McCain's going for a Hail Mary
Fox is now reporting that both Pawlenty AND Mittens are out of the running.
The conservative conventional wisdom was that Pawlenty and Mittens were the "safe" choice for V.P. The whole "do no harm" bit.
Well, apparently McCain has ruled them out. This opens the door to lots of interesting possibilities: Kate Baily Hutchison, Sarah Palin, Joe "Jowl" Lieberman, and Tom Ridge.
It goes to show just how effective Obama's speech last night was. McCain believes he has no choice but to go for a pro-choice running mate, or a woman to win this thing.
The media narrative last week was that Obama "blinked" when selecting Biden. Will the favor be returned when McCain does the same? Don't hold your breath.

He has to try to appear as a Maverick because he has nothing else. He is betting that his base is so afraid of Obama that they will hold their noses and vote for him regardless.
If he goes pro-choice I suspect that the base won't hold their noses, they won't get near the stink in the ballot box.

I have written practically the same words, so obviously I agree. It's probably worth some kind of gamble on a game-changer, cuz he's facing really tough odds.
