I understand that this sounds terrifying. However my sense is that this is maybe a half-true situation or partially true which isn't lovely. But I do think it is a good idea for everyone to write senators and congressmen and let them know what their 'actual' concerns are regarding this bailout.
For me number one concern is that no congressional powers are given away. Authority must be given in a way that does not permanently increase the authority of the president. We are in this situation precisely because of a president with poor judgement among other things and I understand something must be done... but there must 'remain' a check and balance and the power of the purse must remain in the hands of congress. I am conerned that no 'dirty tricks' are played in this situation. Congress must be clever and careful in measuring what they do and how they do it. There must be no blind support. Everything should be read, reviewed, reread and clarified to assure the people of american that their democracy still has a chance.
I'm thinking that if we have to swallow this bitter pill, we need to have the Treasury run by someone other than a member of the Bush administration, preferrably a bipartison commission.
