest moment was when you addressed the future and said, re McCain: "...thank you, but no thank you."And, for that, Bill, I say: THANK YOU, and THANK YOU.
Bill absolutely did everything he needed to do, and a good chunk of what I wanted him to do.
The Big Dog is at his very best when he takes big, complicated issues, and reduces them to absurdly simple choices. He did a wonderful job of that tonight.
The explicit endorsement of Obama's readiness was critical - and he did it twice. Well done, Mr. President.
Now, Bill just has to call Wolfson, Carville and Begala - and tell them to STFU. :-)
OK I will bite the bullet. Eastside, you have expressed my sentiments exactly.
Actually I am surprised at myself. When the speech began, I started out doing a Mystery Science Theater snark commentary to my husband, but after a while, the heart of his words shone through. Darn it...I wanted to stay mad at him...but I could not deny the inspiration.
I couldn't go on snarking him after that.
He did exactly what I didn't dare hope - he showed America that he believes in Barack and that he is ready to lead.
While I knew he was going to endorse, I was astounded by such a glowing endorsement. It was much more than I expected from him.
Now that the potential nastiness within the party is finished, I can breathe a little easier.
Bill and Hillary - thank you for your service to our great nation. Now lets kick some McCain butt! :)
And now its on to Invesco Field at Mile High.
The earth was formless and void, and darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was moving over the surface of the waters.
Couple of statements above that sort of sum it up for me.
"He did exactly what I didn't dare hope"
"No one but you could have glossed over the disparity between what you said during the primary and what you said tonight."
and "Thank you, Mr. President"
It WAS good to see him *back* ...feel that magic again? Who WAS that person running around in his clothes during the primary???
Once or twice while Biden was speaking and the cameras flashed to the Clintons, I got the feeling that maybe to their surprise, they were enjoying things, maybe a little enthused, and maybe even interested in the "tomorrows" coming up. Never a door closes without .....
Her speech complemented by his -- you truly couldn't ask for more. I think I'll go eat a lot of words now.
You know, somehwre yesterday afternoon I got a kind of peace about the Clintons. I knew Hillary would come through and now Bill...He is so damned good. Only Barack is in his league as a speechifier, or only Bill is in Barack's league...
you get the idea.
Its going to be a f**king morgue in Minn. (I hope) next week...
I'm really interested in how their snore-fest in Minn will play out, and especially with the media. They're whole bit has gotten so obvious, the way they try to handicap the races. With this massive feel good convention, they've interjected disunity and dullness. So with the bore that the Republican Convention will surely be, I expect them to greatly exaggerate the excitement and party unity.
We can guess how their gathering of power, their Pandaemonium, is going to play out...it is the only way it can play out.
It will be a frenzy of Patriotism, Heritage, and the Military and not necessarily in that order.
There will be flags everywhere (conspicuously absent at the DNC stage. There will be non-stop veterans of the war. There will be appeals to the "Heritage" of America. It is going to be a grand guignol spectacle of some massively drug-overdosed frenzy of Flag/Military/Country. They will play Sousa, they will point out the Menace, they will trumpet the DANGEROUS CHALLENGES. They will remind us we are at war. They will remind us we are a warrior country. They will remind us we are at war again.
And flags, and flags, and flags....... This will be a grand tribal stomp for the Republican Nativist Committee and their military-industrial-entertainment complex.
I love your imagery-- a gathering of power, a Pandaemonium, in the etymological sense of the word. Hyperbolic but it captures something so true about the Republican drive to do what is wrong for our country and the world.
Dem,
I commerce in hyperbole and yet...
when it comes to that malign leech that has fastened itself on to America that is the modern GOP...
my hyperbole often turns out in the end to be an underestimate, an overly generous assessment.
The DNC tried to appeal to mind and heart.
The RNC is going to go straight for the reptile sub-brain.
