Petraeus Says Success In Iraq Was Possible Without The Surge!

This is amazing news! Caught this tidbit over at Think Progress but the full article is HERE

I have to only assume that team Obama is aware of these reports, including the report of the definite time line the Iraqi's have secured and are planning a 1, 2 combo!

seems like the military and the Iraqi leadership are getting behind Senator Obama??? or at least anticipating that he may be the next president.

After the convention, they are going to shred him up.

You hoping for that?

More Like I am predicting the future.

McCain's not going to pick Petraeus or Powell, they have just been floating names to keep some of the spotlight on them and make the media curious about McCain's Veep choice.

There are currently only two things that McCain can do to get the media's attention:
- Attack Obama
- Screw Up (Gaff)
And even screwing up doesn't get him much attention because they just give him a pass anyway.

This is the most relevant graf from the article referenced:

Petraeus is careful not to credit all the progress to the surge of U.S. troops in 2007. The sea change came last year from a series of movements now known as the Awakening, when Sunnis, organizing around traditional tribal leaders, decided to turn on Al Qaeda as "an organization that embraces an extremist ideology, employs indiscriminate violence, and practices oppressive social customs," in the general's words. One of those customs was a ban on smoking. "That was the turning point when they cut the fingers off the first person who was smoking," he jokes. "Can you imagine an Anbar sheik being told he can't smoke?" So would the Sunni Awakening have succeeded without the surge? Possibly, he concedes, but the surge came at that time and helped empower Sunni leaders, paying their fighters and backing them up on the streets. This is where Seneca the Younger comes in: "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity."

Thanks, Wigmarx. It would have been nice of sean to include that in his initial post. ;-)

Thank you for posting the excerpt! I was just a little excited at the time of posting.

And just add a little something, despite the nuance of the statement it can, and in my opinion, be pushed just as I titled the posted by the campaign.

It deflates McCain surge rhetoric, and forces an explanation. And although I have only begun to follow politics, I believe that whenever a something is explained it's bad for the GOP most of the time...as they don't do nuance.

All this pre-supposes that there has been success in Iraq. As if the success of the surge was something everyone agreed on. And it isn't.

Amazing that Petraeus was ever acceptable to Bush and now McCain when he refuses to play footsie with their insane "let America take over the world" point of view. Petraeus has enough sense not to put out a stupid banner "Mission Accomplished" followed by continued deaths and maiming of our military in Iraq. Only GW would stoop to such stupidity. I say, make Petreaus the new Sec. of Defense. He surely cut the rug out from under the McCain/Bush twins point of view.

Who is "they" who will "shred him(who) up? sorry I just did not get what you said. Me dull today!

The Obama camp will shred McCain...

The Obama camp stockpiles ammo. They probably didn't even plan to use the Gramm's "Whiners" and McCain's "$5M is rich" quotes until after the conventions, but smelled blood with the "I don't know how many houses I have" statement and ran with it.

I think the plan is to wait until after the GOP convention when McCain is locked into his public money and then the Obama camp will fire away.

Prime pieces of attack ammo for Obama include:
-the above Patraeus quote
-Iraq wanting the US out and the US government -signing off on the plan,
-McCain's working against Webb's New GI Bill,
-McCain being for torture.
-McCain admitting to know little about the economy, -McCain's record on Women's issues

-His infamous temper
-not knowing the difference between Sunni/Shia

Not knowing where to locate Iraq & Pakistan on a map.

Here's the original quote by Petraeus, without the spin by the TPM lefty:

Possibly, he concedes, but the surge came at that time and helped empower Sunni leaders, paying their fighters and backing them up on the streets. This is where Seneca the Younger comes in: "Luck is what happens when preparation meets opportunity."

That's right. The surge provided Iraqi and Americans soldiers with the preparation necessary to take advantage of the Sunni Awakening.

When Petraeus says success in Iraq was possible without Gen. David Howell Petraeus at the helm, that will be news!
