Today McCain compared Obama to Jackie Robinson, obviously trying to set Obama up as the "black candidate" and invoking the dog-whistle racism Republicans are known for.
Oh wait, it was Jesse Jackson Jr. that compared Obama to Jackie Robinson. I guess that's okay then.
Ha ha! Clever! What a zinger!
Except ... Jesse Jackson Jr. saying something to his base is one thing. But then if you imagine McCain saying the same thing to his very, very different base then it's not a valid extrapolation to assume that the same words from a very different speaker to a very different audience would have an identical effect. And so (I'm not telling you anything you don't already know) the same words from McCain would very likely have a very different intention behind them, as well as a very different effect on the audience.
But that's just to point out that you're being disingenuous, not to take anything away from the cleverness of attributing a quote to a different person and then revealing the true speaker in the first comment. Keep those zingers coming.
At least it wasn't Bill Clinton, that would be unforgivable.
The problem with your zingy zinger was that the comparison was made by ignoring the context. You had to ignore the context in order to pretend that the actual situation and your imaginary situation were equivalent.
Look at the words in the context in which they were spoken, considering who the speaker was, and the audience, and what the expected reaction in that audience would be, and what intention would explain someone trying to elicit that reaction from that audience, and see where that takes you.
Did you consider I considered?
Anyway, that's so pre-Unity.
McCain compares Hillary Clinton to Rocky Balboa. Oh wait; it was Hillary Clinton that made that comparison. I guess that is OK then!
At least it wasn't Senator Obama who compared her to a punch drunk fictional male boxer. That would be unforgivably sexist and demeaning. The very idea of comparing a distinguished woman to a fictional over testosteroned man, who must surely have had at least three testicles, would be an outrage to Hillary Clinton's womanly dignity!
Better for you, you wouldn't have liked the smell.
Thanks so much for the dramatic and pithy demolishing of all that racism business. And just think, if we'd only thought to deny the existence of context from the start, we could have saved ourselves so much trouble.
