Gates saying opposite to Obama's Afghanistan policy
According to the Melbourne Age's Washington correspondent, Defense Secretary Robert Gates told the Armed Services Committee on Wednesday that they should lower their expectations about what a troop increase in Afghanistan might do, and that such an increase was not wanted at this time. This is tantamount to an effective declaration of loss in Afghanistan.
Has this been completely smothered by the bailout? Is there any coverage of it in America? I've seen no comment on the cable stations and neither McCain nor Obama seem to have reacted to it.

We'd all do well to recognize the history of Afghanistan with respect to outside occupiers. Rarely if ever do they succeed, and most fail miserably, due to such things as the remoteness of the area, the utter intransigence of the locals regarding dealings with those outsiders, and the fact that as a society, they are all but completely closed to anyone whose family is not known for generations in their tribal network.
In fact, Successful Occupations of Afghanistan is even a shorter book than Honest Republicans of the 20th and 21st Centuries.

If Gates doesn't remain Sec. of defense he needs to at least be a top advisor. Sorry I am digressing but I felt confidence when O was sitting on the table surrounded by genral's former Sec.s of state, defense and such. These are the minds we will always need regardless of party.
