Okay, Fess Up and I'll Play Nice
Was it yesterday or today people were saying, "Hillary should put out an 'I don't approve of this message' on the McCain ads, but she won't. She endorsed him and she'll pay for that."
So here it is:
I don't approve of this message.
So here's your chance, all of you Obama fans. Let's hear your chant of approval, how Hillary popped out an unequivocal message of unity and support, an anti-McCain slam that nails shut her conviction. Recommend this motherfucker up to 100. Rock the charts. Show me you're serious about this unity I keep hearing about. Show me you want to win in November, not that you want to keep fighting primary grievances and repeating primary slurs.
Let me hear you say "Yeah!!!"

I give you my Rec for the sake of us all; let's hope that Hillary & Bill at least do enough this week that nobody with a half a brain will point at them if Obama fails; that's all we can ask for at this point. She can't deliver him anything but as long as she does enough then it's solely on the shoulders of Obama to carry this through.

Well, I was one who said yesterday, that there was no need for her to have to do so, and I gave her props for how she has been supportive of Obama, so good for her. I look forward to watching her convention night, and I am sure that both her and Bill will do a great job of promoting party healing.
Keep your eyes on the prize folks:
It is The Supreme Court. Do not ever lose sight of that fact. Do you want McCain to be the one who gets to pick the person who will replace Justice Stevens!.
Make sure you have your priorities in order.

I think since she conceded Clinton has been very supportive. I think it is really unfair to hang the actions of a handful of PUMA dead enders on Clinton. After all she wasn't even able to control the actions of her senior campaign staffers.
I think the supposed dispute between the Obama and Clinton camps is largely a product of talking hairdos, and should be dismissed as the latest media echo.

Lovely, Rip. Folks, step along, a big tent, we can even have a few Luddites raving against progress here, understand where he's coming from, I'm certainly no angel of mercy, but really Rip, the Recs are not about me - they're about the concept. I said I was waiting for a hand across the aisle, but I'm not waiting anymore - Hillary did a bang-up job of expressing solidarity, and I'm using the moment to push it through. It's just a small band, a small blog, but this is my hood, where I've been hanging out. Think globally, act locally. So hold contempt if you want, but I'm trying to take it a step further. Buy you a beer?

Preconditioning the remote possibility of your support on our self-abasement is no way to reconcile differences with people who've had quite enough of being called "bots", far too much of your petty hatred, and far too much patience while seeing our dreams for turning this country around flung like Dutch shoes into the gears of the Clinton and PUMA machines. It is manipulation at its worst for you to command any act from those who simply have supported the only Democrat left standing and have never asked anything more than the same from you.

It's an epiphany, a seed of salvation. We all know McCain is a moron who's indebted to the wrong type of people, the ones who've taken us into this mess. And quite frankly I'm interested more in people power, so I'm asking all of you, do the right thing, suspend your doubt, find the spirit you've been really talking about all these months, and let's kick ass. We can start a revolution right here, right now. They talk about fights at the convention? Well here's a blog that can turn around in 24 hours, get past the turmoil. Eins zwei drei. If she knocks it out of the park, I'll rec this AND put up a blog praising her for the speech. (I'm already donating $25/mo between now and November to her, so I'm doing my part for unity.)
And I praised her for her concession speech - though I did say I wished it had been delivered on June 3 instead of June 6. So it won't be the first time I've given her props.

2. I think it is fair to say that Hillary Clinton has been lock stock and barrel behind the democratic nominee. People who can't see that are blind. The people around her are another thing.
I am pretty tired of the back and forth-out there and in here. I guess it's a couple days for you to have your catharsis and then we can get on to the real fight. I have no doubt Mrs. Clinton is ready for battle. But then again she is a grown up.

Des, I again compliment her June 7 speech, and I posted before June 3 that she would concede graciously. I appreciate her work on this message, and want to see much more on the anniversary of women's suffrage.
It isn't, as a friend of mine wrote this morning to me, that Obama needs her. The point is that Democrats need her help to take control of each branch of the government. We need all Democrats, and most especially her help now. She needs Obama for the same reason. We need the hug for the same reason. Democrats aren't the lockstep party, she's right, but let's be aspirational and come together more than we have. Of course the longtime Obama fans like me appreciate it, but I think all Democrats appreciate her solidarity and leadership at this time, and look to her for more.
Was that good enough?

