Alaska Independence Party story taken off of ABC News' online front page

Last night, the top news story on abcnews.com was about Palin's membership in the Alaska Independence Party. "Did Palin Want Her State to Secede?" asked the headline. A very relevant question for someone who is running for national office.

By this morning, the story is no longer the top story, in fact it can no longer be seen on the online front page at all. The story is still there, it hasn't been taken down (it's under Politics -> Political Punch). But this story needs to be played up! It needs to be heard!

If Palin really was a member of the AIP, then that really needs to be known by the general public. It is very very relevant for somebody who would be expected to uphold the territorial integrity of the U.S.

It says she was part of the group in 1994 and she KNEW EXACTLY what the goal was at the time. This lady with the million dollar smile has an extremist mind.

I'm shocked the media is riding soft on this one. This dilly-dallying around with secessionist politics...didn't we fight a Civil War over this issue. How can we seriously consider setting someone up for leadership of the federal government with this kind of political background.

Two reasons why they might be dilly-dallying are (1) so far, we have seen no hard evidence that Palin actually *was* a member of the AIP. The only source, so far and according to ABC news, is the AIP itself. If there were written evidence (a membership card? payment of membership dues?) I think it would blow up much faster. (2) In Alaska, the AIP is apparently not that fringe-- there is a story that the governor in 1994 was elected as an AIP member.

Either way, however, it is a story that should not be buried. Aren't we supposed to be getting to know this person? Her political history is obviously part of what we should get to know! (And to my mind, far more important, and appropriate for public discussion, than babies in her family.)

This is past history and it is stupid, just like the Ayers and Wright "issues" are on the Obama side. There is only one topic we should both with as far as Palin is concerned, and that is her "troopergate" abuse-of-power scandal. This other stuff is a distraction from our primary focus, which oughta be on McCain.

Except that it is not "old news". She addressed their convention in 2008 and spoke of how their goals were very similar. The video is on Jed.
