How's that Cone of Silence Work in Your Limo, Sen. McCain?

Many of us have wondered how the gaffe-prone McCain seemed so crisp in what was supposed to an impromptu, spontaneous "interview" at Saddleback.

The first question to McCain:

WARREN: Now my first question: was the "cone of silence" comfortable that you were in just now?

McCAIN: I was trying to hear through the wall.

A bit later:

WARREN: You got all my questions, good.

Curiouser and curiouser, because now we learn this delicious little crumpet,  from "abudabu's" diary over at DailyKos...

Rick Sanchez confronted Pastor Warren at 6:30p EST on CNN.  Warren admitted that McCain was not in the studio, but within the "cone of his Secret Service".  Under pressure, he admitted that he knew McCain was not in a "cone of silence", though he told the audience he was.  He tried to excuse this by saying he asked McCain point-blank whether he was listening, and was assured this was the case.

Sanchez's twitter post on the topic:

pastor rick warren just told me on air he thought mccain was in a cone of silence when he told people he was, though he wasn't. got it?

Is this going anywhere? Is anyone going to pick up on it?

I hope that everyone emails CNN and other media outlets expressing their outrage!

Warren lied! 'Just kiddin'!' doesn't work for this issue.

I am so angry. Perhpas McCain didn't 'listen' but bet you the election that his cohorts did and prepped him big time!

Warren should be ashamed! McCain obviously isn't capable of feeling shame.

How dare you question a POW that liked Reagan!
/snark off

They're calling it "Cone Gate."

This should be an easy case to pursue, because Warren is going to be pretty embarrassed and feel a responsibility to clear the air. I bet a little pressure will get a more public confirmation from him that McCain was in a position to cheat. He does not want to be seen as aiding McCain. While his immediate audience would probably be fine with that, Warren is interested in the broader audience as well and will not want to be seen as part of the evangelical republican cabal.

If Pastor Rick really did mislead everyone about McCain not being able to hear the questions in advance its little wonder that fewer and fewer people trust the clergy.

I think Pastor Rick got sum 'splainin to do!

you folks are really starting to sound desparate. sad.

Warren's a liar. What's to clear up? It's simple he lied, end of story.

Shall we use the right wingers own tactics against them?:

"He's lying about the 'cone of silence', what else is he lying about?"

Plenty, I bet. Obama's surrogates are going to have a field day with this, as they should.

McCain lied, in a church. Nice. Way to show off that credo.

Lying in church is what preachers do at least once a week. So what else is new?

But you've got a good point: Warren specifically asked McCain if he had been in the "cone of silence." McCain didn't say that he actually was stuck in traffice and but did not listen; he made a joke about trying to hear through the walls. If that wasn't lying, what was?

He used the cone like this:

I'd say it worked out just fine for him.

This is a grossly unfair article and the comments are demeaning.

'Everyone knows' that a true American patriotic hero like John McCain would never lie. 'Everyone knows' that television preachers would never lie to advantage republicans.

Therefore, everyone knows that Pastor Rick told the truth and that Senator McCain was in a 'cone of silence'. To even imply otherwise is to demean the patriotism of John McCain and the MSM will not allow you to do that.

And if Warren was able to get the original Cone of Silence from Get Smart, it worked perfectly!!!

This is the same as when Bush was obviously using a wire in the debate with Kerry. It will be tough to prove definitively, so most republicans and independents won't believe it.