You know, I can't stand Wolfson, but I actually thought it was good advice. Poorly timed? Yeah. Could it have been handled internally? Yeah. I'm still hoping against hope that this is a well-thought-out orchestrated plan to use the media's whoredom against them and showcase unity for everyone. Imagine if the week ended with Bill, Barack, Hillary, and Biden directing everything they've got at the GOP. That would be awesome. So much awesomer than rehashing the primary stuff again and again and again and again and again.

Desidero is one of those self absorbed people who has to make everything all about them.
I posted what Hillary said, on Ripper's Selective Hear thread, two full hours before Des decided to make it all about Des the narcissist.
Here is what I posted, and I did not feel the need to rub salt in other's wounds, like Des does.
By the way: check out Desidero's thread, just before this one, and you will see that she/or he has not the slightest intention of promoting party unity.
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/25/hillary-clinton-at-the-dn_n_121179.html
DENVER — Hillary Rodham Clinton preached unity Monday in her first appearance at the Democratic National Convention, insisting she is doing everything possible to prove her full support for Barack Obama.
The New York senator was quick to put Republican John McCain in her sights, saying the de facto GOP nominee was running ads using her words to try to divide the Democrats.
Clinton's response: "I'm Hillary Clinton, and I do not approve that message."
"There is no doubt in anyone's mind that this is Barack Obama's convention," she said, adding that it is only natural for there to be some lingering issues to resolve after a tough primary.
"It would have been the same way if I had won and Barack was here supporting the unity of the party. This was a hard fought campaign and there was a lot of intensity and passion associated with it, in part because of the historic nature of our two candidacies."
Part of her job at the convention will be letting those delegates know "that however they decide to vote, we will all be united behind Senator Obama," she said.
"We have a very good working relationship and it is through that relationship that we have worked out a lot of the issues," she said. "I have done more in the last two months than people in my position historically have done and I am going to keep doing it."

Raise your glass to the hard working people
Lets drink to the uncounted heads
Lets think of the wavering millions
Who need leaders but get gamblers instead
Spare a thought for the stay-at-home voter

If we can use our anger at Bush and the Republican Party in a positive way, we can coalesce to run as many of those f*ckers as possible out of federal, state, and local governments this fall.

I'm of the opinion that Hillary should stay off the campaign trail unless she can improve on her desultory performance thus far. I don't blame her, BTW. She finally really got into campaigning on her own behalf, but doesn't love the whole circus for it's own sake. I am not surprised that she can't transfer that enthusiasm to Obama nor would I expect it under the circumstances.
Bill is another matter. If he can finally decide that the "Dick McBushes" are the enemy instead of Obama, Bill Clinton could be awesome on the stump. I watched a bit of an interview with him not long ago in which he practically begged to be sent out to campaign for Obama. Recalling how much Bill loves retail politikin', this skeptic didn't doubt his sincerity one little bit, not one little bit.
Bill Clinton, if he can remember who/what it is he's campaigning for and/or against and stick to the script, would once again show us all that he is still the undisputed master of the game. Nobody does it better. Nobody.
Damn, it would be such fun to watch Bill Clinton ripping it up on the campaign trail for Obama/Biden and the Democratic party....

All right....Ben Smith put up videos of Clinton speaking to the NY delegation and to Hispanics in Denver today.
If she delivers a speech tomorrow night with the force she delivered her remarks today, she'll absolutely bring the house down.
Giving up the rec now in hopes of a roof-raiser tomorrow...

And in hopes Hillary rocks the house.

But, since we're doing the whole Unity thing now, here's a song for Stephanie. RIP, Congresswoman.

It was a good reply by Hillary. I'm delighted.
Why wouldn't I be?
I got over being annoyed with and mad at Hillary a long time ago - once she finally got that it was over and endorsed Obama. I'm just happy to have her around. We need her. I don't happen to think her career is over by any means.
August 25, 2008 10:11 PM | Reply | Permalink
She knows the only way her career could possibly be threatened is if she's seen in any way to be impairing Obama.
The Oliver Stone junkie in me is a little worried about tomorrow. But the objectivist in me says Hillary's going to absolutely crush tomorrow's speech.
Incidentally, Mark Warner's the "keynote", but Hillary Clinton speaks after him. Warner's going to go all positive in his speech, so I think Hillary's been scheduled for the specific purpose of lowering ye olde boom on Senator Straight Talk.

