Chet Edwards, Josh

Nancy Pelosi throw his name out back in early June after the  primaries. The sentence started out as a general comment about congressional critters being a good pool for potential VP nod. The rub, of course, is that he is Bush's current representative.

Chet was there with Hagel and Webb for the G. I Bill presser with Reid. All of his committee assignments put him in the thick of things and show he has worked  his way through the Pelosi Baltimore street gaunlet. (Pelosi became my significant other's favorite speaker when it was know that she went to Trinity College in DC.)

We all heard about the Pelosi Club during the  primary season. She is a force to be heard. My Gov. Manchin (a DLC type), Reid and Pelosi met the Friday after the last primary, the 7th. The Chet Edwards comment came out also on the 7th of June. This was at the RFK 40th anniversary celebration at the Newseum.

This blog has the clip of Pelosi first putting out his name.

Chet's assignments are Budget, Appropriations, DHS Appropriations, Energy Appropriations, Military and VA Approprations. He is  not a vet though Ft. Hood is in his district. I don't think there are any skeletons in his closet.

I am afraid I did not use the link feature correctly. New format for me.

Mea Culpa.

This is buzzing at the Orange Satan, too.

I think my reference to Pelosi in early June at the Newseum is a correction to my diary. (I work for a company involved in BIM, Building Information Management, and we had the Newsuem project. That's kismet.) Newsweek Tam Cam Video Blog posted the clip on 24 June.

There was a joint statement including Gov. Manchin on 4 June about ending the primary race. They three did meet on 7 June in th Capital.

"RFK and Campaign '68, with Frank Mankiewicz" was the event at the Newseum on the 7th. Tim Russert's passing pushed this off the radar.

Josh,

After Bill Moyers' Friday piece on The Business of Poverty I was doing some research. My then Congressman Bob Wise (WV-02) voted in 1999 for Gramm-Leach (or should I say Leech). Chet Edwards vote NAY. Another thing to recommend him.

Back when in 1978, Chet Edwards lost the Democratic primary for Congress to his former economic professor Phil Gramm by 115.

Obabm plays poker; knows how to bluff. Kaine has been too "giggly". This Edwards has played it straight with his answers about being vetted.

What is the theme of the night for the VP announcement? Veterans Security, Military Security, Economic Security? Look at this from today's Dallas Morning News:

http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/dn/latestnews/stories/081108dnmetchetedwards.43a832c.html

Mr. Edwards, 56, is a moderate, a respected voice on veterans and military issues and well regarded across the political spectrum. Colleagues describe him as a pivot between liberals and Blue Dogs – the bloc of budget cutters and gun rights backers – so he could help Mr. Obama reach swing voters.

As chairman of a subcommittee that controls billions in annual spending, he's already got more clout than most members of Congress. He's one of a dozen "cardinals" who serve under the even more powerful Appropriations Chairman, David Obey of Wisconsin.

Mr. Obey called Mr. Edwards one of the "top five or 10 House members" he knows in either party, "an incredibly nice, decent human being" who is "very, very tough minded. ... He is most definitely not a slashing partisan. He would be a very good salesperson for the president's legislative package."
