GOP: Lose your house, lose your vote

The Michigan GOP is back to its old tricks of challenging voters on election day, only this year, there's a new twist. They're compiling their caging lists based on foreclosure records.

The chairman of the Republican Party in Macomb County Michigan, a key swing county in a key swing state, is planning to use a list of foreclosed homes to block people from voting in the upcoming election as part of the state GOP’s effort to challenge some voters on Election Day.

“We will have a list of foreclosed homes and will make sure people aren’t voting from those addresses,” party chairman James Carabelli told Michigan Messenger in a telephone interview earlier this week.
Vile. Simply vile.

First, they deregulate their shriveled little hearts out, contributing to this entire mortgage mess, and then they attempt to disenfranchise the people most screwed by the economy they created.

Enough!

Holy bloody hell. Worst. Americans. Ever. (except maybe the Klan, which isn't mutually exclusive of the modern Republican party) The founders decided not to make property ownership a requirement to vote. Now the bastards want to reverse that decision. I try to refrain from nasty language, but I have my limits.

Wait, so if you move after the registration deadline are you not allowed to vote!!!???? Because I am moving Nov. 1 but I don't know where I am moving too. Now I'm not being foreclosed and I don't live in Michigan, so I am assuming nobody will know that I moved and they will let me vote near my Oct 31 home. (this post was not meant to be self centered, I'm just trying to prove a point).

You can fill out a change of address form any time prior to (and probably even on) election day. The details can vary from precinct to precinct, I believe. However, who's going to know that?

This is one of those tactics that might not work in their favor, however. I'm not sure that the majority of foreclosed people are Democrats. (Of course, after being foreclosed their position on certain issues might change.) The very poor and/or those living in urban settings often don't have houses to be foreclosed on, after all.

It occurs to me after writing this that they can (and no doubt will) be selective about making sure that "people aren’t voting from those addresses". I.e., if you're in a heavily Republican precinct, they might forget to check if your house was foreclosed.

Project Vote has a diary on this subject as well, along with some resources on voter caging, which is what this is.

can you post that again? Six is my lucky number.

Every post will generate a "Server Error 500" on this site--they're using DeBolt "Safe Post" software. Check back to the diary and check comments before you post again-- usually one error means you are good to go.

Are you sure YOU can vote? To confirm your voter eligibility, click here and step through entering your name, email address, and then click Not Sure when the page comes up asking about your registration status. You do not have to be an Obama supporter to confirm your registration.

This is so important it deserves its own blog entry.

Vote? You don't need no stinking vote!
There has been a policy in the US to deny the voting right to blacks since they got the vote. Much like slavery was continued by chain gangs, the laws were changed to deny felons the right to vote. Blacks were rounded up and jailed for minor offenses, sent off to build roads and public work projects. They couldn't vote in prison. And if they got out they were denied the right to vote. So much for forgiving someone who has paid their "debt to society." Racist legislatures wrote laws that discriminated against blacks. They still do.
In the 2000 election, Florida expanded the policy by denying voting rights to citizens from democratic leaning districts who were "suspected" of being ineligible to vote; based on computer generated data mining reports. Black soldiers in Iraq and Afghanistan were denied their right to vote by the illegal caging scam. (Which Bush and the JustUs Department made legal) And now Michigan is at it. So is my state, sad to say. With a Democrat governor in charge, in a Democratic primary no less, Native American and Hispanic voters in this year's primary election were forced to vote with provisional ballots at a much higher rate than Anglos, and voting machines were limited to force long waits in their districts. It took weeks for the totals to be posted.
The obvious conclusion is that many people who speak to the fundamental democratic principle of one vote per person are lying by their actions. Along with the traditional exclusion of Blacks, and the more recent discrimination against Native Americans and Hispanics, they still don't want working people to vote, so they schedule elections on Tuesdays during working hours, instead of Saturdays. The list goes on: provisional ballots, voter ID, too few voting machines in certain districts, hackable paperless voting machines... Result: lowest voter turnout in the world.
People who think they are going to vote in the upcoming election would do well to verify that they are still eligible.

Instead of working out ways to prevent people from voting, perhaps these fascists could try to remember which country they live in and come up with ways to get MORE people out to the polls. Fucking subhuman cretins.

Hey they are getting back to the values America started with - only landowners could vote (circa 1770's)