Hey Tena. As Des-ignated DJ this eve, I also have full authority to sign that daft bastard Des up to anything I want. So.... he says YES to giving up annoyance. (I remain unsure whether he'll give up the madness - in a clinical sense - but halfway is halfway.) Tonight, it's nothin' but a Love Shack in here.

for decades the Republicans have been sending millionaires in front of us, and those millionaires posed to us as if they were one of us, "commoners".
Now I saw a real person. Someone who really is one of us.
Very emotional moment.

I admit, I was stirred by Michelle's speech. I couldn't get Shirley Chisholm's 1972 campaign slogan out of my head: "Unbought And Unbossed". You can't buy the emotion and intensity she delivered.

I can't wait for Hillary and Bill to bring the hammer down on McCain. I've never been much for political speeches and I won't be watching in primetime. I'll have to check in at TPM for the Youtube later, cuz that's also prime phonebanking time. If people are watching it on TV I'll ask what they think, it's an excellent icebreaker.
But I'm sure my delayed gratification will be well worth it. I'd watch Barack Obama read the phonebook, I think he's that good a speaker. But Hillary can hit it out of the park when she's on and Bill is one of the great masters. This convention to me is gonna be like watching the White Sox score 10 runs in an inning hitting back to back to back to back to back homeruns.

Surely you mean the Phillies? (Think swing state.) ;-)
Ok, 5 consecutive for the ChiSox, maybe save 3 for the Phils, and a couple for the Cards. Deal?

Quinn the Phils are my favorite NL team having lived in South Jersey for 12 years. So yeah, it'd be about the same.
I worked the Great Northeast in Philly for Kerry on election day in 2004. Met David Morse the actor who came by the campaign office to shake a few hands and thank us for getting out the vote. We had a huge turn out and pulled in about 90% of the Philly vote for Kerry. More than offset the hillbillies and the Amish who voted for Bush and won the state.

Man ... I really thought y'all would have had this worked out by now! It's like some sort of Groundhog Day thing .... whatever.
BTW: I think Clinton needed to hang back for awhile. It allowed the attacks of the primary to dissipate a bit so they aren't effective GOP ammo.
The anti-unity meme in the media seems to have been quite helpful, especially the way they put the responsibility for reconciliation on Obama's shoulders(even though it's annoyed some supporters to no end). It will be difficult to say "How can he campaign with Hillary after all she said?" when they just spent two months saying he needs to reach out to her! It's taken some of the bite out of that line of attack.
Now her actions will be far more effective and seem more genuine than if she had just jumped right on the Obama band wagon. Also, now she's fresh right when people report being tired of hearing about Obama all the time. This is the exact right time for the Clintons to roll out!
It'd be cool if everyone could just lighten up and enjoy the ride. The democrats clearly have the upper hand for the final push!!! This could be fun.

Desi,
Still narcissistic as ever. I thought we established the other night that you would for Nader and that I forbid you from giving money to Obama and the DNC.
Your world is now perfect. You can sulk in silence.
Of course, who would take note then?
I do admit your innovations to try to keep the attention on yourself, however.
NOT rec'ed.

Keep pondering, CT, the rest are piling up their arms in the corner, passing around the whiskey canteen and pondering the next step in good cheer. No time to sulk, even Nader's got the positive approach on this one. Tally forth. Achilles is engaged.

All I know is somehow you keep thinking that the convention is about you (as in personally, not you as a generic citizen). Of course, who can expect you to keep your word, or expect consistency?
I don't need you to experience party unity.
I was more impressed when you tried to post substantive things -- which was before Hillary suspended (not conceded) her campaign.

I am in for a recommendation and a hearty "Fuck the past" if it makes our future election efforts run a little smoother.
I even agreed with Des not too long ago on a post about Susan Eisenhower abandoning the GOP just to vote for Obama, though I hope some of the more vitriolic and context-free rhetoric directed toward Barack ends at this spot.
Too many dems doubting Obama at this stage will stop the slow trickle of republicans voting their principals this year.
Confidence and solidarity are HOT.

Now can we get Hillary to step up and say she disapproves of how Rendell is bashing the media for praising Obama (after Hillary lost the primary), how Begala continues to harp on that sexist thing (like Michelle didn't experience any of that) and how Carville continues to say Obama is doing it all wrong and the first day of the convention was a total waste of time. When I hear her renounce that, then I'm with her!

I think it was well-put.
The problem is that McCain is now using Clinton's anti-Obama rhetoric, which is unfortunate.
A sound bite is not going to fix that. Clinton is now going to have explain why she thinks Obama is a better choice than McCain, and why she's changed her mind.
And what she says about it needs to be credible.