Lux puts it well, and puts it in the proper order: "..mind and heart." It seems like a lifetime since we've had Democrats appeal to the mind and not be afraid that they'll be accused of talking down to the public or some other astounding ridiculous right wing meme.
I loved the standing ovation that wouldn't end. Great gesture.
observor2,
And it was unscripted and threw the schedule slightly out of whack. Everyone saw just how large is the reservoir of good will that Clinton still has with us democrats.
This militates against my pessimism. I long felt that the enormous effort the GOP exerted to besmirch his name and memory might have lasting effect.
I was wrong, the people ignored those efforts.
He had me at hello.
Most politicians say they care about people, some of them mean it, but very few of them manage to convey it in a genuine way. Bill Clinton does it masterfully.
Barack does to. And that bodes well.
It's been observed many times around here that if Hillary hadn't been running, he'd have been all about Barack from the start. Heck, probably from years before. It might not have even been good for either of them!
At least they stopped calling him racist. A new low in dem politics.
Watching his wife's speech, he comforted the survivors of two fellow Dems that recently passed. One on each arm, hugging them when Hillary honored them.
Then he was beaming with pride and love watching his wife give the best speech of her career.
The next night he had them eating out of his hand, the best in the business.
Not only are the Clintons great Americans, they are great people with big hearts. They should be honored and not attacked and called racists.
Hear the man.
I wonder when you know better than to listen to pundits about Obama: you know he loves America, you know he's not secretly Muslim, you know he would put country ahead of ambition, you know he's not an angry black man, etc. etc. why then do you believe those same pundits when it comes to the Clintons.
Honestly, according to the punditry, Clinton was toast the day Starr went public with Lewinsky. They have not been right about how the public feels about Clinton since then, not once. They dislike him and it baffles them that the public loves him. But then, think of Matthews talking about how everyone loves Bush43 when his approval rating was in the gutter.
You forget that Clinton won the votes of half the Democrats and that Obama's victory was a squeaker. Of course they are loved. Don't buy the narrative from the talking heads. they have yet to be right on anything from affirmative action to Iraq to Terry Schiavo to damn I wish I could think of something that begins with Z.
Clearthinker said "[Clinton] might not have had a 1st term for the 22nd Amendment. In 1988, the country was still in love with Ronald Reagan. He was the first president to get clipped by the 22nd Amendment...."
Actually Reagan was the second - Eisenhower was the first directly affected by the 22nd Amendment. Not that he likely would have run in 1960 anyway - he was 70 at the time of the election, but he was the first president to have served two terms after that amendment was passed.
I agree totally. After he spoke I realized how long it's been since we've heard a president speak with any intelligence or insight. Much as I was sick of Clinton's narcicissm in this primary, it was like having a drink of cool water after a long parched ride through the desert.
Another excellent and concise post from Lux.
Thanks for the positive post, LUD.
It was thrilling to see the Clinton love-fest in the hall. Those dedicated delegates are the loyal Dems I remember from past conventions.
After Hillary's speech, the talking heads looked stunned to find massive quantities of egg on their faces.
And the Republicans must have had an Uh-Oh moment when they saw Bill's pre-speech standing ovation. Surely the Republicans realize that they have not just Obama to obliterate, but they must revive the anti-Clinton talking points immediately. So they started with Hillary, of course. Let's watch and see if they do Bill too.
Thanks for the thanks. readytoblowagasket and you too, BevD!
I felt a little exposed making such an unabashed valentine to a great man, but since it's how some of us feel......
It worked out okay.
And President Clinton will be out on the huskings for Our Ticket . There is no one living or dead who connects better with the voters then "Bubba " when he is sincerely engaged -and after last night none can doubt that President Clinton is engaged in this most current battle for our nation future ,,and that means electing Obama /Biden !
Game on , I may be wearing an Obama/Biden jersey now -but just for "ol times sake" I rummaged through the closet and found my well worn Clinton cleats-.
Yessiree Bubba's back , and he's packing his usual heat -lets get ready to Rumble ya'll !
