A Woman Has to Say It: McCain Meltdown HISTRIONICS!

The word "histrionic" has traditionally conjured up the image of a deranged woman.  Indeed, the word itself comes from a Greek word meaning "uterus."  And it's a word or an image that women politicians strive to avoid:  For them it would doom a candidacy from the start.

Histrionics.  Soap Opera.   Drama Queen.  Hysterical Melt Down.  John McCain has given us all of that and more this week:

Me. Me. Me. Me. Me. Me. Me. Me.

♪♪♪  Put that to music.  ♪♪♪

You have the proverbial female opera star tantrum:

Hizzoner mcHistrionic!

On a world stage.  By a supposed political leader.

John McCain has given us several days of histrionics.  Several days, which suddenly put his personality into perspective.  The narcissism.  The unpredictability.  The chaos. The lack of insight.  The lies while trumpeting Hizzoner.  The anger.  It's all come together now:  Histrionics on steroids!

Contrast that with No Drama Obama.

If you go back to John McCain's biography, it all fits together.  The maverick, as one blogger has incessantly told us the last couple days, is a calf that keeps going astray and has to be rescued.  Well, apparently our "hero" was prone to tantrums even as a toddler.  His famed angry outbursts, which go way, way back, have been not just  outbursts of rage - but a means of attention-seeking and manipulation.  His famous escapades at Annapolis.  Same thing!  His POW status - I hate to say it folks, but I can do this as a woman - trumpeted for dramatic, self-serving, histrionic ends.  Think of all the ways John McCain has acted out.  Then imagine if a woman had done these things.  She'd have been branded as hysterical long ago!

The strange thing here is that Sarah Palin, for all her negatives, has not been described as hysterical.  But for sure the man who named her as his "second" was looking for a spark for his moribund campaign.   And boy did he get a bang for that!  She drew crowds.  She energized the base.  She drew attention.  Away from him.

John McCain, Hysterical Drama Queen, needs to have the attention on HIM.  It can't be the financial mess we're in.  It has to be HIM.  It can't be "country first."  It has to be HIM.  It can't be "leadership" (for the country, the world, whatever).

♪ ♫ ♬♭♯  It has to be HIM.  ♪ ♫ ♬♭♯

And if it isn't HIM, we're gonna see a Melt Down.  A Soap Opera.  Chaos.  Histrionics and Hysterics!

So I urge you to pass this along:  At a time when our country is in peril of a financial melt-down, one man wants all the attention.  And to grab it, he'll appoint a clueless Trophy woman as his "second."  To grab it, he'll disrupt delicate bi-partisan negotiations in the Congress.  To grab it, I can only imagine the international chaos he could get us into.  Take a little time and think this through.  Put it together with what you know of his biography, his MO.  Envision the future if you can stand the thought of so much chaos.

But please, for the love of God, vote for Barack Obama.

We and the world need:  No Drama.  Obama.

(We don't need more hysterics.)

Excellent points, I agree entirely. Hysterical male behavior, 100%.

NO JOY!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpcUxwpOQ_A&feature=related

We need to get this meme out!

user-pic

Please note. I am awaiting word from Genghis as to what word he prefers instead of meme.

I'll work in a bi-partisan way to find the word!

user-pic

While awaiting the "word" from Genghis, you can go here and look at Destor's avatar, which is a perfect depiction (sorry, Destor..) of mcShame's Personality:

http://tpmcafe.talkingpointsmemo.com/profile/destor23

Look closely at the photo. Too bad we can't enlarge that. mcShame in spades!

Beaker McCain!

You will be receiving a bill for spewed coffee clean up.

Brilliant.

user-pic

I will gladly pay it!

user-pic

Good post. I love the Beaker video. But please stop saying "meme."

user-pic

What word do you prefer? Frame? I'll concede to whatever word you choose.

Context?

user-pic

JasonEverettMiller places his bet on context.

We need an Intrade market here.

Or perhaps we should convene a White HOuse meeting?

user-pic

How about just get the word out?

Not sure if you saw from my other thread, but I cross-posted you at dagblog: http://dagblog.com/index.php?q=node/84 Thanks for that.

user-pic

Bless you, Genghis! Bless you!!!

Savin' the Republic, you are!

user-pic

Gotta run it by a Bushit Focus Group.

BTW: Did you hear that McScreamer was a POW?

Would that be HMS, Hysterical Male Syndrome, which leads to HMS, His Majesty's Ship... of State, going nowhere?

user-pic

Why, Jane, I think you've got it!

The HMS Titanic!

