Rep. John Lewis doesn't consult with McCain...

IN the Saddleback Forum McCain was asked to name three wisest people he'd depend on for advice should he become President.  He names General Petraus, Meg Whitman and Rep. John Lewis.

Now to put this in proper perspective, this was one of the two questions both candidates were told of before hand so they could prepare their answer according to Rick Warren press releases.

Now why is this interesting ?  Well this is news to John Lewis.  According to a Mother Jones Blog (Available in Full HERE) :

But even though McCain has now repeatedly cited Lewis as a role model and potential adviser, McCain has not established a relationship with the Georgia Democrat in the 22 years they have served in Congress together. At the time of McCain's Selma speech, a Lewis associate told my colleague David Corn that McCain has never been close to Lewis. Lewis was not told about McCain's speech in Selma in advance, nor was he invited to attend.

In response to McCain's latest invocation of his name, Rep. Lewis said in a statement requested by Mother Jones, "I cannot stop one human being, even a presidential candidate, from admiring the courage and sacrifice of peaceful protesters on the Edmund Pettus Bridge or making comments about it." But, he added, "Sen. McCain and I are colleagues in the US Congress, not confidantes. He does not consult me. And I do not consult him."

Why did McCain name Rep. Lewis?  Somebody he has never consulted before and someone who he has, at best, a professional  relationship with?

And Lewis should add: "And I endorsed your opponent, Senator Barack Obama, the man you continue to insist is bordering on treason for the simple reason he is running for President, you dolt!"

Good catch! Rec'd.

John Lewis - Black, Democrat, Civil Rights leader, Georgia.

I'm sure the above attributes of Rep. Lewis had nothing to do with McCain's 'choice'....or

Pandering at it's worse? You decide. I already did.

McCain: "I see black people!"

Also note he mentioned his very awkward visit to a black women's quilt group in MS about that same time, where he and Cindy bought some quilts from the nice elderly black ladies.

I just find this ridiculous. I mean what is he thinking. I'll name drop somebody who I barely know and never consult with and nobody will ever find out?

I mean Meg Whitman was a blatant pander but at least she is a McCain adviser. I bet Carly Fiornia was pissed, but then again EBay has a better reputation that HP when Carly left.

What he said.

It makes me laugh and cry at the same time... On this he is caught with his pants down and looks very foolish. This is like a young boy trying to get the 'right answer'... looking after he says it out loud 'hey, did you buy it, did you like that?'. Some who don't think about it might buy his bs and at least in the crowd he was speaking in they might think 'see he is not racist'. I guess those are the people he was hoping to fool.

In McCain's defense, maybe he read Walking With the Wind and conceived a respect for the writer...?

possible but not plausible. A man he has 'never' consulted with would be the second most important person he would consult 'after' he becomes president. Nice try though on his behalf.

Hey I used to have some respect for McCain, would have voted for him, some time ago... but he lost that long ago and I keep watching for signs of intelligence.

He probably could have said Joe Watkins instead and got away with it.

Or Alan Keyes!!!!!

Here's what I worry about..we have noticed in the past that our candidates can say something evocative of a good heart and the opposition takes the statement up and put the worst possible spin on it. So what happens is that when the candidates try to send a message of goodness, the other side spikes the message with cynicism.

What if McCain was trying to send a signal that in this at least he had some wisdom and a good heart?

I don't want them to demonize everything BHO says, but neither do I want us to demonize everything JM says. It may have been he was sending us a message in sincerity...