Hey, TheraP, did you see over on HuffPo that discussion about something being wrong with McCain's left eye? There was a whole range of possible reasons given and rejected, including whether he has a cyst pressing on his brain because of the metastasizing melanoma. I'm not being mean here, but if his brain is affected it might explain his increasingly erratic behavior. If so, better it should come out now because for my money the two scariest words for the present are "President Palin."

user-pic

My speculation on that is the puffiness due to multiple surgeries on that side of his face. Unless he's had a stroke. I think it's the former.

Regardless... the man is completely unfit for high office due to his judgment, temperament, and so on.

I'm keeping my eye on the ball. He is mentally and emotionally unstable. The reason for that is immaterial to the decision that he is unfit!

user-pic

Bless you, Destor! You've done your part to save the Republic!

I feel like I'm ready for my colonoscopy now. There isn't anymore coming out.

Now THAT is some serious funny shit! Please don't say stuff like that when people are still drinking their coffee!

I agree with the assessment of McCain, but "histrionic" does not share the same etymology as "hysterical." The latter comes from the Greek word for womb, but the former derives from the Latin "histrionicus" which means actor.

user-pic

Thank you for your assistance. We therapists use the two words interchangeably. And you are correct on the derivation. As for "hysterical," originally it was used for female complaints, which they believed were due to a "wandering uterus."

It's enormously helpful to see how the two meanings dovetail.

And I just love how people on the web can assist each other.

Thanks again!

user-pic

If tpm still had a feature for making corrections, I'd change the title to:

McCain Meltdown Hyterics

I am a little concerned that Sarah Palin, with her mastery of not only Greek but all the major classical languages (still only proficient in Sanskrit), will sieze on this etymological point to blunt the "histrionic" attack. But even the link to thespians carries the sort of gender-tinged put down like what TheraP is suggesting. So I still say, run it!

So because you're a woman you can insult women and it's okay?

user-pic

How did I insult women?

Perhaps when you become less clueless you can presume to speak for your gender.

user-pic

Do you mean like how Sarah spoke so well for women, you and the Rebulican Party while being interviewed by to Katie Couric?

user-pic

If a MALE said the things about WOMEN that "TheraP" says here about McLame, that MALE would be hammered by the likes of "TheraP" as being S-E-X-I-S-T.

Female sexism is alive and well.

user-pic

find the comment where I've ever called anybody sexist!

user-pic

Do you mean like calling your wife (or any woman) a trollop or cunt... regardless of whether it is in front of anyone else or not (like reporters)?

Okay. Stop. I know, two wrongs don’t make a right. But two wrongs made the 08 Republican ticket.

Apparently McCain's definition of leadership is spelled "M" "E."

This is the "character" that his staff was going to make the central focus of his campaign in place of issues. Sort of went awry when Bush and Paulson decided to frighten Congress into handing over $2000 taxed from every man, woman and child in America to the idiot thieving gamblers on Wall Street, didn't it?

I like "histrionic" but slightly prefer "prima donna." They do both carry the popular implication of an irrational or even hysterical female, don't they? The image they don't carry is "leader."

user-pic

Prima Donna.

5 The word I was searching for this morning. Yes, if there were a feature to go in and edit a post, I'd add that right now!

user-pic

don't ask me how that "5" snuck in there!

From John McCain's own mouth came this:

"I have craved distinction in my life," McCain wrote in his 2002 political memoir, "Worth the Fighting For." "I have wanted renown and influence for their own sake. That is, of course, the great temptation of public life. ... I have never been able to conquer it permanently, but I have tried."

Now you tell me???

It is called being a Drama King!

user-pic

But "Queen" is ever so much more powerful in this context. It emasculates him. Shows him for the hussy he's become.

user-pic

:) ♪ ♫ ♬ ♪

um, no. I don't want to use "emasculate." I don't want to do that to him or to any man. And I like the term "hussy" for itself, not to be used as an insult but because of the qualities which I think are great, as embodied in that word. As you see, it means a lot of things, defined negatively, in a male context. I renounce, reject and denounce that context.

I'd rather call him a Drama King, or a Bitter Prima Don.

user-pic

Bitter Prima Don.

Or from below: Wee Drama Prince.

I concede: I bow to the wisdom being urged here.

And I apologize to any women who felt offended.

Thank you! ;)

How about humans who were offended?

heh. Human? I thought of you as the resident smiling mushroom cloud. You claim you are the smiling orange flower. ;)

Once a Wee Drama Prince, Always A Wee Drama Prince.

McCain is pathetic. He always engages in faux macho bluster, while all the time living like a prince, off the wealth of his very own Sugar Mommy.

Excellent Blog. A great big recommend from me.

user-pic

Thank you kindly, liam.

You are very welcome Thera.

Do me a favor please. I am trying an experiment with the new blog access feature. Please click on the following link and see if it will give you access to my my recent blogs, in order. If it does, please click some of them up. There is some lovely juicy gossip on them, to fill the time before the debate.

user-pic

I see blogs. I can click on them. I will now read the lovely juicy gossip. (and so may others...)

user-pic

Folks, liam's been a roll. Definitely click the link he's put above and enjoy.... Yes, something to do before the debate. The debate where our "hero" (our Bitter Prima Don or Wee Drama Prince - take your pick) likely has things in store that no one could have predicted.

user-pic

I just love Beaker. He is so talented!!! He does the classics so well. Here is another one he does that is just amazing.

Beaker sings Classical

user-pic

Great Post btw TheraP. I could not agree more. I love the Ode to me me me vid. It is perfect for McSame.

I think it's premature to call McCain hysterical unless/until he sky dives into the debate dressed as Elvis.

But given his predilection for stunts, I wouldn't be surprised.

user-pic

Histrionic has nothing to do with cross dressing. It literally is a character disorder.

Credit Where Credit Isn't Due: McCain and Bush's Kabuki Theatre

Now we know why McCain hired the Bush contingent.

It emerged in the White House briefing today that McCain called Bush and asked him to initiate a meeting today at 4 pm at the White House, putatively for him to "deal with" the crisis.

That is, McCain asked Bush to help him create an trifecta: To try to lend some credence to McCain's desperate assertion that a suspension of his campaign is necessary, in effect either avoiding a debate in which he would face critical questions about his stance on the economy or marching in claiming "victory"; attempting to co opt the financial crisis thereby trying to put an end to his plummeting in the polls created by his flailing positions on the economy--perhaps best reflected by his statement days ago that the "fundamentals of the economy are strong"; and perhaps buying more time for Sarah Palin after her embarrassing photo op at the UN yesterday, by moving her debate forward as well.

Here's how it happened, according to Q and A at the WHB:

McCain emailed Bush asking for the 4 P.M. meeting. Now, one reasonably might ask, why is today such a necessity for McCain, if his interest is solely the national good?

Because it is before the debate. McCain hopes to stage a meeting at the White House, thereby, with Bush's cooperation, lending plausibility to his claim to need to suspend his campaign. Then, if Republicans, in their own electoral interest, can be persuaded to come to agreement, before the debate, he would claim--in an act of utter stage management--to have "resolved" the crisis. Thereby hoping to take the heat off on his past careening stances and sliding polls and staunch the bleeding on the polls--before the debate.

This is Kabuki Theatre masquerading as substance--no different than what we saw at the U.N. yesterday.

It is utterly stage managed, utterly cynical, and utterly unrelated to the substantive deliberation necessary to actually resolve these matters on the merits and for our nation's future, rather than for short-term and desperate political advantage.

These occurrences are equally important for what they indicate about McCain's governing style as they are for their impact upon democratic process: impulsive acts that rely on drama and theatrical posture rather than substantive reasoning and long-term deliberation; a strong willingness to sacrifice substantive reasoning, deliberative process, and even prior structures and agreements to immediate political need; an attempt to reach outcomes through last minute stage management rather than substantive argument.

These should create deep concern for anyone who wishes for a change in governmental process from the past eight years.

We have an economy, rather than a campaign, to rescue. Putting nation before politics means putting all attempts to resolve it before political attempts to co opt it--and to move towards one's commitments, rather than towards a more immediate and short-term salvation.

The histrionics word is perfect.
The way he has behaved says "I'm a SISSY, too", he is afraid to debate, to answer serious questions, afraid to release med records, her financial records etc. They're both wearing that sick half smile and trembling.

And speaking of afraid, he has turned his "Raging Pit Bull" Palin Pal into a "FRAIDY CAT" too. Whats the difference in a Pit Bull and a Fraidy Cat? Help me out...
How hard must it be to try and hide from reporters in 50 States? VERY.
How scared do you have to be the "hide so hard?" VERY.
They each talk big with swagger, oh gawd don't we know, but when it comes down to substance and reality, they cower like 2 nervous nellies.
And THEY want to lead this country??
Their "acting" has NOT impressed the audience favorably. They do NOT want to accept this awful truth...they're in such deep dung.
Sissy and the Fraidy Cat? USA 2008? I don't think so.
But what a show from the outside looking in!
The laughs are coming a mile a minute, Letterman, Stewart, Colbert...they can't get enough of it. Thanks, we needed that.
The hubris of offering themselves up as leaders of our country is so over-the-top, nothing is left but raucous laughter.

Why don't you call him a pussy or a fag?

user-pic

"I hate to say it folks, but I can do this as a woman . . . ."

Oh, we're sure you "hate" exercising your self-exemption from the prohibition against sexism of ALL kinds -- except the female.

Do you lack insight therefore not see your sexism -- and the narcissist rationalization in effort to justify it?

McCain Camp insiders say "Palin is clueless". They are in a panic.
